Best book and/or series that you’ve read in 2016

Series:

the-illuminae-files-series

Book(s):

every-heart-a-doorway-by-seanan-mcguire night-film-by-marisha-pessl homegoing-by-yaa-gyasi

I went into a lot more detail in my Faves and Not So Faves of 2016 and End of Year Survey posts.

Authors that you’ve recently found and would like to read more of in the new year:

V.E Schwab, Leigh Bardugo & Maggie Stiefvater.

Most anticipated book turned movie/tv show?

Yeah, I have no idea about anything when it comes to adaptations. I guess the A Series of Unfortunate Events Netflix series!! That looks like it’s gonna be wonderful.

I’m excited for Star Wars: Episode VIII if that counts?

Name a character that you wouldn’t mind sharing a kiss with at midnight (if there is one):

Nikolas Malikov (Gemina) if he was 10 years older.

I’m so old, Jesus Christ.

What’s on your TBR for 2017? (Top 5 will suffice if it’s an extremely long list!)

I don’t really do TBRs. I just read whatever I’m feeling, I’m mostly just wanting to catch up on a ton of backlist books and series.

The Wrath & the Dawn (The Wrath & the Dawn, #1) Red Queen (Red Queen, #1) The Special Ones Shadow and Bone (The Grisha, #1) Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows, #2) Am I Normal Yet? (The Spinster Club, #1) The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1) Wolf By Wolf (Wolf By Wolf, #1) What We Saw We Have Always Lived in the Castle My Sister Rosa The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #1) The Young Elites (The Young Elites, #1) Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) Blood Promise (Vampire Academy, #4) Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles, #2) The Song of Achilles I'll Give You the Sun Library of Souls (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, #3) Vicious (Vicious, #1) This Savage Song (Monsters of Verity, #1) The Scorpio Races Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #2)

The two main books I wanted to read this year were Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda and Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe which I’ve already read so I’m giving myself a high-five.

How many books do you hope to read in 2017?

capture

I plan on upping my goal throughout the year if I’m on track. I read 127 books last year, but half of those were graphic novels and trade paperbacks. I read about 50 full length novels and at the start of the year I’d set my goal for 20 books so this seems reasonable enough. I’m not really stressed honestly.

Will you participate in the Goodreads Reading Challenge or any others (PopSugar, Read the Books You Buy, etc.)

Besides Goodreads I’ll be participating in Diversity Bingo 2017! My TBR will be hopefully going up soon. I’m also attempting participate in Read Diverse 2017 which is all about reviewing the diverse books you read.

Any New Year’s Resolutions? (Bookish, blogging, and otherwise)

I don’t really do resolutions. I can’t put too much pressure on myself or it sets back all the progress I’ve made really bad. I prefer using the term “goals” because it’s something that sounds less serious.

I made a post about my Reading & Blogging goals that you can find here!

As for personal goals the main ones I have are:

  • Continuing to work on managing my mental illnesses
  • Become vegetarian
  • Learn Spanish

Every year I say “I’m going to stop letting my MI control me” and it just never happens and it sets me back. This year I am just going to focus on taking really tiny steps. If I can leave the house or get through the day without having an attack I’m calling it a win. I hate that I’ve wasted most of my life, but my mental health comes first and at the moment I have to just concentrate on the fact that still being here is enough.

With the vegetarian one I’m not going to be strict with it. I don’t have much money. I can’t afford to eat most days unless I eat what the rest of my family is having. I’m going to try my hardest though!

When I was at primary school and the first couple of years of high school I was pretty fluent in Indonesian. However, now I can barely remember anything except how to count and some basic phrases. I really want to try and start using Duolingo and other resources online to try and learn Spanish. I’ve been trying for a while now and keep getting distracted. I also find it IMPOSSIBLE to roll my “Rs” like i have tried EVERYTHING. I just can’t do it, so I totally butcher the pronunciation but I’m trying??? So! Hopefully that counts for something.

Not tagging anyone because it’s getting past the “Ringing in the New Year” stages, but if you’d like to do it feel free ♥

  1. Gonna check Kirsty’s blog now, thanks 😊
Everybody is loving Illuminae, I guess I should give it a try (it was in my TBR already, but it might have jumped a few steps).
So glad you liked Maggie’s books!! I still have to read anything by V.E.Schwab… Also, I never read the Series of Unfortunate Events series, but I’m getting the urge to read them recently.
Congrats on reading the two books you wanted to read this year already! 🎉 I hope you liked them both. I’ve only read Simon from those. And from your list, I either want to read or have read most of them so looking forward to your reviews! And I get what you say about not wanting to have a TBR list. I have one, but it’s flexible.
Good luck on your challenges! I’m sorry to hear about your MI; they’re horrible BUT it’s already a huge step to put yourself first and deal with it, so keep the good work! I know we don’t know each other, but if you ever need anything, just say so, really ❤️ And I’m sure a lot of people will also want to support you.
Oh, and if you need help with Spanish, I can help you.I love languages and I’ve tried learning German and Italian on my own before and it’s something I have to work with because I’m so lazy I never last long 😦
(Sorry if this was messy, I was commenting in order haha)

    1. Ahh, yes, read Illuminae!!! It’s amazing 😀

I’ve only read the first book in ASoUE, but it’ was really fun! Apparently the first season of the show focuses on the first 4 books so I’m gonna try and binge read those before it starts.

Right!!! I’m such a mood reader that I can’t confine myself too a list. I guarantee there’ll still be books on that list left unread by the end of the year 😂

Thank youuuu ♥ and I’ll definitely keep that in mind! Haha, I have the lazy problem too. That and a terrible memory 😂

Noo, not at all! I love receiving your comments ♥

      1. It’s on my TBR now, but that doesn’t guarantee I read it this year haha

Oh, I didn’t know that. Maybe I’ll binge read them too 😀

I get you. I love making lists but Im also a mood reader, so it’s difficult to combine both. I had a list of books I wanted to read but knowing myself, it will be impressive if I read even half of them 😂 And I also have to consider possible slumps, so I have to alternate different kind of books to prevent that.

I have a terrible memory too! At first I wanted to make notes and write everything down, but then it became sooooo boring. I should find an easy TV show to watch or something.

Awwww, thanks ♥ It’s nice that you always reply!

        1. Yes, exactly! That’s why I tend to read lots of comics and graphic novels in between, haha. I have a really bad attention span too so I find it hard to focus unless I change everything I up.

I tried notes too! It didn’t work out 😂 Have you seen Parks and Rec? It’s such a fun show!!

Aw, thank you! I feel like I’m really bad at replying to comments haha, but I try my best 😀

          1. I get that. I’m never too good with comics. I’ll catch up with the series I follow but then a month or two will pass by and I won’t read anything, because I was catching up and needed a break, but that means I am not caught up anymore. So difficult!
Last time I tried it without notes and it worked better, but I felt like I missed some things. I need to have it written down too.
I love love love Parks and Rec ❤️❤️ One of my favourites. I meant for the languages I’m learning though, that’s what I did with English, I watched TV shows and movies, and then turned to books haha

  3. SO many fabulous books on this list. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, I am SO excited for you to read Crooked Kingdom. I’m hoping to do some backlist reading this year too. I think I may sign up for Diversity Bingo, I’ve had my eye on it for a little while. I hope you manage to achieve your goals this year lovely 🙂

    1. I’m so excited, but incredibly terrified 😂 to read CK!! I think I’m going to once I finish up with my current readathon!! I’m DYING to know what happens even though I’m totally not ready. And yes at signing up for the Diversity Bingo!! I’ve discovered so many great books whilst trying to find them for the categories. The creators have all said that it’s low pressure too and totally okay if you can’t read all the books!! Thank you so much, Kelly ♥

  4. So, SO much love for you, Lauren!! ❤ I'm so glad you're taking care of yourself, and you're right – you being here is MORE than enough, and we as the book blogging community are better because of it.
I'm actually pescatarian; I cut meat out of my diet about a year and a half ago, and I'm hoping to become fully vegetarian once I go off to uni – as a member of a Korean household, it's extremely hard to not eat both meat and seafood, so I had to choose between the two 😅. I'm excited for us to both try and transition to vegetarianism this year!
You have some REALLY good books on your TBR – The Song of Achilles is one of my favorite books in the world (even though it almost killed me), and Wolf by Wolf was one of my favorite reads of 2016. I actually also read Crooked Kingdom two days ago, and I have SO much to say about it, so I'm excited for you to read it!!
Great post, per usual, Lauren ❤

    1. Thank you so much, Katherine ♥

I feel like I’m pretty much pescoterian because the only meat I really eat is chicken. Haha, that’s definitely understandable! Like everyone in my house is pretty much all for meat, so it’s hard to kind of work around that. We have a lot of seafood too because my dad is so into it, but I hate it 😂 Yes!! I’d love to be vegan one day, but baby steps 😀

I’m so excited to read them all 😀 And terrified for Crooked Kingdom hahaha.

  5. Great tag Lauren, and I loved reading your answers for this one. Seems like the perfect way to both celebrate 2016 and look forwards to 2017 as well. 😀
The Illuminae Files is a brilliant series, one of my favourites as well, and oh I loved Every Heart a Doorway too, such a brilliant book. You have some amazing ones on your to-read list for 2017. A lot of these are favourites of mine so I can’t wait to see what you think of them. What one are you going to start on? Also good luck with your Goodreads reading challenge, the other reading challenges you’re taking part in and your non-bookish resolutions! 😀 ❤

  6. The same thing happened to me last year with the reason Challenge. Originally, my Challenge was 23 books but by the end of the year I read close to a 100 but half of them were graphic novels and re-reads. So this year I’m setting my goal to 50 like you.

As for personal goals I have similar ones too lol. Specifically, the one about MI but at the same time I feel like that’s just a constant goal for me. If I can get through a school day one day at a time it’s definitely a win! (And I feel like I’m repeating everything you said 😅)

As for the Spanish, I am fluent in it so if you ever want to practice feel free to send me a message. 😊

    1. Yay! Hopefully we can both reach it 😀 I’m still going to be reading a lot of comics and graphic novels this year, but hopefully I can read more novels!

Ahh, same. It’s been a constant thing for me too. I feel like I’ve put way too much pressure on myself in the past so I’m trying to relax a bit more this year. Sending lots of positive vibes your way ♥

Ooh, thanks! I’ll definitely keep that in mind!!

  7. Did you like Ari and Dante?? It’s such a beautiful book!! The Song of Achilles is also an amazing novel. And I’m a veggie too! I found it surprisingly easy to give up meat so I hope you find it easy and rewarding too 😛

    1. I did!! It was such a beautiful book. It did feel a little slow paced sometimes, but that was on me and my non existent attention span. It didn’t affect my overall enjoyment though because the writing and characters were amazing. Ahh, that’s good to hear! I basically only eat chicken now so hopefully it won’t be too hard to work around haha.
