Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We’d love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!
This Week’s Theme: Ten Books I’ve Added To My To-Be-Read List
I decided not to include upcoming releases in here because that is being saved for an upcoming post 😎🙊
Covers = Goodreads
Here Comes the Sun by Nicole Dennis-Benn – Set in Jamica and follows two sisters. One of the sisters was involved in the sex trade (so she could survive) and the other sister is in love with a woman. Super excited to read this because I’ve heard great things.
Fight Like A Girl by Clementine Ford – This is a non-fiction collection on different essays on texts on feminism. Clementine is Australian so it’ll be interesting to see a local perspective.
Under Rose Tainted Skies by Louise Gornoll – I found out about this book by a tweet from The Bookavid. I looked it up on Goodreads and saw that the main character suffers from agoraphobia. Since I relate to that on a person level I decided I need to read it. I’m always nervous about reading books with agoraphobia because I’m worried it’ll be misrepresented or cured by a love interest, but this one seems to have mostly positive reviews.
Deceit and Other Possibilities by Vanessa Hua – I found this one from a tweet by Naz @ Read Diverse Books. I swear someone else mentioned it recently too, but I can’t remember. It’s a short story collection about immigrant families in America.
Arabella of Mars by David D. Levine – This takes place on Mars (!!!) and is about a girl who is sent back to London to become a “proper lady”. She needs to return home to Mars because of a circumstances with her family. To do this she has to pretend to be a boy on a Mars Trading Company ship so she can get back home to help her brother and their family plantation.
Signal to Noise by Silvia Moreno-Garcia – A magical realism set in Mexico city where a girl can use songs to cast spells?!!?!? SIGN ME THE HECK UP. I can’t believe I haven’t read this yet.
All American Boys by Jason Reynolds & Brendan Kiely – I heard Joce @ squibblesreads speak about this book and I added it to my TBR straight away. It’s about two boys, Rashad (who is black) and Quinn (who is white). Rashad experiences police brutality and Quinn witnesses it. It follows them as they try to figure out how to handle what happened. Considering this is such a relevant and current issue this book sounds really important. Joce rated it 5 stars too and I trust her opinion immensely.
A Darkly Beating Heart by Lindsay Smith – This is time a travel story that takes place in modern and 19th century Japan. The MC sounds very self-destructive too which is something I find interesting. There’s also LGBT+ themes according to Goodreads so I’m curious to see what’s that about.
Ring by Kōji Suzuki – I had NO idea that The Ring movies were based on a book? The movie was one of the first horror movies I ever watched and it still terrifies me. I’m so interested to read this. I really hope it creeps me out.
The Beauty by Aliya Whitely – I found this from Esther @ Chapter Adventures October wrap up post and it sounded so incredibly strange and unique I knew I had to read it. I’m not even sure how to summarise it, but it seems like a Horror/Sci-Fi/Magical Realism mash up were there’s no longer women in the world and the men are just kinda waiting to die. It deals with gender roles within society.
Great selections!!! Signal to Noise has been on my radar for a while, and the last one you included looks great. I love the mushroom cover art too 💞

A Darkly Beating Heart has such a pretty cover! To be completely honest, that’s why I added it to my tbr in the first place, lol, but then I read the description and was glad I had added it. It sounds really interesting!
Great list! 🙂

So many of these sound so good! I have an eARC of Under Rose-Tainted Skies that I got from NetGalley and I’m hoping to get to it in the beginning of December (it doesn’t release until January in the US). Hopefully I like it as much as others seem to 🙂

Ooh that’s so cool. I’ll definitely be interested to see what you think!!

These all seem like great additions to your to-read list Lauren. I haven’t got any of them on mine but I’ve been seeing a lot of Under Rose-Tainted Skies recently so I’m definitely going to check that one out. The only book I’ve read featuring a character with agoraphobia is Highly Illogical Behaviour and that was just such an amazing story, really well written too, have you heard of that one?
Great picks for this week! 🙂

I don’t know why, but the cover for A Darkly beating heart is really intriguing me. Plus time travel and Japan and a ‘hateful’ main character = YES!

Great picks Lauren! All American Boys & Here Comes the Sun have been on my TBR for too long and you just reminded me to get a move on lol. I’ve been waiting for the price to drop on Arabella Of Mars…not so patiently waiting…beginning to think that this book is just going to be pricey. Didn’t know about Silivia Moreno Garcia’s Signal To Noise, I have this authors newest book Certain Dark Things which I believe is about Mexican Vampires 🙂

Adding All the American Boys to my Goodreads TBR right now!! I haven’t seen any YA books featuring police brutality and that’s so current right now! Awesome 🙂

Same! I’d love to say that it’s because there’s so many books and so little time but a lot of the time it’s my own procrastination. 😂

Awesome list this week, Lauren! I’m SUPER interested in A Darkly Beating Heart–I really should add it to my goodreads folder, if I haven’t already, as it sounds RIGHT up my alley!
Happy book-ing to you in the near future! Hopefully you enjoy all your recent bookish acquisitions (by which I mean, the books in your leaning tower of read-za!) Here’s my Top Ten Tuesday, if you’re interested; no worries if you’re not though! Happy Tuesday. ❤

Once again I haven’t come across any of these books yet! I swear everytime I come onto your blog, I end up with a ton of recommendations to check out myself XD
My TBR is so large, I still have to read Throne of Glass, Six of Crows etc, but I recently added Uglies by Scott Westerfield and I’m actually about to pick that one up in the hopes I like it ALOT and find it very useful for my dissertation which I’m doing on dystopian female heroines… (which you know about haha!)

Hahaha. I’m always happy to help add to people’s TBRs 😂
Oh my god, I still have to read all of those too. And your dissertation seriously sounds so interesting.

Yesss I put Fight Like a Girl on my library list and I can’t wait to get it! I love the sound of Under Rose-Tainted Skies, the only other book I’ve read with agoraphobia was Sweet Damage by Rebecca James (which was awesome btw). Signal to the Noise sounds awesome as well! I love how there are so many great diverse reads here. You’ve just helped my tBR a lot, great recommendations Lauren!

Aw, thanks so much Jean! I’m definitely trying to make my reading more diverse. One of my main goals for 2017 is to read more diverse books. I loved Sweet Damage!! Rebecca is one of my favourite authors. I’d love for her to write another book.

I have the same misgivings on books about agoraphobia, I get so mad when they use the “love cures everything” trope. Please, does that mean my hubby doesn’t love me enough or that I don’t love him enough if I haven’t beaten my agoraphobia yet? –‘ So stupid. Thanks for bringing the book to my attention, I’m buying it right now!
I’m also stealing Deceit and other Possibilities!
The Ring is so scary. I watched the US and Japanese movie versions and got scared witless! I’m sure the book will be the same, the Japanese style is perfect for scary things.

Riiiiight. It’s honestly so annoying and totally demeaning to people who suffer from those illnesses. I hope this one has good representation! I’ve also heard great things about Highly Illogical Behavior if you hadn’t heard of that already.
Haha! They scared me so much too, but I love it. I’m really interested in how the books will compare.

Highly Illogical Behavior is on my shelf 🙂 I heard it’s brilliant and does not take the wrong road to talk about agoraphobia. Let’s read both and discuss them!

Yes!! Hopefully I can get to them soon.
