I Need To Be Banned From Goodreads // The Goodreads Book Tag

The Goodreads Book Tag

I don’t want to alarm anyone, but I haven’t posted a Book Tag in almost two weeks. I know. What the hell. I, Queen of the Book Tags™, have not posted a SINGLE book tag in TWO WEEKS.

You no longer need to worry though because I am here to right past wrongs. Kind of. Instead of doing one of the millions of tags I’ve been actually tagged to do I decided to do one that nobody tagged me in. I saw this tag on Sophie @ SophiesSeries channel and since I spend an unhealthy amount of time on Goodreads I decided I wanted to do it!

The Goodreads Tag was created by Kayla @ Spiral Bookmark but the original video seems to be have been deleted.

Covers = Goodreads

I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain ReidWhat was the last book you marked as ‘read’?

I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid and boy was it one bizarre reading experience. I kind of guessed what was happening, but it was really unsettling at times. It actually made me quite anxious. I don’t even know how to talk about it because I can’t really say anything without spoiling the entire thing. It was nothing like I was expecting it to be.

Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini TaylorWhat are you currently reading?

I have 100 pages left of Daughter of Smoke and Bone! I’m really enjoying it. I can’t express in words how much I love Karou and Zuzana’s friendship. They’re brilliant individually too. The pacing is slower than what I’m used to, but Laini Taylor’s writing style is so gorgeous that it’s definitely helped me stay focused. I’m really excited to see what happens and to continue on with the series!

Bodies of Water by V. H. LeslieWhat was the last book you marked as ‘TBR’?

Bodies of Water by V. H. Leslie. I honestly had no idea this book even existed (and it only has 12 ratings on Goodreads) until I saw Mercedes @ MercysBookishMusings talk about it in her newest video. It’s about an Asylum in Victorian London that used water torture as a method of treatment. Years later a women movies into the house and weird shit starts happening. I’m not even sure to be honest. It just sounded so interesting from what Mercedes was saying and it’s only 144 pages so I was immediately sold.

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. SchwabVassa in the Night by Sarah PorterWhat book do you plan to read next?

A Darker Shade of Magic!!!! I’m beyond excited to start reading this. It sounds amazing and I’ve heard so many wonderful things. As soon as I finish with A Daughter of Smoke and Bone I’m going to start this. Since I like reading multiple books at once I’ll also probably start Vassa in the Night because it’s an ARC and I have got to catch up on my ARCs, haha.

Do you use the star rating system?

Yep! Do people actually use Goodreads without rating? I struggle with rating books though. I’m extremely indecisive and get conflicted. I think I might be too generous sometimes, but oh well! My average rating is 3.87 which kind of surprised me because I give out a lot of 4 and 5 stars, haha.

Goodreads ChallengeAre you doing a Reading Challenge?

Yesss. I’m 18 books ahead of schedule thanks to graphic novels and trade paperbacks, haha. I don’t count single comic issues towards my goal, but I think it’s fair to include full graphic novels and trades. I’m pretty proud of this considering last year I read like maybe 6 books (and a million single issue comics).

Do you have a wishlist?

Not really? I’m kind of a ‘mood buyer’ as well as a mood reader. I just scroll through my TBR and whatever I’m feeling at the time is what I’ll buy. I do really want to get physical copies of The Raven Cycle series though, so maybe that? I don’t have a ‘wish-list’ shelf or list or anything.

What book do you plan to buy next?

I’m actually currently in the city tomorrow for a quick overnight trip (I’m six hours away from the city btw, haha, I promise I don’t casually make overnight trips to somewhere that’s only an hour or less away 😂) and I plan to try and hit up as many book stores as I possibly can. We are short on time though – we’re just going to pick my sister up from uni – and my family isn’t that interested in books so. If I can’t get to any actual book stores though I’m hoping K-Mart and Big W have a decent selection . To answer the question though – I have no idea. I’ll see what catches my eye!

Do you have any favorite quotes, would you like to share a few?

  • “Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win.” – Stephen King
  • “So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be.” – Stephen Chbosky
  • “I am gone quite mad with the knowledge of the overwhelming number of things I can never know, places I can never go, people I can never be.” – Sylvia Plath
  • “The bravest thing I ever did was continuing my life when I wanted to die.” – Juliette Lewis
  • “Where words fail, music speaks.” – Hans Christian Anderson
  • “After all, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure” – J.K. Rowling

And like so many more, but I’ll save those for future 3 Days, 3 Quotes tags.

Who are your favorite authors?

  • R.L. Stine
  • Rick Riordan
  • J.K Rowling
  • Maggie Stiefvater
  • Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
  • Alexandra Bracken
  • Rebecca James
  • Kendare Blake

Have you joined any groups?

I have, but I’m not very active in them! I’m a member of a bunch of YA Groups and Book Blogger Groups. The only ones I’ve been active on are:

Also just want to shoutout The Feminist Orchestra Book Club because it’s wonderful and I will participate one day.

What do you think that Goodreads could do better?

HALF STAR RATINGS.

PLEASE.

I NEED HALF STAR RATINGS.

PLEASE.

Tagging:

I’m being lazy and am tagging anyone who wants to do it!

Feel free to add me on Goodreads! I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of the books I mentioned or just on Goodreads in general. Do you spend way too much time on it like I do? Or is it not something that you really use?

Hope you’re all having a fantastic day xx

P.S. I’m away and this is a scheduled post. I’ll try to reply to everything once I’m back!

  1. I will probably do this one too. Much like you, I desperately need to be banned from Goodreads. However it’s also been a great tool for helping me discover new authors and upcoming titles.

  3. I saw Bodies of Water on Mercy’s channel but it sounds way too scary for me. 😂
I LOVE rating books on Goodreads! I honestly never get conflicted, I somehow always know what I wanna rate a book. 😛
Ohh it’s so cool that you wanna read 100 books! Even if they’re graphic novels. I’m aiming for 75 and am a bit behind schedule. 😀
Half-star ratings would definitely be pretty cool!

  4. Half star ratings! We need those now!
Also, I’m really excited to read your review of A Darker Shade of Magic 🙂

  5. I still haven’t read Daughter of Smoke and Bone yet, despite people recommend it to me IRL. BUT I have FINALLY started The Book Thief last night!

Also yes, yes, yes, for A Darker Shade of Magic. I hope you love it. ❤

  6. I love seeing Daughter of Smoke & Bone being talked about still, even though it’s been out for a few years! That’s one of my favorite books.

And I’m looking forward to seeing how you feel about Vassa in the Night. It sounds very unusual, in that way where it will probably either be fantastic or it won’t work at all.

    Great post! 🙂

  7. Goodreads seriously needs to introduce half star ratings, it’d make life soooo much easier!
I always forget how big WA is and then you mention living six hours away from the city and it’s like “oh right”.

  8. I might do this tag too, but I know it’s only a slippery slope until I do every tag I can…AND GOODREADS REALLY NEEDS HALF STARS. Though it would probably really mess up their statistics for a while

  9. I didn’t use ratings on the blog for a very long time because I’m afraid some people just glance at the rating and don’t really take into account the nuances of the review. (And, based on some comments, I think my suspicions are confirmed. Sometimes people are like “Oh, wow, glad you loved this! Going to buy it now!” when really the review was kind of on the fence. There might be four stars, but that’s because I rounded up a kind of “eh, I guess it’s good” 3.5 stars up or something.) Anyway, though, I always used star ratings on Goodreads despite these misgivings, so I second your question of whether there are many people who don’t.

I’m kind of torn on the half stars. Honestly, I could use a 3.5 stars, but otherwise I’m pretty good with whole stars. :p

  10. Congratulations on your GR goal and the stats over last year!! Using GR has actually helped me read so much more over time 🙂 And totally feel you on the mood-buying/reading, that’s pretty much my only criteria when picking out what to read next!

  12. Omg did you end up buying anything during your trip to the city? 😀 I love those quotes you mentioned! I have too many fave book quotes to list xD YESSS WHY DOESN’T GOODREADS HAVE HALF STAR RATINGS YET?!

  13. Glad to hear that you’re enjoying Daughter of Smoke and Bone! I’ve been wanting to pick that one up for a while because I’ve heard nothing but good things but I really do not like the UK cover and want to get the hardcovers. I just can’t afford to buy the whole series right now T_T

  14. I suck at ratings and I’m always too harsh, my average is 3.11. I’m trying to change that, though, because I don’t think I’m always being fair. I hope you find some cool books on your trip 😉

  15. Ahhhh I bloody love this tag! Answers on point, as always. 😀 That Stephen King quote is one of my absolute, all time faves and I totally agree when it comes to the half star thing. Like, they do so much awesome stuff on the site and it’s so tailored to blogging but they don’t do half star ratings?! Why?!

PS. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR GR CHALLENGE WIDGET TO LOOK LIKE THAT?! Mine looks HORRIBLE when I try to put it into posts so I always give up. Show me the way, Lauren! x
