The Month If We Were Villains Destroyed My Life // November Wrap Up

wrapup

The end of the year is fast approaching and I’ve accomplished nothing with my life cool cool cool. Anyway, the most important question is: did I stick to my TBR? Kind of. I disappeared about halfway through the month and I go into more detail into my “me me me” section of this post. Things will probably be hectic this month too because Christmas πŸ™ƒπŸ€’ but we’ll see how I go!

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha NganΒ from Hachette Australia

I never requested this so seeing an ARC show up was such a lovely surprise! It’s so pretty 😍😍😍

the-books-i-read

When this month first started I was pretty happy with how my reading was going. I was sticking to my TBR relatively well, but then I picked upΒ If We Were VillainsΒ and there went the end of that because that book DESTROYED me and even now, 2 weeks later, I’m struggling to even WANT to read anything else.

Girl Made of Stars To Kill a Kingdom What If It's Us

Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake ||Β β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… ||Β This was such a difficult, but important read. I think I cried the entire time? I can’t recommend it enough. The characters and the relationships between everyone were all done so brilliantly and the topic of rape was handled really well. [tw: rape, sexual assault, paedophilia]

To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo ||Β β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜† ||Β If you’re a casual fantasy reader like I am then I think you’ll REALLY enjoy this. It was so much fun and I loved the whole enemies to lovers trope going on between the mc and her love interest.

What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli & Adam SilveraΒ ||Β β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… ||Β Now that I’ve read this I can definitely see why people had issues, but I couldn’t help but love it??? I’m just so weak for the whole awkward, pop culture filled contemporary. I actually almost died reading that Ansel Elgort scene though GOOD GOD. I feel like a lot of people hate the ending and again I see why, but idk — call me a pessimistic but I liked it. [tw: panic attacks, homophobia]

Dear Martin If We Were Villains

Dear Martin by Nic Stone ||Β β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜† ||Β Another difficult, but extremely important read that made me SOB. As a white person I feel like I can’t really comment too much on this because it’s not my place. I’m really glad this story exists though and everyone needs to read it. Nic Stone hit hard and I’m so glad she did. [tw: racism, gun violence, police brutality]

If We Were Villains by M.L. RioΒ ||Β β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… ||Β THIS BOOK HAS RUINED ME FOR ALL OF ETERNITY. GOD DAMN THESE RIDICULOUS THEATRE KIDS AND THEIR LACK OF ABILITY TO JUST FUCKING TALK TO EACH OTHER. I’LL PROBABLY NEVER BE ABLE TO READ ANOTHER BOOK AGAIN? I’M LEGIT TEARING UP JUST WRITING THIS BECAUSE THE ENDING FUCKED ME UP THAT MUCH. EVERYTHING HURTS. IF YOU’VE READ THIS PLEASE TALK TO ME BECAUSE I’M NOT OKAY. After I finished reading this book I kept rereading all my favourite parts andΒ I made a playlist on Spotify with a 113 songs and that’s how I know a book has affected me lmao [tw: violence]

me-me-me

Wow. It’s been a Month.

I should have known that when I finally cracked my phone’s screen that this month was going to be not great lmao.

First of all I was hit with a really bad flu and was in bed for like 5 days.

Then the reason why I haven’t been around is because some Family Dramaβ„’ happened. I was looking after my little sister (who has a lot of mood issues) for a week. I literally had no time to do anything except go to class. I then spent a weekend back home before finally coming back to Perth. In Geraldton all I did was take photos of the beach and play with my dad’s new puppy.

Mental health wise I’ve started seeing a psychologist. It happened pretty spur of the moment. She’s really nice, but because she’s assigned by my job network she’s very work orientated so I think I want to try and find someone else as well? Just because I feel like that’s a huge focus of the sessions and I want it to be more than that? It’s been a pretty draining experience, because I’ve always struggled with that side of the treatment process.

In more positive news I finished my TAFE course!! I’m just waiting back for the final results but I’m 98% sure I passed πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ I’ve already started the re-enrolment process for getting my cert iv next year! I know it’s going to be a lot harder, but I’m excited because it’s going to be more focused on actual web design. Our major assessment was to create a simple website for a fake bike store. I can’t show you a working version, but here’s a screen shot of my index page.

When I’m stressed I tend to watch more movies or tv shows? I know a lot of people use reading as a way to de-stress and whilst reading definitely helps me I just find it impossible to read when stressful situations are going on? So this month, technically the past few days, I decided I wanted to watch all the trashy teen horror/thriller movies because they’re my Fave. I’m so not usually a movie watcher? I honestly either watch 3 movies a year or 3 movies a day. There’s no in between.

ObviouslyΒ AquamarineΒ andΒ Small FootΒ weren’t part of my horror binge lmaoooo, but I watchedΒ AquamarineΒ because I was on a mermaid kick after readingΒ To Kill A KingdomΒ and I’d never seen it before and I was feeling kinda sad so I thought it would help cheer me up and I fell in love with it. It’s such a cute movie with a great message of friendship. When I was in Geraldton I took my sister to see Small FootΒ and it was your typical fun animated film.

I won’t go too much into all the horror movies. They all have the same overall themes (the two Truth or Dare movies have the legit same plot lmao). I did take a break from the Trashy Horrors to watch a Serious Horror and finally saw HereditaryΒ and oh my fucking god what the fUCK??????? To cleanse myself I then continued with the trashy horrors.Β My favourites were definitelyΒ Unfriended: Dark Web (I was one of the people who enjoyed the first one, but if you didn’t don’t be put off — this is in a whole new league), Like.Share.Follow (this has Keiynan Lonsdale so!! He plays a famous YouTuber who’s stalked by a fan),Β SyFy’s Truth or DareΒ (college kids play a game of truth or dare that’s possessed by a demon), Look AwayΒ (super fucked up thriller about a girl replacing herself with a mirror imaged version and fucking shit up),Β KristyΒ (legit no plot just a girl alone on a campus being hunted by 4 killers but she’s a total badass), Plush (this was a rewatch and is one of my fave movies ever it’s so trashy and fucked up a pretty reckless-esque rock singer hooks up with her guitarist and shit goes wrong real fast) and #PopFan (a Lifetime Kidzbopped version of Misery). The only one I really hated wasΒ Wish Upon lmao.Β If you want to know more about each movie then I’ve made a thread on Twitter!

Some of my favourite songs from this month:

CAN WE TALK ABOUT WHAT A CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE THIS MUSIC VIDEO IS

I’ve been in love with Ashley Tisdale since I was 16 and I’m so happy she’s making music again.

This new song from Marianas Trench got me back into their music and reminded me why they were one of my favourite bands.

This song is about my life lmao but seriously I love this band so much their music is beautiful omg

Like always, here’s a playlist of all my favourite songs from the month:

  1. I hope you’re able to get a therapist you’re happy with ❀ Ooooh good luck on your course I bet you did amazing!! Omg I LOVE Aquamarine. That and H2O are THE mermaid movie/shows to watch lol. I don't even care if they were made for 10 year olds I'll still watch them. Hereditary… omg. I was cooking with my grandma one day while my dad and sister (who are big horror fans) watched it in the living room so I saw bits and pieces of it… that's one messed up movie lol. I keep forgetting that Ashley Tisdale came back with a new song. I need to check it out!

  2. Congratulations on finishing your course Lauren!! πŸ™‚ Ahhh your dad’s puppy is so cute, what’s his/her name? I totally agree with you about the ending of What If It’s Us, I think it worked really well. I loved that book. I reeeeeally need to read If We Were Villains, I’ve got it on my Kindle and it sounds amazing! I’ve also got the audiobook of To Kill a Kingdom, and as I am also a ‘casual’ fantasy reader I think I am going to enjoy it too πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks so much β™₯ My little sister decided to call him Buster!! Ahh yes, I’m so glad we had similar thoughts about What If It’s Us. To Kill A Kingdom really surprised me. You definitely need to read If We Were Villains, just be prepared to never be the same once you’ve finished πŸ˜‚

  3. Great recap, and it seems like overall you had a really positive month, which is great Lauren! πŸ™‚ ❀ I really love the video for Ariana Grande's Thank U, Next. Honestly watching it brought back so many memories of some of my favourite rom-coms like Legally Blonde (I love that film!) πŸ˜€
Also I'm so glad you enjoyed What If It's Us, I really enjoyed that book even the ending. I've seen a lot of mixed reviews about the ending but like you I enjoyed it as well, it felt realistic and true to the characters as well. It would have been off if it was anything else you know?
Again great recap, and I hope you have a brilliant December as well. πŸ™‚ ❀

    1. Thanks, Beth! The month was definitely a struggle at times, but I think it ended relatively well so that’s definitely a good thing 😊 Omg yes the video made me feel so nostalgic, the Bring It On references were my favourite because I was obsessed with that movie πŸ˜… Yes definitely agree about What If It’s Us! I really don’t see how anything else could have happened. It would have felt too forced? I hope your December is great too β™₯!

      1. That’s all right, and yes you came out the other end of this month in a good place so that’s the main thing right?! πŸ™‚
The whole video felt like a massive flashback to my childhood, and yeah I would have likely rated What If It’s Us lower if it’d had a forced ending.
        Thanks! πŸ™‚ ❀️

  5. First off, what a cute dog! πŸ˜€ I’m glad things are looking up, congrats on finishing your course, that must feel like weight off your shoulders! πŸ™‚ Your website looks awesome! Web design is a lot of fun; I had to take a few courses as it was part of my overall program and sometimes I think I went into the wrong field, like maybe I should have gone into web design… now I just feel too lazy to go back to school. I think people who go back are brave because I don’t think I could do it again!

    1. Riiight!! I didn’t want to leave him, haha. Thanks so much, Meghan 😊. It was definitely a tiring month at points, but it ended relatively well so that’s good!! It really is. It’s definitely challenging, but it’s something I’ve always loved and have been teaching myself to do since I was 13 so I finally decided to try and learn it properly πŸ˜‚ It’s been hard at times, but I think it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made!
