It’s been a hot minute since I’ve done a music related post on the blog and I miss talking about it so much! I’ve felt as though my music listening habits in 2018 have been a bit all over the place. I haven’t really listened to the same artists on a regular basis and instead I’ve spent a lot of time finding new bands. I decided to share some of the songs that I actually have wanted to listen to over and over again the past couple months. I’m saving my favourite albums for a future post 😎 I apologise in advanced for how vague or repetitive I am. There’s a reason why I’m just a fan of music and not a reviewer. I tried to narrow it down to 10 songs, but I’m too indecisive so you get this long ass post instead 💁🏻Enjoy!!
5 Seconds Of Summer – Ghost Of You
Admittedly, it took me a while to get into 5 Second Of Summer’s new album but one song I loved from the very first listen was Ghost Of You. It’s so raw and emotional. It hurts in the best way and every time I hear it I just want to hug Luke and ask him if he’s okay.
Against The Current – I Like The Way
It’s pretty rare that I love a happy, upbeat love song but I Like The Way is an exception. It’s just so cute it cracked the ice around my cold, dead heart. It definitely helps that this song is about Chrissy and her partner Cameron – they’re adorable! It’s also everything I’d want if I were to ever be in a relationship. So.
As It Is – The Wounded World
I wish I had have filmed my reaction listening to this song for the first time because I honestly Lost My Shit™. It felt like I’d travelled back to 2007 and was listening to a song I found on MySpace. This definitely isn’t outdated though. As It Is revived the sound and made it sound so fresh whilst singing about extremely important topics.
Bastille – Quarter Past Midnight
I was in love with Bastille’s debut album, but then their later releases didn’t interest me as much. I still really enjoyed their music, but I became a casual listener. However, this song has made me fall in love all over again. I don’t know if it’s just me but there’s certain songs I wish I could live in and Quarter Past Midnight is one of them.
Crooked Teeth – Honey
I only discovered Crooked Teeth a month or so ago but they’ve already become one of my new favouite bands. They have such a cool sound. I love the vibe of Honey so much. It’s so grungy and catchy and I can’t stop listening to it.
The Faim – I Can Feel You
As if I wasn’t going to include my Perth boys in this post (side note: I miss them). The Faim released their debut EP last month and it’s amazing. I chose this song because it’s one of my favourites to hear live. During the chorus the entire crowd jumps and it’s the best experience. It’s also the song that they were playing when I jumped on stage with them 😂. I love them. I love this song. Listen to it and support my home town’s music scene!
Hungover – Three’s Company
I only discovered this song not that long ago and I love the sound so much. I don’t even quit know how to explain it. The chorus makes me want to jump up and down. The song blends multiple genres seamlessly together. There’s pop elements and then things get grittier and then it bounces back to the pop. It’s honestly one of the most unique songs from the alternative/pop punk scene that I’ve heard in a while.
LANY – Thick And Thin
I listened to this song 26 times yesterday. I feel like I don’t need to say anything else. LANY are a band that everyone in the music community seemed to be buzzing about but no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t get in to them. Turns out all I needed to do was listen to Thick And Thin at 3am because now I love them. This song is seriously so addicting and I don’t know how to stop listening it. The vocalist’s voice is so nice, I wanna drown in it. It’s such a bop, but there’s an underlying sadness to it that hurts my heart. If you’re here for 80 synth pop inspired sounds then I’m pretty sure you’ll love it too.
Modern Maps – Nightfall
I discovered Modern Maps a few months ago when Nightfall showed up on my New Music playlist on Apple Music. I fell in love straight away. I hadn’t felt so strongly about a new band in so long and it was the best feeling. I love Modern Maps sound so much. It’s such a refreshing rock sound. They also follow me on Twitter and Instagram so y’know I’m a sucker for attention and acknowledgement.
Stand Atlantic – Lost My Cool
Stand Atlantic are an Australian band that were recently signed to Hopeless Records. They released their debut album a few days ago and I’m obsessed with it. Lost My Cool is one of my favourite songs from the album because it’s just so brutally honest and I relate to it so much. Stand Atlantic are bringing a sound back that I was severely missing from the pop punk world. With We Are The In Crowd disbanding and Paramore and Tonight Alive both leaving their “rock/pop punk” sound behind I’m so happy they exist.
Stuck Out – Linger (Stripped Back)
Stuck Out are another Australian band that deserve so much more recognition. They recently released a stripped back version of one of their songs Linger and it’s seriously beautiful. Every time I listen it makes me cry. I love when you can feel the emotion in a vocalists voice.
Timeflies – Little Bit
Okay, this song is the opposite to my music taste. I’m not even sure what it is that made me love it because I wouldn’t normally listen to something so pop, but it’s just such a fun song??? It’s so catchy. It reminds me something I would have wanted to dance to when I used to go out clubbing, haha. Timeflies also have some amazing covers that really showcase the range of their musical abilities.
Trophy Eyes – You Can Count On Me
Another Australian band! You Can Count On Me was the first song Trophy Eyes released from their newest album American Dream. It’s a brutally honest take on music and fan culture and how the two intertwine and brutally honest songs are my favourite kind of songs. I love the isolated vocals style chorus and this is a song I have to play on repeat every time I listen to it.
You Me At Six – Straight To My Head
When You Me At Six announced their sixth album I was excited, but apprehensive. I didn’t like their previous album Night People whatsoever. It was really disappointing and they lost everything I loved about them. Josh spoke about how the album wasn’t what the band wanted and how they were considering calling it a day. Well, I’m really glad they didn’t because whilst VI isn’t my favourite album they’ve released Straight To My Head is definitely one of my new favourite songs from them. This song embodies everything I love about You Me At Six. It’s such a perfect blend of their past albums Sinners Never Sleep and Cavalier Youth.
I would love to hear your thoughts on any of these songs if you’re familiar with them or the bands! If not, I hope I was able to introduce some awesome new music into your life.
Feel free to follow me on Spotify to keep up with what I’m listening to as well as see playlists that I make.
I hope you’re all having a fantastic day!
