Anticipated Releases for the Second Half of the Year

Most Anticipated Reads

I haven’t been as up to date with upcoming releases this year because of being away from blogging and reading, but I still managed to find a ridiculous amount!!!! Here’s some upcoming releases that I’m really excited to (eventually, one day) get to! I also wanna give a quick shout out to Laura @ The Book Corps because she made me aware of quiet a few of these – go check out her post because she has A TON of books on there. By the way, if I’ve left out a super popular book in a series it’s because I’m not up to date 🤷🏻‍♀️ All release dates are taken from Goodreads!

Found by Fleur Ferris || THRILLER || I love all of Fleur’s books so much and I’m hoping this will be no exception. It’s about a girl whose dad disappears and she discovers that he’s not who she thought he was and now her life is also in danger. I’m actually attending a Penguin Teen Showcase at the end of June and Fleur Ferris is going to be there so I’m excited to get my hands on this a few days early!!

The Unfortunates by Kim Liggett || HORROR || A guy is responsible for a fatal accident and wants to own up for it but his privilege gets it swept under the rug. He runs away and somehow gets stuck in a cave with strangers and there’s an unknown entity in there hunting them.

Hullmetal Girls by Emily Skrutskie || SCI-FI || A girl whose brother contracted a plague volunteers to become a mechanically enhanced soldier to help get him a cure. There’s a rebellion and girls falling in love with each other. I started The Abyss Surrounds Us recently and am hooked so I can’t wait for this.

Contagion by Erin Bowman || SCI-FI || A space crew gets a SOS call to a distant planet only to find it covered in dead bodies. There’s monsters that are waiting to be unleashed. All I need to know.

Scream All Night by Derek Milman || HORROR || This gives me major Night Film vibes and I am SO EXCITED. It’s about a boy who goes back to his father’s castle like studios where he directed all his famous b-grade horror movies.

Scream and Scream Again edited by R.L. Stine || ANTHOLOGY || R.L. Stine is the reason why I love horror and all things weird. I can’t wait to see what this anthology of horror stories has in store for me!

Girls’ Night Out by Liz Fenton || THRILLER || Three estranged friends meet up for a night out and one goes missing. The other two girls have to look for her whilst confronting what made them become estranged. Is it bad that I’m excited for this because one of the characters has the same name as me? Okay, cool.

The Darkest Legacy by Alexandra Bracken || DYSTOPIA || This is a companion novel to The Darkest Minds series. It takes place 5 years after In the Afterlight and is in Zu’s POV! I am both scared and excited for this because I love how the series ended and I hope nothing too bad happens!!

The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas || THRILLER || Every cheerleader in town has ~mysteriously~ died. The main character’s sister was one of those cheerleaders and now she’s in the center of everything. I really loved Little Monsters by Kara Thomas so hopefully this will be just as enjoyable!

After the Lights Go Out by Lili Wilkinson || DYSTOPIA || The MC is the daughter of a doomsday prepper. One day the lights go out and they don’t come back on and everything outside has changed~.

The Dark Beneath the Ice by Amelinda Berube || PARANORMAL || A girl is possessed by a spirit and attempts an exorcism to get rid of it, but it just makes the spirit angrier. This book is shelved as LGBT on Goodreads, but I’m not sure what the rep is.

The Truth Lies Here by Lindsey Klingele || SCI-FI || A girl’s conspiracy theorist father goes missing and other people in town start showing up dead in the woods. I LIVE for conspiracy theories so this sounds like it’s going to be so good.

Mirage by Somaiya Daud || SCI-FI || A girl dreams of escaping her planet which is ruled by a ruthless empire. She gets kidnapped and taken to a royal palace and discovers she’s almost identical to a princess. I have an ARC of this and I’m really excited to read it!

Seafire by Natalie C. Parker || FANTASY || A ragtag team of all girl pirates with queer rep??? What more do I even need to say? YES THANK YOU PLEASE.

City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab || PARANORMAL || The MC’s parents are ghost hunters (hello me being automatically interested because I also do paranormal investigating). Her parents score a TV gig and go to Edinburgh and unbeknown to them she /actually/ can see ghosts and has to help move them on.

Toil & Trouble edited by Jessica Spotswood & Tess Sharpe || ANTHOLOGY || As someone who adores everything to do with witches I haven’t read nearly enough witch stories so I’m really excited for this collection of short stories that are all to do with witchy things. This has queer rep too – I’m not sure what official labels but Tess Sharpe confirmed there is going to be f/f stories.

Hidden Pieces by Paula Stokes || THRILLER || There was a fire and the MC knows more than what she’s letting on. Someone else knows too. Cue threatening messages being sent to her. Definitely nothing new, but I’m just trash for any kind of thriller okay.

Meet Me at the Intersection Edited by Rebecca Lim || ANTHOLOGY || This is a collection of #ownvoices short stories that focus on first nations, POC, disabled and LGBTQIA+ Australians. I’m being sent a copy and I can’t wait to read it!

Not Even Bones by Rebecca Schaefter || PARANORMAL || A girl’s mother kills supernatural creatures and sells their body parts on the black market. When she saves one of them she ends up getting sold in its place and will do whatever it takes to escape.

Sadie by Courtney Summers || THRILLER || A girl’s sister is murdered and she decides to take matters into her own hands when the police botch the investigation. This apparently has Serial podcast vibes. I also have an ARC of this and I’m hoping to read it for Phase 2 of the Marvel-A-Thon (that’s if I ever finish Phase 1 🙃).

Unbroken edited by Marieke Nijkamp || ANTHOLOGY || An #ownvoices short story collection that focuses on disability.

Nightingale by Amy Lukavics || HORROR || Set in the 1950s a girl is put into an asylum when she goes against her family’s wishes and refuses to marry the boy they want her to. The asylum is doing some pretty messed up and gruesome stuff to its patients. I am normally pretty apprehensive about books that paint mental health institutions in negative lights, but at the same time it’s one of my favourite horror tropes? This gives me Suckerpunch vibes though and I loved Daughters Unto Devils so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green || CONTEMPORARY || A girl discovers a giant sculpture dubbed “The Carls”. She records a video and her friend uploads it to YouTube. The video goes viral and she has to deal with the aftermath. Other “The Carls” are also appearing all over the world. She has to figure out what they are and what they want. This kind of gives me Sleeping Giant vibes, but a contemporary-ish version? Also, the MC is 23 which makes me happy. We need more non-Romance exclusive books with 20-somethings.

The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzie Lee || HISTORICAL || A companion to The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice & Virtue that focuses on Felicity. She wants to become a research assistant for a doctor she admires but can’t afford it. A mysterious girl offers to help if Felicity lets her pretend to be her maid. When she finds out why there’s Drama, Adventures and Quests. I’m dying to get my hands on this because I fell in love with Felicity immediately and she’s honestly one of my all time favourite characters.

Broken Things by Lauren Oliver || THRILLER || Everyone thinks two girls killed their best friend because of their obsession with a fantasy book. On the anniversary of their friends death they get pulled back together and have to confront what really happened.

Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor || FANTASY || The sequel to Strange the Dreamer! I honestly don’t even think I can say ANYTHING about this because #spoilers BUT I AM SO EXCITED TO DIVE BACK INTO THIS WORLD AND BE BLESSED BY LAINI’S WRITING STYLE.

Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand || FANTASY || A group of girls decide to find out what “ravenous evil” has been stealing girls away from their island.

What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli & Adam Silvera || CONTEMPORARY || I STILL CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS A THING THAT’S HAPPENING MY FAVES ARE CO-WRITING A BOOK. Two boys meet-cute in a post office, but life keeps getting in their way.

A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi || CONTEMPORARY || This focuses on a Muslim girl not long after 9/11 happens and how she’s targeted because of her race and religion.

This Is What It Feels Like by Rebecca Barrow || CONTEMPORARY || This is about girl bands and girls loving girls and that’s all I really need to know?? It looks to deal with some serious issues like alcoholism and addiction but also looks like it’s going to be really soft and fun.

This Splintered Silence by Kayla Olson || SCI-FI || A girl who’s now leader of a space station has to deal with a virus wiping out everyone. When someone from a new generation dies from the same symptoms she has to come to terms with the virus either mutating or that someone is killing people.

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite || THRILLER || Okay, I don’t know how I hadn’t heard of this until like 5 seconds ago but it’s about a Nigerian woman whose sister keeps killing her boyfriends and she has to help her cover up the murders. I AM LEGIT SCREAMING??? I WANT TO READ THIS RIGHT NOW.

The Fade by Demitria Lunetta || PARANORMAL || Four girls went missing and the MC is convinced they were murdered in her basement because she can feel a hostile presence.

  1. There are so many amazing books being released later this USA right?! And I get what you mean because I’m not always up to date on release dates. 🙂
I’m so excited for The Darkest Legacy, but I need to re-read the original trilogy again because I’m not 100% clear on what happened, also I really really can’t wait for City of Ghosts. V.E. Schwab is one of my favourite authors so she’s what drew me to that book more than anything else.
October is the month when most of my anticipated releases are being released (I’m already in mourning for my bank account!)
Great post Lauren, and I hope you enjoy all these books as well! 🙂 ❤️

  2. I feel the same way about What if it’s Us. I’m also nervous because yes these two authors are amazing on their own, but what if the hype ruins it? I feel like I burst a bubble saying that, but I’m still very excited about it! 😀 😀

  3. LAUREN this post is so good and also just RUINED MY LIFE. Some of these are anticipated for me too, like What If Its Us, the Lady’s Guide, Hullmetal Girls and City of Ghosts are all top TBR’s for me. There’s way too many good books coming out soon jfhgdkjf. Also, this post is SO WELL CONSTRUCTED AND BEAUTIFUL I love it

  4. So many interesting sounding books here! Definitely intrigued about Victoria Schwab’s MG book, I love the books I’ve read by her so far. Looks like you’ve got plenty to keep you going here 😀

  5. AHH this is such a fantastic post, I love all of your most anticipated releases and ahhh there are just SO MANY BOOKS, I have no idea how I’ll manage to read them all haha.I’m especially excited about Hank Green’s book, because I love him and his book sounds so interesting and yes to 20-something main characters as well! And Lauren Oliver’s book, obviously, since she is my favorite of all times 😀
Thank you for sharing, Lauren! ❤ ❤

  6. SO MANY NEW RELEASES AAAAAAAAAAARGH.
I feel what you say about The Darkest Legacy (though I still haven’t inished the trilogy). I am always scared when they continue series that had ended because even though I am excited and want more, I don’t want them to change my feelings on the original novels. We’ll see how it goes, but IT’S IN ZU’S POV, so that’s a lot already.
So happy to see your post, btw ❤

  7. I had no idea Hank Green was releasing a novel! That sounds interesting and I LOVE the fact the protagonist is in her 20’s. I feel like the reason I’ve been so disconnected from reading lately is that I can’t find more books that feature women in their early twenties trying to navigate adulthood and all that jazz. I also need to read Strange the Dreamer, but I am still so excited to get Muse of Nightmares!

    1. omg yeah i only found out when i was looking at new releases lists on goodreads!! right it sounds so interesting and it’s so so good seeing a MC in their 20s. I totally get the disconnect thing too because adult fiction is normally always characters in their 30s-40s navigating family/married life and then the books with 20-somethings are normally ALWAYS heavily romance based (and not even normally healthy romance) and like it’s so not accurate to the true 20s experience!!

I hope you enjoy Strange the Dreamer!! It’s seriously amazing 💕

  8. Seeing this post made me realize that I’ve been so out of the loop with the bookish community because I don’t recognize more than half the books listed here!!! Hahaha I only recognize the books coming out in October, I guess… What If It’s Us is also my most anticipated book because Becky’s writing is always light while Adam’s heavy and laced with dark emotion so I’m intrigued to see their collaboration. And Muse of Nightmare, I’m sure I’ll be excited for it once I finished Strange the Dreamer… which I still haven’t done until now 😛

  9. EEEP so many awesome reads here! I already have copies of Hullmetal Girls, and Mirage, as well as an eARC of Sadie, and I can’t wait to read them! I’m also SOOOO stoked for Hidden Pieces (I love Paula Stokes’ writing!!!), Not Even Bones (yaaas black market stories), and What If It’s Us (DUH). I also didn’t know until now that Tahereh’s new book is a contemporary diverse novel!?!?! HELL YEAH.
