Books I’ve Loved Lately but Haven’t Reviewed

Books I Loved But Haven't Reviewed

This is the second post I’ve done in this “unofficial” series! You can find the first one here. Basically everyone knows how much I LOATHE writing reviews. It causes me literal anxiety for a number of reasons. I tend to only write reviews for books that I received from Netgalley or Publishers so that means a lot of backlist books I read don’t really get a chance to have the spotlight. I decided to do these posts as a way to bring some attention to them also because I’m lazy.

The Upside of Unrequited Begin, End, Begin: A #LoveOzYA Anthology Dangerous Girls We Are Okay

The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli – A book that focuses on crushes and a relationship is normally my Worst Nightmare, but Becky Albertalli just knows how to tug at my heartstrings. Molly was an incredibly relatable character in terms of her anxiety. I really appreciated the fat rep too. I’m mostly okay with not having a “conventional” or “socially acceptable” body, but it’s still nice to see it be represented in a way that doesn’t involve shaming. If I had this book when I was in my early teens it would have helped SO much. This book made me laugh and cry and it put me in a really good headspace.

Begin, End, Begin: A #LoveOzYA Anthology edited by Danielle Binks – As an Aussie I LOVE supporting and promoting Aussie YA. This is a collection of short stories written by Australian authors. Not all of them are set in Australia. One of my favourite’s is by Amie Kaufman and it’s about two girls in love on Mars!!!! Another favourite is by Lili Wilkinson which is about two girls falling in love whilst trying to find a witch in an underground drain. There’s sci-fi and contemporary and it’s a perfect mix of everything. If you want a sampler of some great Aussie authors definitely check this out!!

Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas – I love thrillers, but I’m so familiar with the genre it takes A LOT to truly impress me and Dangerous Girls did that. It has a lot of tropes, but it’s one of the most addicting thrillers I’ve read (especially in YA). I love unreliable narrators and Abigail Haas portrayed it perfectly. Whilst I did guess the plot twist I still found myself feeling incredibly anxious during the “reveal”. I couldn’t sleep one night and started reading this at 3am and then suddenly it was like 7am. I couldn’t stop thinking about this book once I finished it. // Trigger Warnings: violence, death

We Are Okay by Nina Lacour – A lot of people say this book is boring, but I completely disagree. It definitely isn’t plot driven and is more of a character study, but it’s so incredibly beautiful. The way it handles grief related so much to situations I’ve been through. When I was reading this it was like Nina Lacour took all my jumbled thoughts and put them into words that made sense. It made me feel sad and hopeful all at the same time. We Are Okay is easily one of my new all time favourite books and one of the best books I’ve read this year. // Trigger Warnings: depression, grief, death

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue Down Among the Sticks and Bones (Wayward Children, #2) All the Rage The Refrigerator Monologues

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue – Equally heartbreaking (there are some SERIOUS topics discussed in this book) and heartwarming Gentleman’s Guide was such a fun ride. I don’t normally get along with historicals, but this was just so good. I loved the adventure feel. Everything was super vivid and I felt like I was right there. The thing that hooked me the most about this though was the characters. I loved them all. A lot of people definitely won’t get along with Monty, but I always have a weak spot for the overly pretentious characters who learn and grow. The M/M romance between Percy and Monty was ADORABLE and I hadn’t shipped something so much in a really long time. Felicity is one of my new all time favourite female characters. // Trigger Warnings: parental abuse (physical & emotional), homophobia, racism, suicidal thoughts and alcohol

Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire – I fell in love with Every Heart A Doorway last year. It hit me so hard because it captured the feeling of your home not really being a home. It was also the first time I’d seen the word “aromantic” mentioned. Whilst I didn’t love this prequel quite as much I still really, really loved it. There were EXTREMELY important discussions about how harmful it is to force gender roles on people. It was also super whimsical and haunting. // Trigger warnings: death of a queer character

All the Rage by Courtney Summers  – Another really important book that looks at how hard it is for women to deal with rape. Everyone tells women to come forward, but they do and no one believes them. One of the things I really appreciated about All the Rage was that it focused on the aftermath of rape and what a victim goes through rather than giving page time to the actual rapist. This was an incredibly hard read, but it’s also an important one because this gives voice to so many women’s stories. I wish we didn’t live in a world were the default was to not believe women who report assaults and rapes, but since we do I’m glad this book exists. // Trigger Warnings: rape, sexual assault, non-consensual actions, drug and alcohol use

The Refridgerator Monologues by Catherynne M. Valente – If you love comics and women in comics this is a MUST READ. Hell, even if you just love women. For too long women have been tortured and killed simply to further the storyline of men and it’s so wrong. This collection of intertwined short stories gives voices to those women. Each short story is loosely based on an existing comic book character like Gwen Stacy and Harley Quinn. // Trigger Warnings: abuse, violence

  1. Down Among the Sticks and Bones is high on my TBR ! I read Every Heart a Doorway very recently and loved it so much, my favourite character was Jack 💙💙💙 It’s actually the first book I read with the word ‘aromantic’ mentioned too ! It’s refreshing to come across an aromantic Main Character for once !

  2. I’ve heard awesome things about Down Among the Sticks and Bones but I’v also been told to read Every Heart a Doorway First. Also, Gentleman’s Guide was so wonderful!!

  3. Thank you for this – I agree with how you feel about reviews.
Most of the time I would rather just keep reading than stop to review…then I have the problem that I forget to note down interesting quotes because I just want to devour the book. I’m also really new to book blogging so don’t feel all that confident that I have anything new to add to the discussion. I like your idea of posting a quick update for those you have loved. I have been thinking about reading ‘We are okay’ so will move it up the TBR pile. 🙂

    1. Ah yeah, I’m so bad at taking notes or like remembering details that I should talk about. Definitely don’t feel like your voice on things isn’t needed though ♥ Even if the book has been reviewed a million times, you still have something to add!! These kinds of summary posts are so much easier though, haha.

      Yay!! Hope you love it.

  4. Begin, End, Begin and The Refrigerator Monologues sounds amazing! I hadn’t heard of them before so thanks for bringing it to my attention 🙂 Definitely checking them out

I really liked The Upside as well and I need The Gentleman’s Guide ASAP. It sounds so good!!

  5. I just finished Gentleman’s Guide To Vice and Virtue and I absolutely adored it! Completely agree with your feelings on it! And of course also on The Upside of Unrequited. Becky Albertalli really does know how to tug on those heartstrings 🙂 And I so need to read All The Rage, We Are Okay and Seanan McGuire books!

  6. I need to read Down Among the Sticks and Bones. I really loved the first book but despite how excited I was for the release of the second one I still haven’t gotten around to it yet! It’s the same with The Upside of Unrequited actually, I’ve seen nothing but good reviews for that one and really want to get started on it myself. Maybe one day. 🙂
Oh I loved The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue as well, and yeah I hadn’t shipped two characters in a long time like I shipped Monty and Percy in that book, there were just so many misunderstanding between the two of them and I just wanted them to be happy. 🙂
I’m glad to see you enjoyed all these books Lauren. 😀 ❤

  7. As much as I love books and talking about books, it never occurs to me to write a full-blown review for a book unless it literally changed my life. I don’t like to include spoilers when I’m talking about books, so there’s often little to say anyway, which is why I do “summary” posts after I’ve read a few books, much like this post. It’s so much easier, which means I can get back to reading more!

    1. Haha, yes same!!! If I’m not writing a review for an ARC then it’s either because I loved the book so much I want to scream about it OR I hated it with every fibre of my being 😂 I prefer these summaries and list type posts so much more!!

  8. Wow these all look like amazing books!!! All the Rage sounds rather interesting…I saw something in the news the other day about a girl who was gang raped and the only reason the rapists were found guilty was because they had taped it on their go-pro. It’s so, so sad that that is what it comes down to these days…if anything, even more victims won’t come forward because they are going to think that you need to have video evidence 😦

I’m so glad to see more and more m/m and f/f relationships in books, it makes my heart so happy!!! I will be adding each and every one of these books to my TBR list. Great reviews, and don’t worry I’m not a fan of reviews either (but I tend to not do them very much which is probably why I don’t get any ARC’s haha).

  9. I cannot WAIT to read The Refrigerator Monologues! Someone I know actually just recently had Catherynne M. Valente come speak at her bookstore and I wish I could have made it. All The Rage sounds really good too, so I just added it to my TBR! Thanks for sharing these books. 🙂

  10. I love these mini-reviews! They’re concise and they get to the point which I like.
I need to read Vice & Virtue. I’m mostly a contemporary girl but almost everyone who has read this book is a huge fan so I feel like I need to give it a shot 🙂

  11. Oh man, so many good books! 😂 WAO and AtR are just incredible, I’m so glad you loved them! I still have Dangerous Girls sitting on my shelf that I’ve forgotten about until now, but if you’ve enjoyed it that much I’m definitely going to make an effort to get round to it at some point now 😬

  12. This is a great way to highlight books you loved, but didn’t review. I’m like 15-20 books behind reviews, and I’m having a mini freakout over it. That’s why I started grouping books and doing mini reviews, but even those have started falling behind. 😦

I can’t wait to read WE ARE OKAY. The cover is so stunning, and I loved Nina LaCour’s other book. I also really need to read ALL THE RAGE. I’ve had it on my shelf for a while now, just haven’t gotten to it quite yet. Wonderful post, Lauren. ❤

    1. I have SO much respect for people who do full reviews (or even mini ones) for every book they read. Your reviews are some of my favourite because they’re always so thought out and I’m constantly in awe of them, haha.

I really want to read more of her books after reading We Are Okay! I hope you enjoy both of them!!

  14. Great post, Lauren! I haven’t read any of these books, but I’m excited to read most of them so I’m glad to hear you loved them. I loved Simon vs. and feel like everyone also liked Albertalli’s sophomore novel, so I’m really eager to read it soon. Also, We Are Okay sounds like quite an emotional and good read, so I can’t wait to read it 🙂

  15. Love this post Lauren! Writing reviews makes me anxious too. I felt exactly the same way about The Upside of Unrequited – the anxiety and fat rep meant a lot to me, and I wish this book had been around when I was a teenager because I think it would have helped me feel more normal. We Are Okay and The Gentleman’s Guide both sound fantastic – I want to pick both of these up so much ❤

      1. Me too! I really wish there were more adult books that had anxiety rep too. YA does it so well, but I would love to read a book about someone my age with anxiety. And I just finished The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and I totally agree with you on it’s wonderfulness! ❤

  16. Oh I love this new feature of yours! I definitely missed the first post on this. I, like you, loved We Are Okay. The message behind the book is everything to me, ugh it was so heartbreaking good. I definitely want to pick up The Upside of Everything and I know I will love it because I adored her other book, Simon Vs. It’s been sitting on my shelf and I am just waiting to get on that contemporary kick to get to it. The Gentleman’s Guide is another book that has RAVE reviews everywhere I turn and I cannot wait to read it. Awesome post Lauren ❤

  17. Catherynne M. Valente comic!! Her novels have been a bit hot or cold for me but I’m excited to start one of her comics and this sounds awesome 😀
Great mini review post, I loved Gentlemans Guide and the anthology too 🙂

  18. I feel like this is such a great post idea. I find it’s usually when I get behind on reviewing that I feel overwhelmed and end up in a slump, but this looks like a great way to knock it all out at once. Great post Lauren!
