Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag

Mid Year Book Freak Out

HOW ARE WE AT THE POINT THAT I’M DOING THIS TAG AGAIN?!?!!? I wasn’t tagged by anyone, but I’m doing this anyway because it’s a good way to look back at the past six months!!

This tag was created by Chami @ ReadLikeWildFire and Ely @ Ely Jayne. It’s where we look back at (and freak out over) the books we’ve read during the past six months.

Despite my inability to stick to any kind of a structured TBR I’m pretty happy with my reading so far this year! I’ve read 53 books so far and unlike last year the majority of them are ACTUALLY novels not graphic novels, haha. I already reached the first Goodreads goal I set for myself. I just wish I was better at finishing series.

Best Book You’ve Read So Far In 2017

I can’t choose?????

We Are Okay They Both Die at the End Noteworthy A Conjuring of Light (Shades of Magic, #3)

Queens of Geek The Upside of Unrequited More Happy Than Not Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, #1)

I love these all so much for a multitude of different reasons. I love the characters, the stories and I’ve been able to relate on a personal level to a lot of them. Can we also talk about how these are all contemporaries except ACOL and Strange the Dreamer??? That’s such a rarity 😂 These are all 5 stars except Strange the Dreamer but I’m including this here because Laini Taylor is a creative genius and it’s one of the most unique fantasies I’ve read.

This has been a good reading year so far for sure 💪🏻

Best sequel you’ve read so far this year?

Down Among the Sticks and Bones (Wayward Children, #2) A Conjuring of Light (Shades of Magic, #3)

You can tell how terrible I am with continuing series with the answer to this question. These are the only 2 “sequels” to series I’ve read this year and technically neither of them are sequels?? Down Among the Sticks and Bones is a prequel and A Conjuring of Light is the final book in the series. I LOVED THEM BOTH SO MUCH THOUGH. Down Among the Sticks and Bones brought up a lot of important discussions about gender roles and I’m still not ready to let go of the Shades of Magic series.

New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To

The Hate U Give

I’m actually trash for not having read this yet. I’m the worst and I’m going to try and get to it REALLY soon.

Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year

The Merciless III: Origins of Evil (The Merciless, #3) Because You Love to Hate Me: 13 Tales of Villainy There's Someone Inside Your House The Ship of the Dead (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, #3)

I’m trash for The Merciless series so I can’t wait for the third installment! Bloomsbury is sending me a copy of Because You Love to Hate Me and I can’t wait. I love villains so I really hope the ones in here are well-written (which I’m sure they will be with authors like V.E. Schwab and Adam Silvera!!). There’s Someone Inside Your House has been on my TBR since it was untitled so to say I’m excited for that is an understatement. I’M ALSO NOT READY FOR THE FINAL BOOK IN THE MAGNUS CHASE SERIES. The second book in the series made me totally fall in love with it.

Biggest Disappointment

The Whole of My World Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1) One Of Us Is Lying The Roanoke Girls

Go figure I read all of these in the same month??? I was so excited to read The Whole of My World because it’s an Aussie YA that heavily focuses on AFL. I loved it because it really got what it was like to be a footy fan and captured the culture really well, but there was a relationship between the MC (who was 14-15) and a male character who was 30. It made me so uncomfortable. There was a fair bit of misogyny too.  I think I may have liked Shatter Me when it was first published, but now that I’m older I noticed all the borderline abuse dressed up as romance. I still need to write a full review for One of Us is Lying but short version: it glorified suicide. The Roanoke Girls was a mess that romantised so many serious issues like abuse and incest.

Biggest Surprise

Daughters Unto Devils A House at the Bottom of a Lake

I never get scared by horror books, but both of these books changed that. They had me so on edge the entire time. The both featured some of my biggest phobias (open spaces, water) so that probably played a part on it, but they were so incredibly atmospheric.

Also, as a whole I’m just surprised by the fact that the majority of the books I’ve read this year have been contemporaries????? That is normally my least read genre, but man contemporaries have been KILLING IT this year.

Favourite New Author (Debut or New To You)

ADAM SILVERA🌈 Becky Albertalli

ADAM SILVERA AND BECKY ALBERTALLI!!!! They’re not debut but they’re new to me because I’ve read ALL their books this year. THEY COULD WRITE A PHONE BOOK OR A MENU AND I’D PAY MONEY TO READ IT.

Newest Fictional Crush

I’m an old lady and I read YA so yeah….. I don’t really have any??? It would be a little weird if I did, haha. I guess I could maybe say Holland 👀👀👀

Newest Favourite Character

HOLLAND 😭😭😭😭😭😭 After I finished A Conjuring of Light he was literally all I cared about. I love him so much and my heart hurts so bad. MY POOR SON. HE DESERVES HAPPINESS!!!!!!!!!

Book That Made You Cry

They Both Die at the End A Conjuring of Light (Shades of Magic, #3)

When doesn’t a book make me cry??? but these two are STAND OUTS. I honestly cried so much during both of them??? Like the entire final 30% of ACOL I was in TEARS and TBDATE had me crying for like 20 minutes after I finished it.

Book That Made You Happy

Noteworthy  Queens of Geek Giant Days, Vol. 3 (Giant Days #3)

Noteworthy and Queens of Geek made me SO HAPPY. They discuss so many important issues, but they are so cute and fun and adorable and if you haven’t read them then WHY???????? Also I FINALLY read Volume 3 of Giant Days and it’s such a fun comic series that never fails to make me smile.

Favorite Book to Film Adaptation

I haven’t watched any 💁🏻.

Favorite Post You Have Done This Year

I haven’t been the most consistent or original post year, but I have a couple!

Noteworthy by Riley Redgate

I’m really happy with this review! It’s a bit rambley and not “professional” AT ALL, but I think it really showed just how much I ADORED this book. It seemed to get a positive reaction too so!!! It also made me realise that I need to stop being so hard on myself when it comes to reviews. I always feel self-conscious about them because I definitely don’t have elite writing skills. My grammar is probably non-existent since I never really had a higher education.

Hi I'm Aromantic.png

On a more personal note then definitely my post where I talked about being Aromantic. I feel like it’s an orientation that does not get enough attention. I felt nervous about this post for so many reasons and I put off posting it like 5 times. I didn’t want people to think I was trying to take anything away from other people in the queer community who struggle more, but I think I managed to handle everything respectfully.

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year

I’ve bought hardly any books this year because I’m BROKE AF, but I recieved a signed copy of Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor from Hachette Australia and it’s beautiful 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

What Book Do You Need to Read by the End of the Year

I said this last year too but: ALL OF THEM????

Like my TBR is ridiculous. I am so behind on EVERYTHING.

I have a 2017 TBR shelf on Goodreads that I’m adding to CONSTANTLY. Some main ones from that shelf though:

Vicious (Villains, #1) The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1) Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows, #2) The Hate U Give

sep

Would love to hear your thoughts on any of these books!

What’s been your favourite (or least favourite) read so far this year?

I hope you’re all having a fantastic day.

  1. I’m posting my version of this super late, like in a week or two, but I love how similar our answers were on certain things. Noteworthy is the book that made me happy, and also I haven’t seen any film adaptations this year because I’m awful about seeing movies. 🙂

    1. Ooh, I’m looking forward to seeing it 😀 I was going to put this off for a bit because I was like “what if I read a book in the first couple weeks of July that I love???” 😂 It was such a wonderful book! I knew I was going to like it, but I ended up absolutely loving it to pieces. So glad you did too!! I’m TERRIBLE with movies as well. I’m lucky if I watch 5 a year, haha.

  2. So many great books on your list! ACOL had me sobbing at freaking 4AM and then wanting to call my mom in the middle of the night because of one scene. I was a mess. I am hoping to read Adam’s books this year though I don’t really know when the perfect time would be to get utterly heartbroken by a book? xD

  3. Oh Lauren, you are not alone – I haven’t read The Hate U Give yet either….We will read it eventually, right? Whenever I can buy it, haha. I’m a bit scared of the hype, I’ll admit it, but it definitely is a must read 🙂
That Strange The Dreamer copy is absolutely stunning, AND signed, you are SO lucky! 😀
    Great answers! 🙂

  4. ACOL was everything I wanted it to be and so much more. Holland </3 He has one of the best character arcs I've ever read. I keep looking at my copy of Strange the Dreamer but it's one of those books I have to be in the mood to read. This has been a great year for contemporary books for me to.

  5. Seems like you got through some great books for the first half of this year Lauren, and I love seeing how many times A Conjuring of Light made this list as well! 😀 It’s an amazing books so I’m not really surprised to see it on your list this often either.
Strange the Dreamer is amazing, and definitely the most beautiful book I’ve gotten this year so far as well. I really need to read Down Among the Sticks and Bones soon, and oh I am so excited for Because You Love to Hate Me as well. Great answers for this tag Lauren, and I hope you have an amazing second half of the year as well. 🙂 >3

  6. Wowie! You’ve read some amazing books so far this year! I’m so jealous – I was so stressed in university that my reading for the first few months of the year plummeted and I’m just now getting back on track.
I’m sooooo looking forward to starting The Shades of Magic series – definitely on the top of my July TBR (after I finish When Dimple Met Rishi that is 🙂 )
I look forward to reading more from you soon!
    Happy Reading 🙂

  7. 21 books ahead of schedule is awesome!!! Oh A Conjuring of Light was just so good wasn’t it!!! I loved Holland, I really wish he had a happier ending 😦 I didn’t get to read your post about being aromantic, I definitely will though and I completely agree that it is something that needs to spoken about more. Yes you definitely need to read Crooked Kingdom, it’s soooooo good!!! Awesome post 🙂

  8. I’ve honestly heard such wonderful things about the Merciless series, and it sounds like something that will be right up my alley, so I don’t know why I haven’t gotten to it yet, ha. Basically your entire “best books of 2017 so far” list is on my TBR, except for Noteworthy and A Conjuring of Light – both of which I read and adored.

I also totally agree about Shatter Me – I honestly don’t understand the hype, and now that I know who the main character ends up with, there are so many glaring problems in the book. I also just couldn’t get into the writing at all. 😦 Great post, Lauren!

  9. You need to get to Crooked Kingdom and THUG soon!!! They’re both so fantastic! I want to read Vicious by the end of 2017 too 🙂 Your copy of Strange the Dreamer is absolutely beautiful!

  10. Great post! You’ve read some wonderful books and you know I share your love for Adam Silvera. He’s the best. ❤

I'm sorry to see that One of Us Is Lying was a disappointment. I didn't know it glorified suicide, which is obviously not okay. I wish I hadn't ordered it (a couple of days ago) but I'll read it anyway and see for myself. I'm looking forward to your review.

    1. Thank you!!!

There were some definitely parts of it enjoyed like the take on characters being reduced to one trope, but yeah a lot of it didn’t sit right. I don’t want to speak for everyone who has been suicidal or has lost someone to suicide, but that was my take on it!

  11. I did this tag recently. There are a lot of books in this post that I need to read. I need to finish the Shades of Magic books. I need to read Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera’s newest releases. I need to read THUG. There are so many books I need to read! This is stressful!

  12. READ CROOKED KINGDOM LAUREN, READ THE FREAKING BOOK !!!!! (and let it destroy you)

I love More Happy than Not, Queens of Geek and a Conjuring of Light so much, they kicked my ass when I tried reviewing them (and I still haven’t done my Upside review, I’m procrastinating it because…. reasons)
We Are Okay is actually on my July TBR which I’ll be reading with Sara (Freadom Library) which I think I told you hahah and I’m SUPER excited about that because it sounds right up my alley.

    1. I KNOW I NEED TO BUT I DON’T WANT TO FADWA CANT I JUST IGNORE IT AND PRETEND IT NEVER ENDS 😩😩😩

Props for actually writing reviews for them because if I tried to write a review for ACOL it would have just been me screaming. I did manage one for QoG though. I’m so so excited for you to both read it!!! I hope you love it!!

  16. I know what you mean about the second book in the Magnus trilogy making you fall in love with it. The first book was… good, but I had my problems with it. The second book? My good it was GOOD. AMAZING. FANTASTIC. I loved every second of it and now I cannot wait for the finale.
Love this tag, and your take on it (:
You sure have read a lot this past six month… *so jealous* 😛

  17. 53 books is awesome! I liked Queens of Geek a lot, and can’t wait for There’s Someone in the House. Curious to see how she’ll do with that. And A House At the Bottom Of A Lake does look kinda spooky- love that cover!

I agree contemps have been killing it this year. I don’t even read a lot of contemps but I have been lately and there have been lots of good ones…

I loved Long Way To A Small Angry Planet, hope you like it too!

  18. You are going great with your reading!!! 53 books is awesome!

I am sooo excited for There’s Someone Inside Your House! It is a massive jump from Anna and the French Kiss!

I actually enjoyed One Of Us Is Lying. I liked the whole mystery/who-dunnit side of the book.

  19. Crooked!! Kingdom!! If there is one book/series you MUST finish for the rest of the year, it’s that one. 😛 I recently-ish reread it and it was THE BEST THING EVER. Oh, I’m in the same boat for Vicious! Must read it ahah. Oh and Adam Silvera and Becky Albertalli are sooooo amazing. ❤ Noteworthy and Queens of Geek are both on my TBR and I don't know how I haven't read them yet??! GAH. So many books I must read!
