Reading & Blogging Confessions

Reading and Blogging Confessions

As the kids would say: prepare to be shook reader fam

reading confessions

I don’t care if my books are in prime condition. I prefer when they’re not.

I’m 100% not one of those people who love their books to look constantly immaculate condition. I mean I get it and that’s cool, but I love when books look used and well read. Give me broken spines and worn covers. My hardcover edition of Order of the Phoenix has the entire spine missing and it’s one of my favourite books ever. Whilst I’m dropping bombshells I also don’t care about dogearing pages. I use bookmarks now, but only because I’ve acquired them from publishers and book depository otherwise I’d probably still be dogearing. Obviously I would never dogear a library book or someone else’s book though.

I prefer reading ebooks to physical books.

Pretty self explanatory. I love buying physical books and having them in my possession, but when it comes to reading – ebooks are my jam. I find them so much easier to read and they are a million times more convenient. Except when your Kindle dies halfway through a chapter and your charger cord doesn’t reach your bed.

I have to be reading multiple books at once.

I wish I could dedicate my entire attention to one book at a time, but I can’t ??? I need to have multiple books on the go in order to not get distracted. It’s also because I’m a huge mood reader so I need a bunch of different genres.

I don’t care about owning multiple copies of the same book.

I’ve found that a lot of people are constantly seeking out every edition/ARC ever of books and that’s so not me???? There’s a few exceptions with this like I really want the Hufflepuff edition of Harry Potter, but otherwise I’m totally fine with one copy. I love receiving ARCs, but I don’t go out of my way to hunt them down.

I’m terrible with series.

The amount of series I’ve actually finished is TERRIBLE. I don’t even know why, but I have SERIOUS comittment issues when it comes to series. It’s either because I get distracted and wait way too long between each book or I don’t want them to end. I STILL HAVEN’T READ CROOKED KINGDOM BECAUSE I’M SCARED AND IF I DON’T READ IT THEN NOTHING BAD CAN HAPPEN OKAY. 😰😰

I’ve never DNF’d a book and I don’t know if I ever will.

Yep, you read that right. Maybe it’s because I’ve only been reading properly again for under two years, but it’s mostly because I’m stubborn as HELL. I am definitely not against DNF-ing. I totally respect and understand the concept. Life is too short to read books you’re not enjoying. However, for me, the only time I think I’d ever DNF a book is if it was extremely problematic. I LIKE TO SUFFER.

blogging confessions

I’ll sometimes like posts without reading them.

Sometimes when life hates me or if I see a post that I don’t think I can add anything of value to I’ll like it without reading it. Does this make me a terrible blogger? I don’t know. I just feel like it’s a nice way to be like “hey I support you and this post”. I’ll also do this for reviews of sequels or books I want to go into not knowing anything.

I don’t have a blog schedule and I don’t schedule posts in advance.

Okay the second part is half true. Sometimes I WILL schedule posts, but the most is like a day or two in advance. I have no plans when it comes to this blog. Most days I write posts on a whim. I never have any idea what I want to post.

I am TERRIBLE at replying to follow up comments.

THE LITERAL WORST AND I AM SO SO SO SORRY YOU FOLLOW A HUMAN TRASH CAN AND I’M TRYING TO GET BETTER OKAY. I like to think I’m alright at blog hopping and commenting on other’s posts, but I am so bad at replying to people who have replied to me. I’m sorry!!!!! I’m trying to be better.

Original content and reviews are my kryptonite.

I TRY SO HARD BUT IN THE END IT DOESN’T EVEN MATTER BECAUSE I’M STILL HORRIBLE AT BOTH. At first I used to get really down that I couldn’t come up with amazing discussion posts like a lot of other bloggers, but I’m slowly getting better at accepting it now. I try to make sure that all my tags/lists ect. are as unique as possible. I like to think I put enough of myself into them to make them interesting enough to read. Right?? RIGHT????

The first thing I notice about someone’s blog is their theme.

Maybe it’s because I love design or am all about the aesthetic life, but if someone doesn’t have a clean/nice looking theme with an easy navigation system then chances are I won’t be following their blog. Ultimately, of course your content is the most important but if I can’t navigate your blog to find said content then? I feel like this is often something people forget about. You don’t even have to have anything fancy. Like I’m not expecting everyone to have paid themes and professionally designed graphics (because lol I’ll never have that) just take a few extra minutes to go through all the available themes and have an easy to navigate menu bar.

Do we share any of these? Do you hate me now 😂?

What are some of your own reading or blogging confessions?

I hope you’re all having a fantastic day!

  1. Yay! I’m not the only one who doesn’t care if my books aren’t pristine. I always figured they’re supposed to be read, and it’s harder to enjoy them if I’m overly concerned about keeping them pretty. My original copy of Chamber of Secrets had pages falling out and the spine was held together by tape, but until the pages started disappearing, who cares?

Also, same for owning multiple copies. I’ve got a couple copies of various Harry Potters, but in different languages, so barely counts. I rarely buy finished editions of ARCs I’ve received, because I already have a copy I can read. I don’t need two.

I don’t know how you don’t DNF books. How do you get through them?!?

    1. Aw, I love that sooooo much!!! I feel like it’s such a sign of someone absolutely loving a book? It’s so good.

Yeah, I feel like different languages is definitely an exception and saaame.

I’ve been fortunate enough to only read a few 1-2 star reads. I think I’m easily pleased, haha. Being stubborn as hell helps too 😂

      1. Exactly! That’s always my favourite thing to see in second hand stores too, because someone obviously loved that book enough to read it until that point.

Stubbornness would definitely help 😛 If it means you enjoy more books, easily pleased could be a good thing!

  2. I’m so glad you said what you did about not caring if books are in prime condition. I feel like there’s this weird superiority with some readers about their books being flawless, but I love beat up books! Plus…how do you remember where your favorite quotes are in a book if you don’t dog-ear? I’m also really into e-books: they’re convenient and generally less expensive. Plus, I like that I can carry my personal library around with me wherever I go.

I’m also totally with you on liking posts I don’t read. I go through comment slumps where I can’t put my thoughts into words or whatever, so I’m all about liking posts I want to revisit as well. I view likes as a “I support you and appreciate what you do” gesture.

    1. Riiiiiight. I feel that too!! I don’t mind if people want that, but when it starts to become entitle and “ew, you have used books?” I get REALLY mad because like maybe that’s all someone can afford? Haha, right!! I did start tabbing books, but like I always end up losing the tabs or forgetting to do it 😂 Yesss, ebooks are so convenient!

Exactly what I go through too!!! Sometimes I’m just so drained or whatever so I hope a like is enough.

  3. I share SO many of these. It’s rare for me to not finish a book but I’ve made one or two exceptions. I’ll be honest I take great care of my books so much that people are reluctant to borrow them from me because they know I’ll go nuts if they look worn when returned lol. I’m afraid to start a new series coz I know I’ll get hooked!

    1. Yay!! I think I might have DNF’d more if I’d been continuously reading my whole life, but I had like a 3 year break so I’m still catching up with everything. Haha, that’s understandable. Even though I don’t care about the condition of my books I think I’d still be hesitant to lend them out to people 😂 Yeah, sameee. Then I get distracted because there’s so many new books out there!

  4. Bahhhhh! love the honesty Lauren! Our blogging “styles” are similar in the sense that it’s not set in stone AT ALL! lol. I suck at planning way too in advance, as much as I’d like to plan in advance it just doesn’t work out that way. Lately I’ve been slacking on replying back smh, also trying to get good on that front lol. A good/clean theme makes a difference when it comes to new blogs I’m looking to follow. Great post! 🙂

    1. Haha, thanks Lilly ♥ Riiiiight. I totally admire people who can plan EVERYTHING, but at the same time I’m like…… what kind of magic??? Everything is so spur of the moment for me. So glad I’m not the only one who struggles with replies. I try to set aside a bit of time every night, but I normally forget/get distracted.

  5. OH I love this post so, so much, Lauren, what a great idea. Also, I just wanted to say that no one HAS to find original blogging themes – let’s be honest, all of the subjects have already been talked about and no one really is original. Your blog posts, tags, reviews and everything always shine because they’re YOU, and I love it 🙂
also, I’m like you when it comes to DNF-ing books, I don’t really do that either ahah 🙂

    1. Thanks so much, Marie! I can’t take complete credit for it though – I’ve been seeing it around a bit recently and decided to jump in with my own.

Yeah, definitely!! I always see discussions on similar topics and I think what makes them really stand out is people’s personalities so that really means a lot to me. Thank you ♥♥

      I’m just so stubborn 😂

  6. I personally don’t like reading e-books because I feel like I’m not making any progress. With physical books I can see my bookmark halfway through the book, but on a Kindle it’s just the same screen. It bothers me 😅

The whole thing with wanting to have different copies of the same book is so weird to me. I’m the opposite of a hoarder, owning too many things makes me really anxious, so having multiple copies of the same thing would drive me nuts 😂

I have a blogging schedule but not in the sense that I write the posts in advance. I just have a document with a list of posts I want to write, and I arrange them according to the order I want to post them in. I often add or remove posts from the list or move things around when I get a new idea, but I love having a general plan for my upcoming posts.

Replying to follow-up comments is something I don’t always do either, mainly because I usually have nothing more to add 😂

Tbh I love your reviews! You always make them personal and really nice to read. I mean reviews are my favourite part of blogging and your blog is my fave so honestly you have nothing to worry about 😜

  7. I do soo many of these too! I thought I was the only one who dog-ears pages even though I do have bookmarks. It’s just easier sometimes when the bookmark is not within reach. I love ebooks too. I also cannot read just one book at a time. It’s always at least three. I don’t want to get multiple copies of books either expect if the edition is really unique. I Soo want the Slytherin edition though 😦

  8. Great Confession Post! 😀
Personally, I’m BIG on keeping my books in absolute flawless and immaculate condition, if one little piece of a page tears or one of my friend’s dares to dog ear my book, a little piece of me totally crumbles.
I’m with ya on DNF, but ever since I started book blogging, I’ve found it somewhat a good idea to stick it through and finish books that I’m suffering through cause that usually makes for great review potential :).
Same here, I’m currently reading 4 different novels. I like reading one chapter and then jumping to the next chapter of another book. I usually hold up to 3 books in my bag when I go out, which, as you can imagine, is pretty darn tough given that I love reading longer novels! eek

  9. I completely agree with all of your book confessions… except I DNFed my first book ever this past year because it was an indie ARC where the grammar was TERRIBLE!! but I also prefer ebooks and couldn’t care less about getting more than 1 copy of a book

  10. I loved reading your confessions Lauren, but oh we’re pretty much the opposite when it comes to the reading ones. With the exception of preferring eBooks over paperbacks I’m pretty much the other way around. I need the paperbacks I own to be in perfect-ish condition, and if it’s a series I love I like owning multiple copies of the same book, I’m not too sure why now I think about it though.
Also I kind of envy you being able to read multiple books at the same time. I always think that would help me read more but I just can’t without getting the stories a little too mixed up in my head!
Great confessions though, it was kind of fun reading them all. 🙂

  11. I’m definitely one of those people who needs their books in pristine condiont, I wish I was more carefree though! I am basically a nightmare to borrow books from, Haha!

I also really agree with you on the multiple copies of the same book thing, to me it’s a little bit of a waste of space and money in my opinion. It’s so funny you brought up the special editions of Harry Potter right now because that is the ONE exception I would make as Well!

I’m also really bad with series, I always start them and rarely finish them. I don’t know why. I like beginnings not ends! Plus I find it a lot easier to review the first book in a series.

I also don’t have a blog schedule and rarely post in advance too. I’m a very sporadic blogger and I post when I have time! I’m a mood reader and the same thing applies to my blogging.

I also let comments go for days or a week before replying I AM ALSO A HUMAN TRASH CAN! I’ve been trying to get better as well!

You are amazing at writing original content and reviews Lauren your blog is awesome! But I definitely feel you because I feel the same way about my own posts that they aren’t original and sometimes trying to do reviews is horrible!

This is also a really fun post idea I may have to do something similar!

Also apparently we have a lot of bad habits in common, yaaaaay! Haha I was laughing throughout this entire post like IT ISN’T JUST ME!!! 😁😂

  12. I loved this post!!! I am a bit opposite for a few, I LOVE when my books are in perfect condition, I try to buy and keep them that way, and I also prefer physical books! I also do no DNF books though! I seriously cannot! Even if the book is HORRIBLE I still need to know what happens!!

  13. I love the way you wrote this! Ha, was that a Linkin Park reference I see 😛
That’s actually a good way to let people know you like their content by liking it without reading. I try to like everything I read, and comment, but sometimes commenting is SO hard, and I’m well, lazy! 😛

  14. I’m the same on SO many of these – especially on books that are “well-loved”. I don’t like to dog-ear them but that’s mostly because I did that when younger and it makes finding your page when re-reading a book a lot harder. I always worry I’m going to “mess up” a pretty new book so much prefer a nice battered copy.

    Liked by 1 person

  15. I dogear my pages all the time and find it so cute how it’s called dog earing. I have bookmarks but I tend to lose them and lets be honest it’s just so much easier to fold that little corner over. I’m so much like you, I don’t have multiple copies of the same book other than Harry Potter. That is my kryptonite. If I get an ARC I won’t get another finished copy when it’s officially out and has a slight change to the cover or something, I mean that’s rare but I don’t have the book space for that type of thing.
Loved this post. Also your posts are so original and I love them. You are equally as good at the discussions you do in comparison to other people who make them up and I always find your tags to be unlike anyone else’s. I’m usually not a tag reader but I love to read yours!

  16. I love this post! I liked all of your confessions; they were fun to read. I share more than a few, like never DNF’ing a book and liking a post when I haven’t read it / skimmed it. I don’t think dog-earing books is a sin or anything but I only do it when there’s a quote I’d like to remember. I’d also really like to read multiple books at once, but the few times I’ve tried I always end up reading the one I like most until it’s finished 😀

    Liked by 1 person

  17. I like reviews without reading them. *Shame faced* I just tend to skip reviews if I’ve read the book or know for a fact I’m not interested in the book. *shrugs*. And I don’t care about books being in new condition either. I love love love used books. And ebooks. They are awesome.

  18. I’m one of those people who goes a bt crazy about their books being in pristine condition *oops* Like, I even make reading difficult because I try really hard not to damage the spine so I force myself to read with the book still being like almost half closed and I realize it’s crazy but okay 😉
Other than that, I relate to pretty much all of your confessions! I usually read multiple books at once as well. At the least one physical copy and one on my kindle so I always have a choice and can cater to my own bookish moods.
I also don’t care about owning multiple copies of a book! I do have a lot of series where pretty much every other book is a different cover or size, and this REALLY annoys me, but also, I can never bring myself to buy a book I already have in a different cover or size just to make them fit nicer together.
And ah, I love your blog and think your posts are super original. Your personality really comes through in every post and that also makes them unique! But I do understand your feelings on this, as I also feel like all bookish discussions have already been done and I have trouble coming up with new things! And I’m a terrible replier to comments. I feel like I always say the same thing over and over again, even though I try to always write thoughtful and relevant replies…

  19. I, too, am terrible with series. I honestly can’t stand them. It takes foreverrrr for the next book to come out that i eventually forget to continue on with the series. It’s a constant battle. And I also can’t schedule posts. Sometimes I feel bad because I get behind on my blog and go MIA because I don’t know what to post. It makes me feel like a bad blogger sometimes. I feel you!

  20. We share a lot of them! I’m not into ebooks because my eyes hurt if I look at a screen for too much… I also tried scheduling posts in advance but I just can’t (?) and I also don’t care about having multiple editions of the same book.
By the way I think your content is very original!

  21. I’m totally guilty of some of your confessions! 😀 I also pay attention to theme when I first visit someone’s blog. I like my eyes to be pleased okay xD I also don’t really care of multiple editions, I prefer using my money to buy a totally new books. And I also have commitment issue with series…. I’m a professional series unfinisher XD

  22. I am actually pretty on board with most of your reading confessions!! 🙌 (Though whyyyy dogearing?? 😫😂)
WOO for ebooks! I like physical books better but for the longest time ebooks were my LIFE and I never really mind reading them. It’s actually super convenient and I also love that I can easily make notes on a certain passage without really breaking the ~flow~ of my reading if that makes sense haha.
Ahem. Commence squealing! LAUREN!! You mustttttt read Crooked Kingdom omg YOU WILL LOVE IT 😂❤️ It will also break your heart so I can *understand* why you’re not picking it up but… It! Must!! Be!! Read!! Someday!! I will not allow you to not read it haha. 😝 Who’s your favourite character?!?
    Love this post! ❤

  23. I have yet to DNF a book too. I’ve wanted to but I’m stubborn and for some strange reason I feel bad about DNFing even though I have no obligation to finish it. At the same time I want to see it through to the end so I can officially just finish and move on to the next.

I’ve been reading more ebooks recently, especially when it comes to contemporary books. I still prefer a physical copy, I find it easier to immerse myself in the physical copy. However, I’ve come to appreciate ebooks a lot more and have even gone as far as to consider getting my own kindle (though I have no idea which one to get). 😛

When it comes to my blogging schedule, I have none. I try to write up my blog posts for the week on Monday so I can spend more time blog hopping, which I am failing at these days.

  24. Happy to know that I’m not the only who is okay with books not being in pristine condition! Series are actually my favorite type of read and I’m always that fangirl who’s anxiously awaiting the next book in the series. 🙂 But I understand where you’re coming from. It’s hard to wait and there have been series that I’ve just not been invested in enough to wait, but those are few and far between.

Most of my DNFs are books where I just didn’t care about the character at all. If I enjoy the character, I’ll suffer thru a bad plot. But there are very few plots that will entice me to keep reading if I don’t care about the characters and what happens to them.

I also wanted to let you know that I recommended you for a Blogger Recognition Award over on my blog. 🙂 The site is: https://valeriesmusings.com/2017/06/27/blogger-recognition-award/
