Music Monday 🎧 OMG THIS SONG BOOK TAG

OMG THIS SONG

This tag looked like so much fun and I figured it’d be great to post for a Music Monday because I get to talk about MUSIC AND BOOKS!! So you guys get the best of both worlds 😎

I saw this tag on Alyssa @ Pucksandpaperbacks channel! You can watch her video here (and follow her blog!). It was created by Kate @ Katesbookdate and you can see her original video here!

MY JAM – a song you MUST listen to every time it comes on, no matter how old or how many times you’ve listened to it / a book you’ll never get sick of

The song part of this was so hard because every time I love a song I’m like THIS IS MY JAM and I can listen to music on repeat for a month and not be sick of it. I’m going with The Divine Zero because it was the first song Pierce The Veil had released in over three years. I was in a class when this was released and I stopped everything and listened. It’s a super important song to me not only because it’s amazing, but because I relate to the lyrics A LOT.

I know the book answer is cliche, but it’s true. I specifically chose Prisoner of Azkaban because it’s my favourite and I will never get sick of it.

THROWBACK – a song that reminds you of the cringiest time of your life / a book that also reminds you of this time (or just something you wouldn’t like as much if you picked it up for the first time now)

See this was hard for me too because this would be the category were most people choose Emo songs or Disney Channel songs, but like I’m still Emo and I was well into my late teens when all the Disney Channel songs were a thing and 18/19 was my favourite years. I went with Dilemma because I was like 12/13 when I listened to this song and they were easily some of the worst years of my life. I don’t even want to think about it.

I was also invested with the Pretty Little Liars book series in my late teens. I binge read the first four books and I refused to watch the TV show because I was so angry at how much they changed. There’s NO WAY I would enjoy these books now though, haha.

REPLAY – a recent song you have on repeat right now / a recent favorite book

Waterparks are the new love of my life. I am in so totally head over heels. They are my current reason for living and breathing. I’m going to go into it more in my Top 5 post at the end of the month though! Anyway, this is the song that made me really fall in love with them.

I read We Are Okay last week and it’s honestly all I’ve been able to think about. It’s a very character driven story and it all takes place in the one place over 3 days, but oh my god. It’s so beautiful and hit so close to home for me.

GETS ME – this song IS ME / this book is me in book form

I don’t know how many people are familiar with a Powerspace because even back in 2007 they were an underrated band in the scene. I loved them though and Right On, Right Now is pretty much the story of my life. I relate to the lyrics so much because it’s all about trying to get through every day whilst dealing with depression. On the first listen it seems like this is a really happy, upbeat song but when you listen to the lyrics you realise it’s not. That’s one of my FAVOURITE things with songs. I think it’s such a great metaphor for people themselves. This is one of the most important songs in my entire life.

It’s kind of hard to choose a book that’s ME because I normally see myself scattered throughout different books. The closest would definitely be Queens of Geek though. Taylor’s anxiety mirrors mine so accurately. Plus I totally get the intense love for a fandom.

WUT – weird but I like it? – a unique book that stuck out to you for whatever reason

My music consists for A LOT of weird songs 😂 I decided to go with something more recent though which is No Friend. I’m sure A LOT of people were probably really thrown by this song, but even when I didn’t originally like this album I LOVED this song. It’s spoken word and I really dig that in music (one of my favourite bands La Dispute uses spoken word a lot). The lyrics are all references to old Paramore songs (WHICH IS ANOTHER THING I LOVE IN MUSIC) and it just sounds really cool.

Would you look at that, I’m talking about Illuminae. This is the book that made me start reading again. If it wasn’t for this book then this blog wouldn’t exist. It is one of the most unique books I’ve ever seen. The mixed media format is so amazing.

As a bonus to this I also want to give a shout out to Night Film by Marisha Pessl which follows a similar format, but it is super psychological and dark. I love it!!!

LET’S GO – best pump up song (for workouts or just life) – a book that inspired you

“Workouts” LMAO but anyway LA Devotee is a song that never fails to make me want to dance around my room. If I’m a bad mood normally playing it will instantly cheer me up. It just has such a good vibe to it. I LOVE IT.

This is more the series than the book but The Raven Cycle inspired me so much. I know there are issues with the series and Maggie, but I’m still such trash for it. This book is the reason why I wanted to get back into design and why I decided to open my RedBubble and Society6 stores. The writing is so beautiful and whimsical. I love it.

CHILL – fav chill, relaxing song / a book you’d curl up with and read on a rainy day

Chill music is not in my vocabulary. It took me SO LONG to try and find something. I decided to go with Waves because I heard it not long ago and it just seems really chill. It’s not normally what I’d listen to, but I really dig this! I suppose I could have chosen anything Ed Sheeran too, but it was too difficult trying to pick.

I’m TERRIBLE at deciding what counts as a “rainy day read” but I’m going to go with We Were Liars. It’s definitely not relaxing, but it’s a super quick read and I think the added atmosphere of a rainy day would make it even more amazing. It’s a polarising book and people either love it or hate it, but I LOVE IT.

ADDICTING – guilty pleasure song – one that’s catchy and addicting but not a whole lot of substance / guilty pleasure/trashy/fast/light read

This is such a cheat because I don’t believe in the term “guilty pleasure”. You shouldn’t feel bad about liking something just because it’s not “deep” or “intellectual”.

Anyway, I chose She’s Kinda Hot because on the surface it would seem like a really cheesy pop song about some girl being kinda hot, but it’s really not??? It’s all about not fitting in and how you shouldn’t be ashamed of being yourself. 5 Seconds of Summer are one of my favourite bands so I’m definitely not embarrassed that I love their music.

The Merciless is another one of my favourite YA horror series, but it could definitely be viewed as trashy since I am complete trash for both books and can’t wait for the third. It’s definitely VERY cliche teen slasher and I LOVE IT. Super addicting!!!!

NOSTALGIA – throwback you look back on fondly / a book you read forever ago that you look back on fondly or reminds you of a happy childhood time

I recently did an entire post dedicated to throwback songs so check that out!!! but I went with Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down because even though it’s not one of the earliest songs I listened to it’s probably the most important? This just takes me back to when I was discovering so many new bands and finally figuring out who I wanted to be and it was just so a fond time. I love this song so much. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it wasn’t for Fall Out Boy.

Again more of a series than an individual book but Goosebumps WAS my childhood. I was so incredibly in love with the books and the TV show. It’s pretty much where my love for horror and all things weird/paranormal stemmed from. Just like Fall Out Boy these books played a huge part in who I am today.

  1. OMG, I was just bloghopping to your blog when you posted a new Music Monday post! So I was already all ‘YAY’ and then it’s a music tag which is so cool and I’ve been thinking about doing lately! And then I’m just loving all these questions and your answers and I’m just thinking to myself “I wanna do this too”. And then I saw that you tagged me, so hey, thank you and THIS WAS SO MEANT TO BE haha 😉
Seriously, I loved this so much and I don’t know what to talk about first! Music? Books? Music? Books? All of it? Ahh!
Let’s start with Waterparks! I love those guys – I just discovered them recently myself but you already made me want to relisten to everything like right now 🙂 (Also, really want to read We Are Okay since you posted those quotes on Twitter because they are GORGEOUS)
I really need to listen to the new Paramore album more. I wasn’t that into it at first, but I think it could be songs that grow on me with more listens.
Totally agree with LA Devotee! It’s such a motivational song and instantly makes me want to dance! It’s hard to listen to it and sit still 🙂
Definitely agree with you about the term “guilty pleasure”! I hate that term, it’s so snobbish! And I loved She’s Kinda Hot by 5SOS! I must admit, I don’t know them that well, but I’ll have to check them out! And The Mercilless sounds like so much fun, I defintely think I’ll read for my next batch of Halloween reads 😉
And I can only nod, nod, nod for FOB and Sugar, We’re Going Down! It’s not exactly a childhood memory for me as I was already in my twenties when I discovered this, but it’s important to me for the same reason as you said: it introduced me to sooo much more music and bands and I’ll always treasure it (a

    1. Ahhh, yayyyyyyy!! It was meant to be 😉

Waterparks are honestly my favourite band at the moment 😀 They’re SOOOO good. I definitely recommend giving their album another listen because there’s so many things I noticed on the 2nd/3rd listen. We Are Okay is so beautiful. It’s very slow paced, but super hard hitting. I hope you enjoy it!

It definitely took me about 5 listens to get into the new Paramore album. I still don’t fully vibe with the sound because it is a bit too poppy for me, but lyrically I love it to pieces and it grows more and more on with every listen.

Right!! The term “guilty pleasure” has ALWAYS bothered me. It’s super pretenious and I feel like it’s mostly made to shame women?? which I’m SO NOT about. Sounds Good Feels Good is a good album to start with if you want to get more into them!

Aaand yes, From Under The Cork Tree is easily one of my favourite albums ever.

  2. OK, sorry, apparently I was typing to excitedly and accidentally pressed enter before I should have *oops*
But seeing as I already typed about a whole book I figure it’s time to round it up anyway 🙂
I was just going to say still that the entire From Under The Cork Tree Album is a treasured album for me that’ll always make me feel nostalgic 🙂

  3. Yes POA was my fave HP book too!!
I actually discovered Fall Out Boy through FictionPress back in the day, the lyrics to Grand Theft Autumn were interwoven in a story. Man I listened to that on repeat and then my next song, once I decided to venture to more was Sugar, We’re Going Down – so many memories!!
I want to read Queens of Geek soon!
Unpopular opinion time – I disliked We Were Liars – I found the characters super spoilt and not in touch. The whole family is so concerned with money that they didn’t notice what was happening with the main character… and the twist was so hyped, and then I was like oh, that all? Guessed that already and dismissed it because I thought it would be a bit more epic. But then as you said, two camps! I did give it three stars for her writing. Have you read the Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks? I read that first before WWL and I enjoyed it so much more! But then I’m partial to boarding schools and the parent trap vibe it had going on 😊

    1. It’s so good 😍 and the movie is my favourite too 😍

Haha, I love that so much!! Grand Theft Autumn is one of my favourites of theirs too.

Ahh, that’s all good. I think I actually know more people who dislike it than like it. I can definitely see what you’re saying. I think I was so swept away with the atmosphere and I lovelovelove unreliable narrators so I was really caught up in that. The writing style is also my fave kind of writing, so that definitely helped haha. I guessed the plot twist, but for some reason it still hit me really hard? I think if I reread it now I might notice some of the flaws more. I haven’t read it, but I think it’s on my TBR!!

  4. OH I love this post so, so much and your answers as well! I agree with you about We Were Liars, reading this on a rainy day would definitely add some kind of atmosphere to the story. And YAY for Goosebumps – I used to love these books so, so much – I want to re read them all again now 🙂

  5. This is so much fun! I may have to do this one at some point.

Also I’m really glad you liked We Are Okay. It’s sitting on my shelf waiting for me to read it, but I feel like I need to emotionally prepare myself beforehand.

    1. Yes, please!!!! Consider yourself tagged 😉

I loved it to pieces. It hit me so hard though, it was kind of hard to read sometimes. It wasn’t necessarily triggering, but man it was like all my jumbled thoughts about grief and life were put into words that made sense and I was like “whoa okay”. I really hope you enjoy it!!

  6. This is such a fun book tag, and it’s so perfect for you, haha! I know how passionate you are about music. I neeeed to get my hands on Queens of Geek; I haven’t heard a single negative thing about it, and I’m so excited to finally get to it. I used to listen to a lot of emo-rock back in high school, but I kind of drifted away from it – but I’ll give these songs a go. 🙂 Great post!

    1. Haha, right!! As soon as I saw it I had to do it.

It’s such a fun and cute read!! It’s pretty simplistic and the writing isn’t perfect, but it manages to talk about so many important issues. I hope you enjoy it!!

Ahh yeah, I never moved on with everyone else 😂😂

  7. This is such a great tag, and I loved reading your answers as well Lauren. 😀 I haven’t read all these books/heard all these songs but the ones I have I definitely agree with. Sugar We’re Goin’ Down is such a throwback song for me, it’s the first Fall Out Boy song I heard and still a favourite of mine to this day. 🙂
Also I am loving Paramore’s new album and Illuminae as well so great pick for that question! 😀 ❤

  8. Hey we have kinda similar tastes in books! We Are Okay and We Were Liars are both some of my favorites. I’m mostly into mystery but those two books are on a level beyond just ‘mystery’, if that even makes sense.

  9. Thank you for tagging me I’m so excited to do this!!!! 😀 I think you’ve turned me into a Waterparks fan, daaaaaamn that song is SO catchy! Like I’ve seen them everywhere & I’m sure they’ve been on warped tour when I’ve been there but I’ve paid no attention to them, they are good!
I have to yet to listen to the whole Paramore album… I really should do that, especially since I got Spotify Premium the other day.
I am obsessed with that Panic! at the Disco album… one of my faves, although nothing will ever beat out a Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, that’s a pure classic! 😀

    1. No worries, I can’t wait to see your post 😀

Hahaha, YESSS. They’re honestly so good and fun!!! I’ve known about them since Warped last year (I think?) but for some reason never listened to them until this month and I’m so mad at myself for not doing it sooner 😂

Oooh yes!!! It took me a while to get into, but now I’m loving it.

A Fever You Can’t Swear Out is actually iconic. Nothing will ever, ever, ever come close to it.

      1. Yeah they’ve been around for some time but I’ve never really given them a listen. My brother keeps saying I’m stuck in the past as I still listen to bands who keep breaking up! UGH! He keeps trying to get me into Neck Deep and Mooseblood, I’m just lazy to listen to them :\

That’s good to hear! I swear I need to put it on a to-do list!

        Suuuuper iconic! 😀

          1. Okay you’ve convinced me to listen to listen to Moose Blood, so I literally just put them on. So far so good.
Really? I feel like I’ve heard about this, but I could be wrong. That makes me want to listen to them less :\

It could have been from me 😂 I mentioned it a bit in my wrap up? But basically on International Women’s Day (I think?) he basically said feminism was just a reason to hate men and then when people called him out he made some trigger jokes :/ Instead of apologising he just deleted everything and acted like it never happened 🙄

              1. Wow what a guy, ugh. I don’t like when people don’t understand feminism and just bash on it because they don’t understand. Actually I hate when anyone does that about anything, it’s like do your research before running you mouth, please and thank you!

P.S. Moose Blood’s album Blush is SO GOOD! I also finally listened to Paramore’s new album, really good and catchy. My next is to listen to a Waterparks album! 🙂

I feel like Pretty Little Liars would be so weird in book form because I’m so used to the show 😅

    1. ahahahaha, that honestly is my shuffle too though 😂 like i mostly listen to the same stuff but when i put itunes on shuffle it’s like anything from metalica to high school musical 😂

I only watched half of season 1, but it was sooooo different I hated it hahahaha
