My Anticipated Reads for the Second Half of 2017 (Part 1)

Most Anticipated Reads

Like always I don’t know how to make decisions and narrow down things so my Anticipated Reads for the second half of the year is going to be split into two separate posts! This post will be dedicated to Thrillers, Horrors and Contemporaries and my next post will be about Fantasies and Sci-Fis. It was actually hard to narrow it down to just this! I have a Goodreads shelf called “not available yet” which has all my anticipated upcoming releases so feel free the browse that!

thrillers

Wreck Bonfire This Darkness Mine

Wreck by Fleur Ferris[July 3] – I loved Black and this just sounds like another really fun thriller. A girl finds her house is ransacked and there’s a mysterious note left behind and some media mogul company is involved?

This Darkness Mine by Mindy McGinnis – [Oct 10] – I’ve heard not great things about Mindy McGinnis’ fantasy book, but I adored The Female of the Species and I think contemporary is her strong point. A girl thinks she’s being possessed by the twin she absorbed in the womb. SIGN ME UP.

Bonfire by Krysten Ritter – [Nov 9] – I ADORE Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones ♥♥♥) and am so weak for thrillers so I am SUPER curious to see how this will be!!!

horrors

Ravenous Hollow Girl Someone

The Ravenous by Amy Lukavics – [Sep 26] – I think this focuses on a group of sisters. One dies and is brought back to life and she has to consume human flesh. Amy has said this ISN’T a zombie story, but cannibalism sooo. Daughters Unto Devils is one of the few horrors that has actually scared me so I’m looking forward to seeing what Amy comes up with in this!!

The Hollow Girl by Hillary Monahan – [Oct 10] – The main character and her friend are in a clan of Welsh Romanies and get brutally assaulted and she wants to do a spell to bring her friend back from death’s door and the spell needs things like human body parts so she goes after the boys that were the attackers. Hell yes.

There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins [Sep 26] – I HAVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR THIS BOOK. I NEED IT NOW. I’ve really wanted to read Stephanie Perkins, but I have no interest in the Anna and the French Kiss series. Then I was gifted a beautiful gift because it’s like Stephanie Perkins looked inside my brain and took all my favourite thing and wrote them into a book. Basically, one by one students at this school are being murdered. I can’t wait.

contemporaries

Mirror Unfinished Wind Conquer Nowhere Die

Mirror, Mirror by Cara Delevingne – [Oct 5] – Even though I’m not into fashion I’ve followed Cara’s career for a while now. I’m just really curious to see how this will be? It sounds like a dark, coming of age so fingers crossed.

The Gallery of Unfinished Girls by Lauren Karcz – [Jul 25] – I’m not even sure how to describe this? It sounds super intriguing though and has hints of magical realism. This book also features a latinx queer MC.

All the Wind in the World by Samantha Mabry – [Oct 10] – I loved Samantha Mabry’s debut A Fierce and Subtle Poison so I can’t wait to see what she comes up with this! It’s about a group of kids who start new after an accident and end up on a (potentially cursed) ranch. There’s secrets ect. I think there might be a hint of magical realism.

Kat and Meg Conquer the World by Anna Priemaza – [Nov 7] – This is about 2 girls (one has anxiety and the other has ADHD) who are forced to work together and discover they have a shared love for an online gamer. It seems like it’s going to be about friendship and mental health!

The Nowhere Girls by Amy Reed – [Oct 10] – One of my most anticipated reads for the second half of the year!! This is a look at rape culture and misogynistic behaviour and is about a group of girls who get revenge for the rape of one of their classmates.

They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera – [Sep 5] – Adam Silvera has become one of my favourite authors and the concept for this has me SO EXCITED. It’s all about two boys who meet each other on the day they’re going to die. I can already tell I’m going to cry because Adam Silvera loves to break my heart.

  2. So many gems to keep an eye out for Lauren! I was standing a few feet away from Kristen Ritter this weekend at Bookcon & I’m counting it as meeting her LMAO! This Darkness Mine intrigues me but I’m weary since all I have to go by with this author is THAT fantasy book lol. I def plan on reading Female of the Species though. My heart isn’t ready for Adam but I am a masochist for his books & so I have a good long cry to look forward to. The Nowhere Girls is def on my radar & will def pick up on release date. Can’t wait to see what your part 2 looks like 😉

    1. Ahhhhh, that would have been amazing. I would have legit just been staring at her with massive heart eyes haha. Yours and Kourtni’s reviews made me decide I don’t want to pick it up, but I feel like TFotS is so much better. Looking forward to seeing what you think of it 😀

  3. The Gallery of Unfinished Girls is on my TBR as well, it sounds VERY intriguing, basically the synopsis made me too curious NOT to think about reading it ahah 🙂
They Both Die at the end is on my TBR just as well…. I will read it eventually since I feel like all of Silvera’s books are so filled with emotions that I need about ten months to get over it ahahah. 🙂

  4. Looking forward to Krysten Ritter’s book as well. Should be great. and Kat and Meg Conquer the world is already on my TBR. I’m also looking forward to Rhett and Link’s book that comes out in October. I can’t wait to read it.

  5. I always love when you do up these posts Lauren because I ALWAYS find books to add, especially horror books! You don’t know how awesome it is for me to have a fellow horror lover finding all these upcoming horror books. Thank you!
I knew about the other 2 but hadn’t even heard of The Hollow Girl and it sounds amazing I am definitely going over to Goodreads to add it now!
I also think The Gallery of Unfinished Girls and the Nowhere Girls both sound really interesting too. Plus who couldn’t use more diverse reads?
    😁

    1. Aww, yay!!! Thank you so much, Heather 😀 I’m always happy to bring horror/thrillers to people’s attention! I noticed it’s a genre that doesn’t really get spoken about a lot so I always try to push it every chance I get 😂

Yes exactly!! I’m so excited for all of them!!

  6. I should probably create a Goodreads shelf for books not yet released because it may help me keep a track of what I want to read better!
Either way a few of the contemporaries are on my to-read list as well (not so much the horror or thriller released because they’re not my thing, but I hope you love them Lauren). All the Wind in the World sounds great, and after Samantha Mabry’s first book I can’t wait for this one, same with They Both Die in the End. I know Adam Silvera’s book will kill me but I still can’t wait for its release! 😀

    1. It’s definitely a good way to keep track! It can be bad too though because I have books on there that aren’t going to be released until 2018.

Thanks so much, Beth 😀 I’m super excited for all of them!! I can’t wait for Adam Silvera to break my heart for the third time 😂

  7. I’m already so excited for This Darkness Mine and There’s Someone Inside Your House. I may also have to add All the Wind in the World to my TBR. It sounds really interesting!

    Great list!

  8. I can’t say I read a lot of thrillers but Bonfire looks intriguing. I hadn’t heard of The Nowhere Girls until you mentioned it and I’m all for a book that tackles rape culture and misogynistic behaviour. Adam Silvera ❤ I already know this book will crush my heart but it'll be worth it.

    1. From the synopsis it seems like it’s going to be a bit more slow burning so it might be a good one to try out 😀 I can not wait for The Nowhere Girls. I’m hoping it’s as good/important as it sounds. And yesss. Can’t wait for my heart to be broken for the 3rd time 😂

  9. That cover for This Darkness Mine, though. I feel like I need to read it just because of the cover.
They Both Die at the End, The Nowhere Girls, and There’s Someone Inside You House made my list as well. I haven’t heard of all of these though, so I guess I need to go check them out.

  10. I loved Mindy’s Female of the Species, so I am so excited for This Darkness Mine as well! And Stephanie Perkins writing a murder mystery does sound intriguing too. xD Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous post! ❤

  11. I don’t read that much thrillers or horrors (though I really should), but I’m SUPER intrigued both by Bonfire and There’s Someone Inside Your House! 🙂 And Adam Silvera is pretty much an auto-buy author for me now because I absolutely adored his previous two books. So They Both Die At The End is a must-read, even though I already suspect I’ll be an emotional wreck by the end.

    1. Yes you definitely should 😉 haha! Bonfire sounds more like a slower paced thriller so maybe that’d be a good place to start? And I’ve heard TSIYH is still reasonably lighthearted so that could be another good one to start with!

Yes, same!!!! I’m so ready for my heart to be broken for the third time 😂

  12. This is such a great round-up, Lauren! I’ve recently started falling in love with thrillers, so I’ll definitely be looking some of these up, especially Bonfire. I’ve also wanted to get into horror more – I’ll look those up too. Do you have any horror recs? I’ve been meaning to pick up It by Stephen King before the movie comes out. 😀

    1. Thanks so much Aimal!! Yay, that’s so awesome 😀 I’ve actually only read one Stephen King book which was Carrie. I’m kinda terrified of clowns so I’ve been avoiding IT 😂 Some of my favourites are YOU by Caroline Kepnes and Night Film by Marisha Pessl (they’re technically more thrillers than horrors, but are pretty messed up). Bird Box and A House at the Bottom of the Lake by Josh Malerman which are super unsettling. I also love Daughters Unto Devils, The Merciless and The Girl from The Well – they’re all YA, but are still dark!

      1. Ooooh thanks for all the recs, Lauren! I’ve read Night Film and I own You, so it seems like I’ll be getting to that super soon. I’d recommend a thriller called “Everything You Want Me to Be” by Mindy Mejia. Super fast-paced and dark; you might like it.

And I FEEL YOU about the clowns. I used to be terrified, but last year when clowns started popping up on streets in the US, it served as exposure therapy and my fear sort of dwindled away. xD

        1. No worries! I hope you enjoy them ♥ That one is on my TBR! I’m super excited to get to it 😀 I’m definitely trying to read more thrillers this year because I feel like I’ve neglected it a lot.

Oh my god, that was so horrifying 😂 They even made it to my town in the middle of nowhere??? I’m so glad I never saw any haha. I’m glad it helped you though!!

  13. So much goodness on this list. Wreck is new to me but I love the sound of it, and I want There’s Someone in the House (YA slasher book? Yay!) Also, I didn’t know Cara Delavinge had a book coming out. Interesting…

    Thanks for the list!

    1. Thanks! I’m super excited for There’s Someone Inside Your House. I’m also really interested to see how Cara’s book is going to be. I feel like it could be great or really bad, haha. Fingers crossed for the first option though.

  14. I am so scared of Steph Perkins book but excited to XD I’m making sure I dont request it from anywhere because I think I may hate it… oops I just don’t know how well my horror loving brain will deal with YA horror but I so so hope I love it to bits.

I haven’t read a Silvera book yet but they both die at the end sounds awesomely heartbreaking and fun + the cover is stunning! Double excited for Wreak as well I’m bummed I can’t make it to the Melbs Launch but I know it’s going to be awesome 😀

    1. Haha, awww!! That’s understandable though!!. YA horror is my favourite 🙈 I know it’s a lot more cliche and not as dark as Adult Fiction horror, but I just have such a soft spot for it. I hope you end up loving it!!!

It’s been six months since I read More Happy Than Not and I still haven’t recovered 💔😂 I can’t wait to get my hands on Wreck 😀 Sorry you can’t make the launch though 😦

      Liked by 1 person

      1. The launch is a bit too far like an hour and a half drive and I dont drive so X’D
I just havent read that much YA horror?! I have a few I recently added to the tbr but I’m always like hmm will it be dark enough I dont know it’s just a genre I dont want to hate on so I’ve stayed away.
So many people love his work I’m excited to read 😀

        1. I don’t drive either so I feel you 😂

Ooh yeah, that’s definitely understandable!! It’s the same reason why I don’t read straight up YA romance because it’s just not something I gel with. If you were going to try tho I think Daughters Unto Devils would be a good one? It’s a very subtle horror, but it is pretty dark and there’s some gore-y scenes in there. Same as The Merciless – that one is a lot more teen horror movie, but there’s some pretty gross stuff happening haha.

  15. Just the list I needed! Been out of the loop for too long!
I didn’t know that Cara Delevingne was writing a book. She’s dabbled in almost all forms of art now. That girl’s talented! Same goes with Krysten Ritter too. I’ll keeping an eye on both books.
I’ll be eagerly awaiting Part 2, since SF/F novels is more up my alley 🙂

  16. All the Wind in the World sounds kinda interesting! Also The Nowhere Girls sounds perfect for me. And I had heard about They Both Die At The End but thought it was just another contemporary – it actually sounds really good.

  17. Yes to all of these! This Darkness Mine and They Both Die At The End are two of my most anticipated books as well. 🙂 Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous post! ❤
