Books I’ve Loved Lately but Haven’t Reviewed

I never know how to write them or get my thoughts out coherently. I normally only write reviews for books that I’ve recieved from publishers or Netgalley. It’s even harder when I loved the book because all I want to do is scream about how good it is. I wish I could be one of those people who break everything down, but that’s not me. So!!!!!!

Anyway, because of my review tendencies there are a BUNCH of books that I’ve really, really enjoyed but haven’t reviewed on here. I have spoken briefly about them in wrap up posts, but I decided to give them an extra shout out! Obviously, all of these books received 500/5 stars.

   

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo – Yep. I’m fully on this bandwagon. At first I didn’t think I was going to love this as much as everyone else because I struggle with High Fantasy a lot, but then there was a scene were everyone was talking about their ghosts? AND FROM THAT MOMENT I WAS SOLD. I love these kids SO MUCH especially Inej and Nina. I did struggle with the world building, but that’s on me because my head just can’t comprehend it. Maybe I would have understood things a bit better if I’d read The Grisha Trilogy first, but this did work fine as a standalone. I promise I’ll read Crooked Kingdom soon even though I’m TERRIFIED.

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi – I WANT EVERYONE IN THE WORLD TO READ THIS BOOK. I read this for the first ever #Diverseathon and I was so so so glad I did. It was beautiful, heartbreaking and so incredibly eye opening. It follows two sister’s from Ghana who go on two incredibly different life journeys. It’s so honest and raw and everyone needs to read it. Okay. Bye.

The First Third by Will Kostakis – Everything a contemporary should be, imo.  This has one of the best familiar relationships EVER. It focuses on Greek culture and it’s so good. There’s romance, but it doesn’t become the central plot of the story and it’s not like nothing else matters once the main character meets the love interest. The best way I can describe Will Kostakis is that he’s like an Australian Adam Silvera. His books will make you laugh, but they will also make you want to lay down on the floor, cry and never get up. I don’t know how easy this is to get hold of outside Austrailia, but his other book The Sidekicks which I LOVED (and reviewed here) is being released in the US soon!! You can pre-order it here. Honestly, do it.

The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis – I read this like 2 days before 2016 ended and I’m so glad I didn’t write my “Fave Books of the Year” post because this made it on there. It’s such an amazing and important take on rape culture, especially among teenagers. It really showcases just how much boys can get away with because of society’s “boys will be boys” stance. Not to mention, Alex is one of the most interesting main characters EVER. She is truly complex and morally ambiguous. The side characters are all really well fleshed out too. Obviously, there are trigger warnings for rape and violence in this so keep that in mind!

  

The Hammer of Thor by Rick Riordan – If Rick Riordan writes a book about myth or in the Percy Jackson world then chances are I’m going to love it to pieces. I didn’t love The Sword of Summer quite as much as his other books and gave it 4 stars, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that The Hammer of Thor cemented itself back up to 5 stars. There was a new character introduced in this book. Their name is Alex and they’re a genderfluid character. I love them so much. Magnus and Samirah really came into their own in this book ESPECIALLY Magnus. He didn’t feel like a slightly altered version of Percy anymore. The Norse mythologies were so interesting and I can’t wait for the next book!!!

A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab – I pretty much cried for the majority of this book??? Especially during the last 30%. SO MUCH HAPPENED THAT BROKE MY HEART, but it was also the PERFECT ending. I honestly couldn’t imagine this series ending any differently. Well, unless a certain thing happened that I can’t talk about because SPOILERS. I just want to talk about Holland for the rest of my life. I can’t remember the last time I felt so fiercely for a character. I JUST WANT HIM TO BE HAPPY YOU GUYS. I love how much Kell, Lila and Rhy (especially) developed in this book. I love all the relationships and dynamics so much. And of course Kell and Alucard’s fighting was EVERYTHING. I’m still not really ready to leave this world.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak – A book that I’d been putting off forever because I was intimidated by its size and the fact that it’s a historical fiction. My sister and literally everyone ever was nagging me endlessly to read this AND I’M SO GLAD I FINALLY DID EVEN IF I DID SPEND LIKE 2 DAYS CRYING. If anyone was in a familiar position to me then: READ THIS BOOK OKAY. The writing style was SO different than what I was expecting. It was narrated by death (which I did know and was interested about) but I wasn’t expecting it to be as poetic as I was? I hate this book because it hurt so much, but not really because I loved it.
