Books I’ve Loved Lately but Haven’t Reviewed

Books I Loved But Haven't Reviewed

[Jean Ralphio voice] Reviews are literally the woooOOOOrst.

Untitled-3

I never know how to write them or get my thoughts out coherently. I normally only write reviews for books that I’ve recieved from publishers or Netgalley. It’s even harder when I loved the book because all I want to do is scream about how good it is. I wish I could be one of those people who break everything down, but that’s not me. So!!!!!!

Anyway, because of my review tendencies there are a BUNCH of books that I’ve really, really enjoyed but haven’t reviewed on here. I have spoken briefly about them in wrap up posts, but I decided to give them an extra shout out! Obviously, all of these books received 500/5 stars.

Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1) Homegoing The First Third The Female of the Species

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo – Yep. I’m fully on this bandwagon. At first I didn’t think I was going to love this as much as everyone else because I struggle with High Fantasy a lot, but then there was a scene were everyone was talking about their ghosts? AND FROM THAT MOMENT I WAS SOLD. I love these kids SO MUCH especially Inej and Nina. I did struggle with the world building, but that’s on me because my head just can’t comprehend it. Maybe I would have understood things a bit better if I’d read The Grisha Trilogy first, but this did work fine as a standalone. I promise I’ll read Crooked Kingdom soon even though I’m TERRIFIED.

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi – I WANT EVERYONE IN THE WORLD TO READ THIS BOOK. I read this for the first ever #Diverseathon and I was so so so glad I did. It was beautiful, heartbreaking and so incredibly eye opening. It follows two sister’s from Ghana who go on two incredibly different life journeys. It’s so honest and raw and everyone needs to read it. Okay. Bye.

The First Third by Will Kostakis – Everything a contemporary should be, imo.  This has one of the best familiar relationships EVER. It focuses on Greek culture and it’s so good. There’s romance, but it doesn’t become the central plot of the story and it’s not like nothing else matters once the main character meets the love interest. The best way I can describe Will Kostakis is that he’s like an Australian Adam Silvera. His books will make you laugh, but they will also make you want to lay down on the floor, cry and never get up. I don’t know how easy this is to get hold of outside Austrailia, but his other book The Sidekicks which I LOVED (and reviewed here) is being released in the US soon!! You can pre-order it here. Honestly, do it.

The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis – I read this like 2 days before 2016 ended and I’m so glad I didn’t write my “Fave Books of the Year” post because this made it on there. It’s such an amazing and important take on rape culture, especially among teenagers. It really showcases just how much boys can get away with because of society’s “boys will be boys” stance. Not to mention, Alex is one of the most interesting main characters EVER. She is truly complex and morally ambiguous. The side characters are all really well fleshed out too. Obviously, there are trigger warnings for rape and violence in this so keep that in mind!

Magnus Chase and the Hammer of Thor A Conjuring of Light (Shades of Magic, #3) The Book Thief

The Hammer of Thor by Rick Riordan – If Rick Riordan writes a book about myth or in the Percy Jackson world then chances are I’m going to love it to pieces. I didn’t love The Sword of Summer quite as much as his other books and gave it 4 stars, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that The Hammer of Thor cemented itself back up to 5 stars. There was a new character introduced in this book. Their name is Alex and they’re a genderfluid character. I love them so much. Magnus and Samirah really came into their own in this book ESPECIALLY Magnus. He didn’t feel like a slightly altered version of Percy anymore. The Norse mythologies were so interesting and I can’t wait for the next book!!!

A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab – I pretty much cried for the majority of this book??? Especially during the last 30%. SO MUCH HAPPENED THAT BROKE MY HEART, but it was also the PERFECT ending. I honestly couldn’t imagine this series ending any differently. Well, unless a certain thing happened that I can’t talk about because SPOILERS. I just want to talk about Holland for the rest of my life. I can’t remember the last time I felt so fiercely for a character. I JUST WANT HIM TO BE HAPPY YOU GUYS. I love how much Kell, Lila and Rhy (especially) developed in this book. I love all the relationships and dynamics so much. And of course Kell and Alucard’s fighting was EVERYTHING. I’m still not really ready to leave this world.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak – A book that I’d been putting off forever because I was intimidated by its size and the fact that it’s a historical fiction. My sister and literally everyone ever was nagging me endlessly to read this AND I’M SO GLAD I FINALLY DID EVEN IF I DID SPEND LIKE 2 DAYS CRYING. If anyone was in a familiar position to me then: READ THIS BOOK OKAY. The writing style was SO different than what I was expecting. It was narrated by death (which I did know and was interested about) but I wasn’t expecting it to be as poetic as I was? I hate this book because it hurt so much, but not really because I loved it.

  1. This is such a great post idea Lauren because I don’t really like doing reviews all that much especially for books I REALLY enjoy! It’s just too hard to write reviews when all I want to do is scream “I REALLY LOVED THIS BOOK!”. I may have to do something similar to this for all of those books!
Glad you loved Six of Crows! I know I was kind of skeptical at first with that one since I didn’t like “Shadow and Bone” but it’s so, so good! 🙂

  2. I’m currently on around page 58 of Conjuring of Light and I’ve already cried quite a bit. V.E.Schwab’s writing is so magical, you feel as if you are in the worlds she creates, adventuring alongside Kell, Lila, and Rhy. I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 🙂

  5. I’m so glad you loved Six of Crows! I still need to move onto Crooked Kingdom but i’m holding onto the experience as long as possible. I just loved this band of misfits so much and found them so entertaining!

  6. I read Homegoing a few months ago and really loved it. I was impressed with how well Gyasi was able to connect the different stories and was surprised/impressed by how many different topics she was able to incorporate. I can’t wait to see what else she writes in the future. The only other one of these I’ve read is The Book Thief, but I really want to reread it because it was a looong time ago. Pretty much all the rest are on my TBR so I’m glad to see you loved them so much!!

  7. I have THE Book Thief sitting on my shelf RIGHT NOW! I’m just waiting for some time when i can give it the undivided attention that it deserves.

Also, the idea behind this post is so relatable because there are so many book that I’ve read and loved recently but just haven’t had the time to review.😭

  8. THE FIRST THIRD! I get the warm feels every time someone mentioned that book bc damnnnn it’s sooo underrated. I loved the characters, loved the theme, loved the writing style. I haven’t picked up The Sidekicks yet but I’m pretty sure I’ll love it if The First Third is any indication. ❤

Also ACOL damn near killed me. That ending was indeed the most perfect ending I could imagine for the characters, which is saying a lot. Holland, though – my heart breaks for him in so many places, so many times throughout the book.

  9. I try and stay on top of my reviews, simply because if I don’t I’ll be in the same boat and just way behind on them. Also I seem to be on track at the moment when it comes to my reading schedule and my posting reviews schedule which makes it easier. 🙂
I am so so so glad to see you loved these books, some of these are favourites of mine (Six of Crows, ACOL and The Book Thief) so I’d love to see your reviews if you’re planning on writing them still! 😀

  10. THE BOOK THIEF. AHHHH. THAT WAS THE FIRST BOOK THAT ACTUALLY MADE ME CRY (at least one drop slipped from my eyes) 😭 AND WRITING REVIEWS IS THE BANE OF MY EXISTENCE. 🙈

  11. Getting those reviews out there is no easy feat especially when you’re on a streak of just enjoying all of the books. I totally get the need to scream IT WAS JUST SOOOO GOOD, READ IT! haha! Since I’ve been catching up with ARCS, that’s all I’ve been doing is writing reviews lol. When I read from my personal library though, I don’t review everything. Female of the Species & Homegoing are at the very top of my list. I read Crooked Kingdom earlier this year & GAHHHHHH! I miss them so much *sobs* lol 😉

  12. SIX OF CROWS! I all of a sudden have the urge to re-read it… Haha. So glad you enjoyed this one and I hope you’ll equally love Crooked KIngdom.
And ACOL! Ah, I’m not over this world or characters yet either. And Holland forever owns my heart as one of my favorite characters ever. And in a book full of super lovable characters, that’s saying something 🙂
The Book Thief is one of my all-time faves so I’m happy to hear you loved it as well 🙂 I’m with you on the hating it because it hurt, but loving it anyway 😉
I need to read Homegoing and soon!
And continue my Rick Riordan reading beyond Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Seriously, why haven’t I done this yet? 😉

  14. Yiiiiss I’m so pumped to get my hands on Homegoing!
I agree 100%, The Hammer of Thor was brilliant. So much better than the first book. I’m reviewing it soon and I’m excited!!

  15. I feel you on reviewing. I can read so much more, and I’m never particularly motivated to reviewing after. I feel like my reviews aren’t always the best, but at the same time I want to share the books I loved.

  16. I feel ya, Lauren. I am SO bad at reviewing (and blogging in general at the moment) – I get so carried away with reading and then don’t write any notes and OMG it’s so hard to review a book you love. Much, much harder than a book you didn’t like because you can be objective and critical! I really, really want to read The Female of the Species but for some reason it isn’t available to buy on my Kindle. 😦 Definitely going to have to hunt it down on Book Depository or something, especially after all the great reviews I’ve seen (including yours). Hope you’re good anyway, it’s been a while!<3 x

    1. Right!! I’ve tried to write notes SO. MANY. TIMES. but it just never works out 😂???

TFotS is INCREDIBLE. I hope you’re able to get your hands on a copy soon!!!

Yes, I miss you!! It’s definitely understandable though because I know how hectic life can be. I’ve had some ups and downs, but still trudging along so 💪🏻 Hope everything’s going good for you ♥
