one day i met a guy
who stole my heart,
we created a world
for ourselves.
and another day
he broke my heart
and shattered
my soul.

i took the tattered
pieces of this
broken soul and
became anew.

– here lies the hurting, the healing, and the learning

I find it hard to review poetry so this is basically just a little appreciation post because I’m so excited for Gretchen.

I’m sure you’re all aware that our very own Gretchen @ Chic Nerd Reads has been working on her debut poetry collection. It was published a few days ago and naturally I bought and read it straight away.

I remember when Gretchen announced that she was working on this book and now it’s out in the world and I am so proud of her ♥ Anyone who knows her has seen how hard she’s worked and whenever she tweets about her Amazon rankings I get SO HAPPY because she deserves all the success and recognition. Please go support her if you can!

I spent a good portion of this collection crying because all these poems hit me in the best way possible. I’m so thankful for Gretchen sharing her story of love, heartbreak and healing because it made me feel less alone in mine.

I’m going to get a bit personal here, so bear with me. When I was 18 I was in love with a boy and thus begun 3 years of a ‘relationship’ – if you can even call it that – that was incredibly emotionally abusive. Every time he fucked up I would go back. I knew the cycle off by heart, but every time he said “I’m sorry” I would just clean the slate and forget everything. I thought he was the one, I thought I could change him ect. ect. He would only want me when he was drunk or needed an ego boost. Still, I would have done anything for him and he knew it and used it to his advantage.  If I had read these poems back then I feel like I could have really found the strength to break free. They definitely would have made me feel less alone, anyway.

Current me and 18 year old me are so glad this collection exists. I know there’s so many people out there who have been or who are in a similar situation. I hope they read these words and realise their worth.

If you enjoyed the princess saves herself in this one by Amanda Lovelace or milk and honey by Rupi Kaur then you’re going to love Gretchen’s collection just as much. She has such a beautiful way with words. Even the poems I didn’t connect to personally still really hit me.

Here’s some of my favourites from the collection:

love, and you is a story about hurting but finding strength within yourself, that you’ve always had, to start healing again. It shows that you’ve always been more than the person who hurt you. I can’t recommend it enough.

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I hope you’re all having a fantastic day.

  1. Lauren I am at work with tears in my eyes, hiding my face so my coworkers won’t see my face full of emotions. I am so happy that you resonated with this book. I’m sorry that you had to go through what you went through but I’m even happier that you let go of that toxicity and you’re here now ❤

Thank you for sharing. Thank you for loving. Thank you for supporting me. Thank you for being my friend.

I wish I could hug you so I'm sending you all the love from NYC to Australia!

  2. OMGOSH! You read it Lauren! Just seeing snippets of her book being quoted gets me so emotional, I’m so glad to see that you connected with it. I also saw a younger me & also a not so younger me in these poems. It’s amazing how words can transcend, connect, and heal so many. Wonderful review, thank you for sharing your experience 😉

  3. Oh my god I completely forgot this was being released. The second I get paid I’m definitely going to have to order this off Amazon (and maybe buy Milk and Honey and The Princess Saves Herself In This One as well). I’ve been meaning to start reading poetry books and obviously Gretchen’s book would be a great place to start off.
Great review Lauren. I’m so glad you enjoyed this book, and the poems you posted are lovely as well! 😀

    1. Ahh, that’s okay ♥♥ I’m terrible with remembering some releases too, haha. I definitely recommend you do that though 😀 Those 3 are a wonderful place to start and compliment each other so well. Super quick reads too and great for in between other books! Thanks so much, Beth!!

      1. I normally wait until I start seeing reviews and then I realise it’s been released and actually get around to buying/reading it.
I’ve added them to my Amazon cart so as soon as I get paid I’ll be able to click the ‘buy’ button for all three!
        That’s all right. 🙂

  4. I still need to read this! It’s sat next to my bed waiting patiently, i’m going to try tonight!
Its so nice to hear that you were so touched by her poetry, I’m sorry you went through that relationship at 18. Whilst I wish we didn’t have to go through hard moments in our life, they make us stronger. You an amazing person Lauren and what he put you through isn’t right. I’m so glad you got out of that situation safely.

  6. Not my kind of poetry personally, but I’m really happy she is so successful and that you felt such a connection to the poems. 😃

  7. I don’t read that much petry, though I always want to. Both Milk and Honey and The Princess Saves Herself In This One are still on my TBR. But I’m now also adding Love, And You because those excerpts are gorgeous ❤
