The 10 Longest Books on my TBR

longestbrbbooks.png

I’m one of those people that get terrified by page numbers. I consider anything over 400 pages extremely intimidating. The fact that the longest book I’ve read is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix pretty much says everything you need to know. I know a lot of people aren’t affected by this and I envy you, but it’s not something I’m ever going to be look over. Reading on my Kindle does help because I don’t have to physically see the book, but it’s still at the back of my mind. I’ll never be able to “just ignore it”. That said, I am slowly getting better at reading big books and I try not to let a page number deter me if I find the plot interesting.

So, here are 10 of the longest books that are currently on my TBR!

sep

Les Misérables Under the Dome Seveneves 112263

Les Misérables by Victor Hugo || 1,463 PAGES – Okay, so I’m not sure if I’ll ever read this, but I want to try! I went through a phase were I was obsessed with the Les Mis movie or well I was obsessed with Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Barks so I was like I HAVE TO READ THE BOOK!!!!! Then I realised how big it was and I was like …okay, maybz later. I did try like 5 times back in the day, but just couldn’t stick with it.

Under the Dome by Stephen King || 1,074PAGES – There’s so many Stephen King books on my TBR and I want to read them ALL, but they just look so big and so dense it SCARES ME. I went through a phase were I was in love with Britt Robertson so I kinda obsessed over the show for a while, but then I just stopped watching??? I find the concept really interesting though.

Seveneves by Neal Stephenson || 867 PAGES – I saw this on a YouTube video and thought it sounded really interesting! It’s like a sci-fi with an apocalypse and space stuff. I don’t know too much about it, honestly. BUT SPACE!!!!

11/22/63 by Stephen King || 866 PAGES Not surprisingly, there’s another Stephen King book on here. I added this to my TBR for several reasons. One of them actually being that one of my favourite celebrities (don’t judge me!!!) Ashley Tisdale was reading it and said how much she loved it. Also, I love the concept of alternate history.

  1. A Game of Thrones The Passage Alexander Hamilton

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin || 835PAGES – So….. I don’t know if I’ll ever read this book 😂 High fantasies intimidate me all on there own no matter what the page count so. I also just don’t really care about Game of Thrones anymore? Which is the reason why I added this to my TBR. I stopped watching in like season 4? I dunno.

The Passage by Justin Cronin || 766 PAGES – When I added this to my TBR I had NO IDEA that it was about vampires?????? I remember thinking the summary on Goodreads sounded really interesting. I love the A Bunch of Strangers are Connected trope. Then like way later down the track I saw that it was about vampires and I was like WAIT WHAT. Anyway, I picked up a copy of this at a library sale so hopefully I’ll read it soon. Maybe. Who knows.

Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow || 731 PAGES – Yes this on my TBR because I’m Hamilton trash. Lin-Manuel Miranda used this book as the basis to the musical so naturally I need to read it. That said, I know NOTHING about US history. When I was at school all we learnt about was a very Euro-centric history of Australia. Hamilton made me want to learn more and that’s one of the reasons why I loved it so much.

A Little Life NOS4A2 House of Leaves

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara || 720 PAGES – I’m pretty sure you’ve heard of this book. Everyone says that it’s extremely devastating and that makes me want to read it even more, but IT’S SO BIG. I do wanna read it at some point though.

NOS4A2 by Joe Hill || 720 PAGES – Well, it’s not Stephen King but it’s his son. So. I’ve heard good things about this and I really want to read Joe Hill because I did enjoy what I read of Heart Shaped Box before I had to put it on hold. I don’t really know what it’s about? But everyone says it’s creepy so I’m sold.

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski || 686 PAGES This is one that I’m actually SO EXCITED about reading. I FINALLY have a physical copy and whilst it is intimidating I also can’t wait to get started with it. Everyone says this really messed with their heads and I hope it has the same affect on me. This book is also kind of mixed media with heaps of different weird formatting.

  1. Wow, that’s a lot of Stephen King! (He sure does like to write long books!) I’ve heard A Little Life is supposed to be really good, and my friend has been suggesting I read House of Leaves for years. I think some of the longest on my current TBR are A Conjuring of Light, Outlander, The Black Prism and The Wise Man’s Fear. Great post Lauren!

          1. I am actually in love with it so far. I was expecting it to be good, but it’s just SO GOOD??? I have the second book out from the library, so I might just go straight into it if the ending is a cliffhanger! Haha, I wouldn’t worry – it takes me ages to finished series a lot of the time. I still haven’t read City of Heavenly Fire and I started City of Bones about 6 years ago XD

  2. No surprise Stephen King is on here 😛 And I’m interested in reading A Little Life but large books intimidate me a lot!!

  3. I don’t know if this helps (or if you’ve tried this before and it didn’t work) but something that helps me with long books is splitting them up into chunks. If the book is 700 pages, decide to read 20 pages of it a day. That way you’re not burning yourself out, but you’re still making progress. This is what I did for Infinite Jest (which is a beast at over 1,000 pages) but I even use it for smaller books (especially classics, which always take me longer to read and give me more stress).

Also: I’ve read the Game of Thrones series, and it goes by faster than you think. It’s a plot-driven series, but the individual books are very character-heavy, which keeps me interested.

  4. I think big books tend to indimidate me just as well, I was so nervous to read Winter -the last book in The Lunar Chronicles series- because it was MASSIVE…but I ended up reading it so quickly because it was fast-paced and I was addicted ahah 🙂 I hope you’ll read and enjoy all of these, Lauren 🙂

  5. Both Stephen King books are great, although my absolute favourite Stephen King book is 11/22/63 it is SO GOOD! I really should re-read it!
This Little Life is super sad and it is emotionally draining (just an fyi) but that doesn’t mean it isn’t good, it’s got excellent writing and overall, a beautifully sad story.
I hope you do get to reading some of your big books! 🙂

    1. Ooh, I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it 😀 I’ll definitely have to try and read it soon.

I love emotionally draining books. They’re honestly my favourite so I should definitely attempt to read that one soon too. I just see how big it is and freak out 😂

  6. It’s interesting that you find long books less intimidating on your Kindle! I personally hate reading e-books because I can’t see the progress in the actual, physical book, and that makes me feel like the book is longer than it actually is! So pretty much the opposite haha. 😅
I just finished watching the TV show Under the Dome, which is actually based on the novel, so I want to read it too now! 😃
I’m torn on whether I want to read A Little Life or not … I think one day I will spontaneously buy it and then the book will decide for me. 😂

    1. Haha!! I love how opposite we are. I’d much prefer to read an ebook than a physical book. Before I started blogging I couldn’t remember the last time I read a physical book, but I’m slowly getting better at reading them again 😂

I started watching that, but then like everything else in my life, I just kinda stopped? I’ve heard good things though!!

      1. I love physical books, everything about them makes me happy! 😊
It’s a really cool show, it’s a bit trashy at times (like most sci-fi/fantasy shows) but it’s a lot of fun! Also some of the characters are really annoying and everyone dies. 😂

  7. Wow these are some really long books! The longest book I have on my to-read list is the fifth Game of Thrones book which is over 1000 pages! The next is 11/22/63 as well actually. Even still both of these don’t really come close to Les Mis. Good luck getting through that one Lauren.
I normally don’t mind long books, if they’re interesting enough I just start reading and don’t stop until I’m finished, for some reason I guess I’m just not in the mood for Game of Thrones at the moment because it’s been on my to-read list for ages and I still haven’t picked it up. 🙂

  8. Oh, precious precious big books. I used to be a big book snob growing up. Now, my adult brain just can’t handle them. I will literally groan seeing 400 pages in a book now. Stephen King is definitely the reason my TBR pile is strong in page number. Add George R.R. Martin to the mix, and I’ll probably drown beneath the weight of the pages. The longest book on TBR right now might be It from Stephen King. One day, I will have the strength to read it (or the patience to listen to the audiobook).

    1. Haha, I love that! I remember reading Order of the Phoenix in a day so I don’t know if big books didn’t bother me back in the day or if it’s just because it was Harry Potter. I’ve heard the GoT books keep getting bigger? Which is pretty terrifying 😂😂 Oooh IT is like the one Stephen King book that’s not on my TBR because I have an intense clown phobia and just thinking about it scares me.

  9. I don’t mind a lot of pages but I don’t like the physical size and that will sometimes stop me reading because I only read one book at a time and I can’t take a large book with me in my bag. Having them on a kindle does help for that I agree.

  10. Great list! Big books also intimidate me! I have, however, read all of the Game of Thrones books so far and let me tell you that was something of a MISSION. I have the hardback of A Dance with Dragons rather than the paperbacks which are split into two and it is ENORMOUS. I’m pretty sure if I put it on my top shelf it would break everything.

One day I would love to be able to say I’ve read Les Miserables. It’s on my kindle but I don’t know if I’ll ever get through it!

  11. I DNF’d Under the Dome. I’m glad I did because I googled the ending and hated it. Just FYI hahah Game of Thrones is intimidating. I’m on book 3 but have been for about a year. The first book is pretty similar to the show so it’s actually kind of hard to get into if you’ve watched it. House of Leaves is on my TBR! It’s one of my husband’s favorite books and he’s been wanting me to read it FOR SO LONG. I started it recently but put it back down to read a few shorter books so I had something to review >.< oops.

Most of the long books on my TBR are classics. Which are intimidating because they're classics, then add the # of pages and just…no.

  12. Les Mis is over 1,400 pages long!? I have it on my TBR because of the same reason as you, I was obsessed with the movie. I never knew it was that long though. I’m good with books that have 700 pages and bellow but once it starts getting past 700 I get intimidated because I’m a slow reader and the thought of how long it will take me to read it makes me anxious. And per Goodreads Les Mis is actually the longest book on my TBR. 😂
It also showed me that both ACOWAR and Lord of Shadows are 700+ pages. I don’t know how I’ll finish both of those in May. 😶

  13. I don’t really get intimidated by big books, I usually just take it chapter for chapter and see how it goes, after a while you’ll only have a few chapters left 😊 11/22/63 is really, really good! Definitely worth the length. I love Stephen King and the longest book I’ve ever read was IT by Stephen King and that was also so good! I’m sure one day you’ll be able to concur them all 💕

  14. Big books intimidate me so much, I think because i’m then like oh gosh the time it’s going to take me to read you. I think Order of the Phoenix may be the longest I have read too, lady midnight looks pretty hefty on my bookcase but I can’t remember how long that one is.. oops.
I just read Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows so their 600/500 or so pages so right now their the longest on my TBR. I once considered adding Game of Thrones to my TBR but honestly I will never read it. I’ve heard its not far from the TV show (which i’ve not watched properly either so… only person in the world?)

  15. I have to say, A Song Of Ice And Fire is a good training series for reading long books. As long as you keep in mind they’re written like history books and there are many characters who you won’t need to remember because they’ll never turn up again. Also, if you start reading now you’ll probably not finish until Winds of Winter is released (supposedly this year, but I’ll believe it when I see it).

  16. HAMILTON!
Ahem… I mean, yes, that one is on my TBR as well 🙂
I agree that big books intimidate me as well and a lot of the time I end up procrastinating on reading them, unless I’m super excited to read them or they’re part of a well loved series (like ACOL <3)

  17. Your reasons for reading/not reading Les Mis = ME. Basically, I watched the movie & became obsessed with it & then I saw the size of the book & I was like oh….maybe not. Ditto to A Little Life xD Usually if a book looks too intimidating but I’m still dying to read it, I listen to it as an audiobook (like The Diviners)
