Music Monday šŸŽ§ Top 5 Albums of January

Top 5 January.png

I basically stole this idea from a recent video byĀ Jarrod AlongeĀ where he talked about his 5 favourite albums from theĀ month. I’m going to try and do a post like this on one Monday of every month. The albumsĀ IĀ mention don’t necessarily have to be newly released. It’s just whatever I’m feeling! I’m constantly discovering old albums from new bands so there’s probably gonna be a huge variety of release years! These are in no particular order either. I kinda cheated with this one a little becauseĀ with Ed Sheeran, The Maine and From First To Last releasing new songs in January I mostly released to single releasesĀ so a couple of these are from the first week of February, but it still counts šŸ˜Ž.

One OK Rock – Ambitions (2017)
Alt. Rock

Stream Ambitions on Spotify // Buy Ambitions on iTunes

One OK Rock are a band I only discovered in January. I found them because 5 Seconds of Summer collaborated with them on a song off their new album. I immediately became obsessed with the song (super impressed with 5SOS’ vocal range too because this song is a lot heavier than what they’d normally produce) and it’s pretty much the only thing I’ve listened to. Alex Gaskarth, from All Time Low, also collabed with them and I loved that too. I then listened to One OK Rock’s songs and I was super impressed. I can’t believe I hadn’t listened to them sooner! I think this could potentially be one of my favourite albums of 2017. Also, if you’re interested you can listen to their lead single in Japanese too! You can probably find more of there songs in Japanese too if you do a quick YouTube search.

Ceres – Drag It Down To You (2016)
Alt. Rock

Stream Drag It Down To You on Spotify // Buy Drag It Down On YouĀ on iTunes

I found Ceres because they’re playing a local festival that I’m attending next week. I fell in love with their gritty and raw sound instantly. They incorporate so many of my favourite genres. There’s definitely a lot of rock, but there’s also some softer/indie elements too. Their lyrics are amazing and if I had found this album last year it for sure would have made my Top Albums of 2016. In fact, it’s probably my favourite album that I’ve heard so far this year. I can’t wait to see them live! Plus there’ an Aussie band soĀ šŸ™ŒšŸ»

Songs You ShouldĀ Listen To

The Comfort – Love [EP] (2016)
Post-Hardcore

Stream Love [EP] on SpotifyĀ //Ā Buy Love [EP] on iTunes

I recently came across a promoting platformĀ called Dream Bound. They specialise in promoting bands that fall under the punk/hardcore categories. I found The Comfort on there and immediately I was like YESSSS. I love finding new music, but I get even more excited when I find new post-hardcore bands because that genre will always have a special place in my heart. I especially love the lyrics to their songĀ Forgive / Accept / LoveĀ because I relateĀ a lot.

What You Should Listen To

Fall Out Boy – Save Rock and Roll (2013)
Alt. Rock

Stream Save Rock And Roll on SpotifyĀ //Ā Buy Save Rock And Roll on iTunesĀ

I still remember the EXACT moment Fall Out Boy announced that they were off hiatus. I don’t think I’ve ever freaked out so much in my entire life. I was obsessed with Save Rock And Roll for MONTHS. The other day I thought I’d be ready to watch The Youngblood Chronicles (the set of music videos they released for the album) but it turns out I was NOT READY and I shed actual tears. It made me remember just how much I loved the album. Nothing will beat From Under The Cork Tree, but it’s one of my all time favourites regardless.

Songs You Should Listen To

Forever The Sickest Kids – Underdog Alma Mater (2008)
Powerpop

Stream Underdog Alma Mater on SpotifyĀ //Ā Buy Underdog Alma Mater on iTunes

Okay, talk about throwing it back, BUT LET ME EXPLAIN. 1) music from 2006-2010 is EVERYTHING and 2) I saw that FTSK wereĀ announced to play a festival in the US where they were gonna be playing songs from Underdog Alma MaterĀ and I was like “holy shit I need to listen to that album”. Is it cringe-y and full of embarassing lyrics? Kind of. Do I care? No. Listening to this album filled me with so much happiness and nostalgia. It was such a fun experience and I still knew all the words. Songs like Coffee BreakĀ prove that the band has a serious side too and that song still resonates with me today. It’s crazy that 10 years later I still feel like I’m “growing up” and am not ready to face it.Ā Music today just can’t seem toĀ emulate the vibes of MySpace era music. If you’re feeling down then I definitely recommend listening to some albums that were released in 2008 because it’ll instantly brighten your day.

  1. I haven’t actually heard of any of these artists you featured this week Lauren, except Fall Out Boy.
I know I’ve said this before but they are my all-one favourite band and I love the Save Rock and Roll album so much. Just One Yesterday is actually my favourite track so I’m really glad you featured that one! šŸ˜
At the moment I’m kind of listening to their newer album; American Beauty/American Psycho on repeat! šŸ˜€

Great list, I still have to listen to One Ok Rock, my brother is obsessed and is always trying to get me to listen to them, one day! I heard the new album is really good, like all over my Twitter feed everyone was talking about it- maybe that should give me a clue to listen to them ha!

  3. Ahh I also fell in love wih One Ok Rock last month! In fact, I’m still listening to Ambitions right now šŸ™‚ I usually only like a few songs from any album and it rarely happens that I love an album from beginning to end (except in the magical 2006-2010 period šŸ˜‰ ), but I do love this album! Oh, and actually the only other album that I have loved completely after 2006-2010 is… Save Rock and Roll by Fall Out Boy ā¤ I think it's my second favorite ever by them, after From Under the Cork Tree.

    1. Oooh, yayyy!!! I saw you were listening to them on Spotify ā™„ It’s such a great album šŸ˜€ Those years were seriously the best!!! I love a lot of albums, but I think the majority of all my time favourites were released back then. There was just something about it. Totally with you on Save Rock and Roll too!

      1. Aw no, you’d be great! My uni has a student newspaper and we get to review shows and music but I never do the latter cause I suck at listening to new music and just hold on to old songs I love. šŸ˜… It would be perfect for you!

  4. OMG! Forever The Sickest Kids’ album Underdog Alma Mater was my favorite album back when it was released! I was obsessed with Whoa Oh! Seriously, that band brings back so many memories. And you’re right music now just doesn’t have the same vibe. I kind of want to pull out my CD now and put it on repeat šŸ™ˆ. Also, I hadn’t heard of One OK Rock until now but I think I’ll have to go look up more of their music because I am in love with that 5SOS collab šŸ˜. Great post, Lauren!!
