My Anticipated Reads for the First Half of 2017 (Part 2)

anticipated-2017-reads

I’m excited for so many books that are being released in 2017, just in the first half of the year, that I had to make 2 separate posts! In Part 1 I mentioned Fantasies, Thrillers, Horrors and Sci Fi so make sure to check that out!!

In this post I’m focusing on historicals, contemporaries, short stories, non-fiction and some books that I missed or recently discovered from the genres I mentioned in the previous post.

Sci Fi & Fantasy part 2.png

dreadnought-the-seafarers-kiss-the-wanderers-down-among-the-sticks-and-bones-nemesis

Dreadnought by April Daniels [Jan 24] – A transgirl superhero story written by a transwoman? Yes thank you! So excited about this.

The Seafarer’s Kiss by Julie Ember [May 4] – Bisexual f/f retelling of the little mermaid!!!

The Wanderers by Meg [March 14] – Humans are about to go to Mars for the first time. Three astronauts are preparing for the trip and enter a stimulation. What’s real and not real starts to blur. It sounds soooo good and the cover is super pretty. I love space.

Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire [June 13] – I can’t believe I forgot to mention this in my first post!! Every Heart a Doorway was easily one of my favourite reads of last year so I can’t wait for this!! It’s going to be a prequel that focuses on two characters that featured in the first book.

Nemesis by Brendan Reichs [March 21] – A girl is murdered but then hours later she wakes up with no signs the crime, this has been happening every 2 years since she was 8. There’s also an asteroid that’s about to hit earth??? I don’t know. This just sounds really interesting.

Thrillers part 2.png

one-of-us-is-lying-a-good-idea-to-catch-a-killer

One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus [May 30] – I just found out about this recently! A bunch of kids are in detention and at the end one of them is dead and it’s a whole who done it situation.

A Good Idea by Cristina Moracho [Feb 28] – I don’t really know how to explain this??? It’s just a thriller where a girl is murdered and this guy is trying to figure out what happened.

To Catch a Killer by Sheryl Scarborough [Feb 7] – When the MC was a baby her mother was murdered and she doesn’t know her father. She develops an interest in forensics. 14 years later she’s the center of another murder when she finds her biology teacher murdered. She decides to start investigating everything. As someone who has an interesting in every crime this sounds like it has the potential to be amazing. It’s also published by Tor and I trust them.

historicals

the-gentlemans-guide-to-vice-and-virtue-see-what-i-have-done

The Gentelman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee [June 20] – Set in 18th century Europe. Two guys are on a Grand Tour and discover a magical artifact. SHIT GOES DOWN. There’s LGBTQIA+ rep!

See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt [Mar 28] – This is a fictional take on the real life crimes involving Lizzie Borden. I’m incredibly fascinated by that case (#NotASerialKiller).

contemporaries

the-upside-of-unrequited-the-love-interest-noteworthy-queens-of-geek-the-inexplicable-logic-of-my-life-the-hate-u-give-history-is-all-you-left-me

The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli [April 11] – I honestly don’t know much about this except it features twin sisters. I recently finished Simon Vs and it was so adorable. This is set in the same world as Simon Vs so I’m sure it’s going to be just as adorable and I can’t wait! It release the day before my birthday so it’s going to be an awesome early present!!

The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich [May 16] – THIS IS ONE OF MY MOST ANTICIPATED READS! I NEED IT NOW!!!!!! It’s apparently super meta and pokes fun at a lot of YA tropes. Two guys are competing for the attention of a girl, but they end up falling in love with each other instead? YES? PLEASE?

Noteworthy by Riley Redgate [May 2] – The MC is a bisexual Chinese girl who is struggling to find an a capella group. A spot opens up, but the group is all male. She decides to dress up as a guy and auditions. This sounds super interesting.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas [Feb 28] – This is centered around Black Lives Matter and is going to be an EXTREMELY important read. I can’t wait to read this and I feel like it’s something EVERYBODY should read.

The Inexplicable Logic of my Life by Benjamin Alire Sáenz [March 7] – I’m currently reading Ari & Dante and am in love with the writing style so I’m sure this will be similar. It sounds like it has a ton of diverse elements in regards to sexuality and race. I can’t wait to read this.

History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera [Jan 17] – MORE HAPPY THAN NOT RIPPED OUT MY HEART AND I AM READY FOR ADAM TO DO IT AGAIN WITH THIS BOOK. The MC’s ex boyfriend dies and he’s trying to figure out his feelings and the only person who seems to understand is his ex’s boyfriend.

Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde [March 14] – I KNEW I HAD TO READ THIS THE MOMENT I SAW THE COVER. Then I heard that it’s about WOC loving other WOC and I was like YES THANK YOU PLEASE. AND IT’S ALL SET AT A COMIC CON ESQUE EVENT. I CAN’T EVEN EXPRESS HOW EXCITED I AM FOR THIS.

anthologies-non-fiction

begin-end-begin-the-refrigerator-monologues-queer-there-and-everywhere-here-we-are

Begin, End, Begin: A #LoveOzYA Anthology edited by Danielle Binks [April 24] – I am all for advocating Australian YA. This features authors I love like Amie Kaufman and Will Kostakis. I can’t wait to read more of them and discover new Aussie authors.

Here We Are: Feminism for the Real World edited by Kelly Jensen [Jan 24] – I really want to read more books on feminism. I’m really hoping that this is going to be inclusive! I’ve heard some good things so fingers crossed.

Queer, There and Everywhere by Sarah Prager [May 23] – This is a non-fiction history book about Queer people. Again, I’m hoping it’s inclusive and informative. I definitely don’t know as much about LGBTQIA+ history as I should so hopefully that’ll help change that!

The Refrigerator Monologues by Catherynne M. Valente [June 6] – I just found this the other day when I was watching Jen Campbell’s most anticipated releases of 2017. It’s a collection of short stories about women super-heroes who have been abused, tortured, killed ect. just to further a male’s storyline. This is a trope that annoys me endlessly and I’ve seen anything like this before so I am super excited.

  2. These are some amazing picks Lauren. I am so so excited for Down Among the Sticks and Bones because Every Heart a Doorway was a favourite of mine as well and I can;’t wait to jump back into that world and also see one of the new worlds the children visited. I am definitely intrigued by See What I Have Done, I kind of agree with you I’m a little fascinated by the crimes Lizzie Borden committed as well #NotASerialKillerEither.
But oh your list of contemporaries is pretty much exactly the same as mine. I cannot wait for The Love Interest, besides Kasie West’s releases it’s probably my most anticipated YA contemporary release of this year, and I need to start Adam Silvera’s books but I’m already excited for the release of History is All You Left Me.
    Great picks! 😀

  3. I’m anticipating the majority of these books though not the scifi because I’m not that big of a fan. I really want to read the Here We Are anthology when it comes out! I’m not the best at reading short story collections/anthologies but it looks so good 😀

  4. This year looks SO amazing in terms of releases. I’m currently reading Noteworthy and so far I’m enjoying it – I’m getting Pitch Perfect vibes from it and I LOVE THAT MOVIE. Also excited for Queens of Geek, The Upside of Unrequited, The Love Interest, The Hate U Give… OK, pretty much all the contemporaries you listed. ❤

  5. I’m really excited for a lot of these too. Especially The Inexplicable Logic Of My Life, The Hate U Give, The Love Interests, and History Is All You Left Me. It’s so good to hear that you’re enjoying Ari & Dante by the way. I may need to reread that this year because I’ve been thinking about it lately. Great list, Lauren! 😊

Every time I see someone’s “most anticipated” list, I just get reminded of how many amazing releases are coming out this year and I get so excited, hahaha.

  11. Ahh there are so many great books on this list! I’ve recently read an ARC of Here We Are: Feminism For the Real World, and it was fantastic! It was very inclusive, and discussed topics like intersectional feminism, race, body image, sex, gender, etc. I’d definitely recommend it!

  12. There are some awesome books on that list. Tried to get Nemesis but did get a book called
The Careful Undressing of You from Penguin. Starting to try and read some contemporaries as you know that’s not my biggest genre! 😂😉🤞
