Reading & Blogging Goals for 2017

Reading and Blogging Goals for 2017.png

I had no idea I was going to start reading again in 2016, so I didn’t really set any official goals for myself. I did make a few little ones along the way though, which I accomplished 🙌🏻 like to finally read a Stephen King book and The Book Thief and to contact some publishers. I read out of my comfort zone. I also accomplished some things I wasn’t expecting like opening a Society6 and RedBubble store.

Because I’ll be starting 2017 reading I wanted to try and set some more structured goals for myself. They’re not too specific because I’m not the kind of person that can deal with strict guidelines. I like giving myself some room.

That said, here are some things I want to work on this year.

goals

reading-goals

Read More Diversely

I did start reading more diverse books last year, but definitely not enough. This year I really want to make conscious effort to diversify my reading. I especially want to read more #ownvoices books. It is so, so important that we read diversely so we can learn and grow and become better people.

Finish my Uncompleted Series

I have a really bad habit of starting series and not finishing them. This is for a ton of different reasons including: my attention span, lack of commitment and my terrible memory. This year I want to finish up a ton of series I started including Vampire Academy, Miss Peregrine’s, The Lunar Chronicles and Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

Read More Classics

I only started reading Classics last year. Until I started blogging I had no intention to ever read them. I never had to read them at school so I was really intimidated by them because of language ect. I’ve really enjoyed the few I’ve read though and I want to read even more. I’m going to aim for 1 a month.

Reread some Favourites

When I was younger I lost count how many times I reread Harry Potter, however it’s been YEARS since I last reread any of the books. I just feel so overwhelmed with how huge my TBR is that I push rereading aside. I would love to try and reread it this year along with some other favourites of mine like Thirteen Reasons Why, Perks of Being A Wallflower, Night Film and The Raven Cycle.

Read the Books I Own

I have a book buying obsession and I am totally okay with that. That means though that I have an embarrassing amount of unread books on my shelves. This is also because I’m so distracted and there’s so many books out there and I WANT TO READ THEM ALL RIGHT NOW. I’m not putting myself under any kind of book buying ban, but I want to try and read the books I already own before I buy too many more.

(Please Note: Lauren is not to be reminded of this goal in potential future book haul posts)

Stay Up to Date with My Comics

Falling behind on comics when you follow multiple runs can be the worst because all of a sudden there’s 20 issues you need to read so you just keep putting it off and it gets even worse. Definitely going to try and stay more on top of things this year.

Clean Out my GoodRead Shelves

This is pretty self explanatory. I have an alarming amount of books on my GR shelves and that’s because I created my GR account SIX YEARS AGO. I was extremely click happy and added ALL THE BOOKS!!! I’ve slowly been removing some but then add more just as fast 🙈 I really want to make a dent in removing all the books from there that I really have no desire in reading.

Get Back to my Roots

My favourite genres are horrors and thrillers and I felt like I really neglected them this year for a lot of hyped Fantasies. In 2017 I want to get back into reading more horrors and thrillers even if they’re not as popular as other books.

blogging-goals

Write Reviews for Books I Read

I struggle with reviews. Kinda ironic when the word is in my name, but I get super anxious when I write them. I always feel nervous because I’m not great with words. There are so many books I’ve read that I never reviewed. I’ll probably do a lot of mini/rapid reviews and then full reviews for books I really love or for ARCs.

Get Better at Replying to Comments

I’m not the best at keeping up with comments. I love receiving them so much, but I feel really overwhelmed sometimes trying to keep up with them. I hate talking about it because I don’t want to discourage anyone from commenting. It’s just a weird way that my brain works.

Be More Original

I think it’s totally okay to post whatever you want. Personally, I want to create more original content. I really want to push myself this year and make my blog bigger and better. I definitely want to create more discussion posts.

Possibly Become Self Hosted

This is a possibly because I’m still debating if. I want to purchase self hosting because I feel so limited by WP.com design options and not being able to use JavaScript ect. However I’m still not sure because I know a lot of people who self-host have issues with comments and followers. Plus, there’s the whole redirecting thing that will have to happen. I might just upgrade my WP.com account to premium. I know that won’t give me all the options as a WP.org account would but I’d have my own domain at least!

Reach One Year of Blogging (and More)

Pretty self-explanatory and simple, haha. I want to make it to a year of blogging (which is crazy???) and obviously more but a year will be my first huge milestone and it’s happening in March! I have no idea what I’m going to be doing for it yet 😂

Relax

I don’t want to be so stressed out. I want to stop comparing myself to other people and stop being so hard on myself. I gotta chill. When life gets in the way of blogging I need to stop feeling guilty about it.

What are some of your goals for 2017?

If you set goals for yourself in 2016 how did you go?

I hope you’re all having a fantastic day.

  1. Perks of Being a Wallflower would be an awesome re-read. Maybe I’ll do that too!
Oh and I know the comic problem all too well 😛 I’m also going to try to keep up with mine. (especially in the DC rebirth series I tend to fall behind and then I need to catch up with at least 5 singles :P).

I’m reaching my One Year of Blogging this month and I still don’t know what to do about it 😛 So I hope you’ll figure it out, because you’ve still got a lot of time 🙂

Happy New Year and your goals look awesome and do-able! :))

    Here’s my 2017 Goals Post.

  2. Great goals – I have a few of the same ones you do! My main goal this year is definitely to read more diversely. I did okay with this last year, but I definitely have a lot of room for improvement. Did you see Naz’s challenge he’s doing this year? All you have to do is link up reviews/posts about diverse books but it seems like it’ll be a good motivator (for me at least, haha). I really should make an effort to finish some series that I’ve started. I usually do pretty well with that, but if all the books aren’t out when I start reading the series, I am the worst at reading the books when they actually come out. Good luck with all your goals!

  3. Good luck with your goals! Reading diversely is one of my goals, too. I want to read books written by people who have led very different lives from me. That’s the best way to learn about the world.

  4. I set myself the goal of hitting 500 followers before I even consider self hosting, just because it won’t really be worth the money until then knowing how little money is made from adsense

  5. You can actually buy your domain without upgrading to premium. When you upgrade to premium, your domain is included in the purchase. I upgraded to premium mainly because I wanted the option to customize my template to look the way I wanted. It may be a bit tedious since you have to learn CSS, but each template has its own forum page and you can always ask someone to help you code things if needed. Good luck on achieving your blogging and reading goals for 2017! 🙂

    1. Yeah, I saw that! I think I would just do the whole upgrade tho because at least you get a little option to customise. I was a web design student so fortunately I’m pretty well versed in CSS! It’s actually why I want to upgrade because I hate not being able to customise anything. Thank you!!

  6. Great goals, Lauren! I hope you’ll do great for all of these!
My goals are kind of similar to yours. I’d also like to focus on re-reading more – I love re-reading but I usually feel guilty because it’s taking time away from shiny new books.
Also, haha, I love your disclaimer saying not to hold this against you during book haul posts 😉

  7. I love this! I’m exactly the same with series… I have so many I need to finish 😂 There are some great goals here, our lists are very similar!

  8. I’ve been debating about self-hosting as well but I think I’ll just end up going down the upgraded root as well cause the hassle of self-hosting doesn’t seem worth it right now haha.
I’ve not read a classic since school. I think I’d enjoy them now that I’m not being told to read them for assignments and such but I also find them incredibly daunting so I think I’ll just have to muster the courage to pick one up.
I’ve not thought of many goals for the year yet but in general I want to try and take more chances and not let fear stop me from doing them.

  9. I’ve also made it my goal to finish my incomplete series. For me it’s mostly because I get distracted by other books and, yeah (who am i kidding?) because of procrastination. I also need to finish the Vampire Academy series 😅
And I completely understand what you say about comics. I get annoyed to have only one issue of a series a month, but then you add different series and add and add and add and you have a hundred issues to read.
The same thing happens to me with reviewing. Well, not only that (since I opened my blog three days ago), but anything that I share (like on social media). I love words but I struggle with them a lot so I get how frustrating that is 😭 You’re not alone, if it makes you feel better.
Mini reviews are a great idea, and you can even include them on wrap ups or on separate posts.
You’ll definetely reach your one year of blogging, it’s so soon!! Yaaaaaaaaaaaay *throws confetti* You’ll have to celebrate when the time comes 😉
All your goals are great and I’m sure you can do them. It will make you feel a lot better too, so good luck!

  10. These are some really good goals to have! 🙂 Reading my own books is a goal of mine too this year. I got a bunch for Christmas so I’m going back and forth. One library book, one book I own, until I get through them all. I think it’s the only way I will get it done.
Good luck with everything & hopefully 2017 turns out the way you would like! 🙂

  11. Great goals and really well thought out. I appreciate your honesty and would say that a lot of what you have expressed around nerves when posting reviews or feeling overwhelmed with comments etc. Applies to a lot of us at one point or another. I think you have a great blog and long may it continue. Good luck!

  12. Reading more diverse books is one of my main goals, too. I don’t normally read books with LGBT+ characters or characters with mental illnesses, so I plan to read more books in those genres this year. My one year on blogging is the year as well! But mine is at the end of June. XD Good luck with all your goals, Lauren! Happy New Year ❤

  13. These are great goals for both reading and blogging Lauren, and I’m sure you’ll be able to cross most of them off your list as well. 😀
Reading more diversely is one of mine for this year, I think I made a decent start on it in 2016, more so than any other year, but there are so many other diverse books out there I’ve yet to get started on and I need to try and get around to them soon. I’d say read more classics should be one of mine but I’m not a fan of classics at all, and in terms of Goodreads I need to create an account before I can sort out my shelves! 😀
I hope you manage to make your blogging ones too. It seems so strange that you haven’t already been blogging for a year though, how long is it until your one year blogiversary?

  14. I hope you have fun reading classics and discover some good ones! I’m gonna have to battle them for the next three years. 😂
If it makes you feel any better, reviews are my favourite posts to read, especially yours!
Yay more discussion posts! Looking forward to that!

  15. Awesome goals, they seem doable but still something to work hard for. What would you change for the self-hosting? I’m interested! Also, woot for going back to your roots in what you love to read!!
I have a post going up soon that looks at the same thing.

    1. Thank you!! I would mostly just be changing up my theme. I was a web design student so the design options that free WP.com accounts offer are so limiting. Self hosting would allow me to have complete control over everything, but I know people have issues with followers/comments and switching over so it feels like a lot of unnecessary hassle, haha. I’ll probably just upgrade my WP.com account to a premium one because that’ll give me a little extra design options. Looking forward to seeing your post 😀

  16. I’ll be interested to see if you choose to self-host! I’ve got the WP Premium right now and have debated going the self-hosting route because of customization. I’ve only used a small bit of CSS on my site so far, and I know I haven’t even scratched the surface with what I can do with the WP Premium.
I’m new to web design, I haven’t started learning Javascript yet, and I’m honestly not sure I want to bother with self-hosting. The blogs I follow that self-host I never seem to get return comment notifications on, so I sometimes don’t bother commenting.

  17. I think we have quite a few 2017 goals in common! I want to make a more conscious effort to read more diverse books this year too. I’m also hoping to find time to write more reviews because I know positive reviews is the kind of extra boost that marginalized writers really need. But tbh, I also struggle with reviews. It takes me quite a lot of time to write them and I agonize over every word….definitely something I need to work on this year haha. As for 2016 goals, I accomplished some of them but kind of ended up creating new goals throughout the year instead of sticking with the ones I formulated at the start of 2016.

  18. These are great goals, and I think we have a lot in common 🙂 I really want to try to read more diverse books, even if it’s just one a month, it’d be something I’d love to do already. Also, I get the feeling about reviewing lots of hyped books but missing your “roots”. This year, I have done that as well, it’s hard not to get into the whole hype thing, but I always loved contemporary and Ir eally want to get back into it more, and ignore the hype for these books that arenn’t really my thing 🙂
About the self-hosting thing, I’d love to know how you get around with it, if you ever decide to do it. I have been wondering about it, but I’m a bit shy to take this step for now, and so unsure about all the problems that could come with it. Maybe WP Premium might be a good first solution? I’d love to know your thoughts once you decide 🙂

  19. It feels so weird that many of us have issues reading the books we own, hahahaha. But adding books on shelves is so much easier than reading them all!!! I feel the same way with reviews. I’m still very shy and not confident so writing reviews is always a challenge, I feel I can never totally express what I mean. Not being an English native doesn’t help xD My plan is to go premium sometime this year or maybe for my second blogiversary. I’ll never go self-hosted because it would be a disaster, hahaha.
    Good luck with everything ❤

  20. These are some wonderful goals! I feel the exact same way about reviews. English isn’t my first language, but I’m absolutely fine with it until I have to write reviews. It’s like I suddenly forget all of the English words I know and all I can type is ‘I liked this book.’ I really need to get better at it!
I hope you’ll achieve all of your goals ❤

  21. You’ve got some great goals here! I also want to read more diversely, especially #ownvoices books too. I wanted to participate in 2017 Diversity Bingo but I don’t have enough money to buy all the books I’d need to complete it in a year haha, but I’m still going to try and read more diversely.

Also glad to hear you’re going to read more Classics! I used to be terrified of them until I had to study them for my degree, and now some Classics are my favourite books. I definitely recommend Modernism, like Virginia Woolf (my fave) and other Modernist writers from the early 1900s. And if you want something very weird and gothic, then The Monk by Matthew Lewis is good, but it does deal with some sensitive topics.

  23. These are all amazing! In fact, I’m going to throw them onto my list of goals for the year. As for WP self-hosted, I’m self-hosted and have never had any issues with comments or followers? What kind of issues do people have with that?

I’ve seen a few people say that they can’t comment on self-hosted blogs via the WP reader or find a way to follow them automatically (they have to type their address in the the manage followed sites). I mean it’s nothing too major. I think I’m just irrationally paranoid though. It’s good to hear that you don’t have issues though!!

      1. Oh hmm, I’ve never had anyone complain about that, so I actually wouldn’t be too sure if it’s happened. I realized there isn’t a button to follow via WP, but people still do so they must be doing it manually. And as for commenting, no clue! I use Disqus so I don’t even know if they actually CAN comment through the reader either way :/ You gave me a few things to look into!

  24. So many great goals; you can do them all! *Pom poms.*

I especially (a) sympathize with the difficulty of writing reviews, and (b) support the not-getting-too-stressed-out thing. Your health is more important than anything else, so try not to feel guilty if you need to not respond to comments, or post regularly, or whatever you need to do to stay in peak form. =)

    Happy new year!

  25. I totally struggle with relaxing…I’m always comparing myself to other people – this person has more comments, this person has better graphics, that person is a way better writer than me – it can really stress a person out to always be looking at others for validation. I’m going to join you in the mission to relax more…Good luck to both of us! 😉

I can’t wait to see what you do with your blog and I just think you’re awesome ❤️

  27. Soo many great goals here! I would have written up a post like this but I’ve been super lazy recently. I have to force myself to write up posts and it’s not fun while I”m doing it, but I do enjoy the attention my blog gets when I write them, haha, so I guess I’ll keep it up.
1 Classic a month is an admirable goal. I certainly couldn’t do it! lol hat’s off to you. Ooooh, please review more horror! Would love to read those reviews. I know reviewing kind of sucks, I dread writing them tbh, but I just can’t give them up.
Your goal to reply to comments resonates with me right now. My blog has gotten a ton recently, like waaaay more than I’m used to, so I can’t keep up with them and then I feel terrible for not having the time to respond and maybe visit back and I think people will see me as selfish and that I only care about my blog, which is totally not true because I just don’t have time to do it all *cries*
I mean, I could basically write a response every single one of your prompts but that would take for ever…so I hope you have a great 2017 and that your blog continues to grow. You are a valued member of this community. Please stick around!

  28. These are all amazing goals! I feel you on the keeping up with comments part – scratch that – I’m even struggling with *reading* everyone’s posts most of the time. So excited to hear what you think about the ending of Daughter of Smoke and Bone! It’s so hard to reread books when there’s tons being released all the time right 😳
Ahh the goodreads shelves, mine are also stuffed with books I added at the very beginning and forgot about many of them or am just not interested anymore. Absolutely can not believe it’s been almost a year since you started your blog 😳 Can’t wait to read more original content from you 😄

  29. Wow, I’ve just noticed that your blog is barely an year old and yet you are super successful (in my eyes) – first congratulations on that! Your goals for 2017 are worth approaching myself and sound very appealing! I for once sorted out my goodreads shelf in December since I had the same thought! Too many books I’m probably not interesting in anymore – better get rid off them 🙂 AND (it’s a big and) I am also struggeling with the question if I need to self host or just upgrade my wordpress account to premium. It has its advantages and disadvantages, really hard to decide.

Basically, your goals are the same as mine and I wish you all the best to accomplish them all! 🙂

  30. So many fantastic goals. I hope you accomplish them all, Lauren 💕! We actually have a few of the same ones. Namely reading more diverse books, reviewing more, and finishing series. I have so many unfinished series 🙈😂. I’m also looking into updating to premium for the customization aspect but haven’t decided if I want to yet or not. Mainly because I’m not all that great with coding haha.

  31. I think you’re doing awesome! Keep up the good work bc I know you’ll knock all these resolutions out of the park! I need to finish my series, too…I have the same prob as you. I just had The Midnight Star and let it get returned to the library bc I wasn’t in the mood. Ugh. And I also need to clean out my shelf.
And hopefully, stop getting put in spam jail, like I am right now!
