Let’s Talk: Why I’m Glad I Joined the Bookish Community This Year

why-im-glad-i-started-blogging

Before March, I had no idea a “Bookish Community” even existed outside Goodreads or some cool edits on Tumblr. I didn’t know BookTube was a thing and I definitely didn’t know Book Blogging was a thing either. I thought blogging was reserved for things like fashion and cooking.

I’ve told the story about why I started blogging a million times so I won’t bore you with that again. Instead, I’m just going to list some reasons why I am so eternally grateful that I discovered this community and joined it.

Of course this is going to be the first thing I talk about! For the first time since my Livejournal days, I felt like I’ve truly belonged somewhere. I feel like I’m a real part of the community here. I have met so many wonderful people this year and I am eternally grateful. It’s kind of overwhelming to think that if I never started this blog I might not know they even existed. There’s way too many people to mention individual names, but I’m sure you all know who you are ♥♥ I honestly can not thank you enough. Even if you haven’t known it, all of you have helped me so much this year. You’ve all inspired me, made me laugh and helped me realise that I need to be kinder to myself. I feel like the luckiest person ever for having known you all. It’s so great being able to have discussions and fangirl with all of you. I love how we can have serious conversations and then also squeal and keysmash about our faves.

It's helped my anxiety.png

I have severe anxiety. It’s something that affects my life to the point where I struggle with the most simple of tasks. I find it hard to even have conversations with people online. That is until I started blogging. This year I initiated conversations, I joined in with Twitter chats and the craziest of all – I contacted big name publishers. When you have anxiety you think your entire existence is an inconvenience. It’s hard to not think that every time I speak I’m annoying people. Blogging has made me slowly start to realise that’s not true. I am still extremely shy. My anxiety isn’t “cured” but things I’ve done this year I never would have dreamed of doing before. They’re tiny little steps, but they are still really important to me. Before blogging my life was: wake up, Tumblr, ?????, sleep, repeat. Now, I feel like I have a little structure. I feel like I have a reason to get out of bed. Blogging also gave me the courage to open up a society6 and RedBubble store.

all-the-books

This is an obvious one, but still. I have discovered so many amazing books through blogging and ones that I probably never have found without it: The Yellow Wallpaper and Homegoing and ones that I knew existed but probably never would have read like The Book Thief. Blogging has reminded me why I loved reading and it made me fall in love with it all over again. It makes me wonder how I ever went so long without reading something. Even though my TBR is literally the size of several Mount Everests stacked on top of each other and my bank account hates me I am so grateful that I get to discover so many new and wonderful books almost every day.

Becoming a better person.png

Blogging has definitely helped me become a better person. I have learnt so much. I’m constantly being educated on important topics. It’s made me really take a look at the media I consume and realise that I need to make the conscious effort to diversify it. I definitely come from a place of privilege and there’s lots of problems in the world that I never even noticed before. I’m not perfect and I’ve definitely made mistakes and I’ll probably make some more, but I’m growing and learning and I owe a lot of it to blogging and all the wonderful community members who are willing to share their experiences. Thank you!

  1. Fantastic post! 💕 and you’re totally right about the whole reaching out to people thing! While I don’t have anxiety and have no idea how that feels, I’ve always been nervous reaching out to new people (especially online, since I can’t gauge their facial reactions or body language towards me), for fear that I’d annoy them without realizing it, but the book community has really helped me with that! Plus, all the wonderful people to talk to has helped as well, including you ❤

  2. Beautiful Post Lauren! I’m also a person who struggles with anxiety on the daily and blogging has certainly helped in many occasions. Glad to have found an outlet & a safe space like the book blogging community. Meeting bloggers from all over the world including you has been a great & positive experience. Having a place to discuss a passion for reading is amazing since I don’t personally know but 2 other bookworms IRL haha! ❤ ❤ ❤

  4. Great post! I’m glad that you’re able to deal with your anxiety through blogging. While I don’t have anxiety, I do relate with some of your experience, especially when it comes to conversing with people online. Blogging has made me come out of my shell a little and I’m hoping that 2017 will bring me out even more! It’s definitely helped me grow as a person too. Blogging has been a great learning experience.
One of the reason I love blogging is because it gives me an avenue to just gush out my love for something and talk to people who love that something too, instead of having to talk someone’s ear off when they’re not as interested about it. Haha.

    1. Thank you ♥ I’m glad it’s been able to help you a little too!! I’m hoping for the same thing next year. Yes, I love that!! It’s so great especially when I don’t really have anyone in real life who cares about these kinda things.

  5. Amazing post, Lauren! I’m also new to blogging as of this year and I relate so much to all the reasons you just listed. I love feeling like a part of this amazing bookish community and getting to know all these amazing people. I love being able to come home after a tough day and talk (or flail or obsess) about my favorite books with people who understand this love, and feel better because of it. I love it because I’m learning new things every day. So many reasons! So thank you also for your amazing blog and for being one of those lovely and welcoming bookish bloggers ❤

  6. This is so awesome, Lauren! I’m so glad you’ve joined the bookish community (which I also didn’t know existed until this year hahaaa) and that we got to meet. I totally feel pretty much all of the reasons that you’ve listed here – it’s helped massively with my anxiety too in similar and slightly different ways. I think the ‘becoming a better person’ one is a really interesting point – I feel like blogging has taught me loads too, but never would have thought of it like that! Amazing post on an amazing blog. Happy end of 2016! ❤ x

  7. Chatting with new people is really my favourite thing about blogging – I actually made a WordPress blog years ago but it got abandoned as quickly as I made it so I’m glad I gave WordPress another chance this year 😀

  10. This is such a brilliant post Lauren. I am so glad you joined the bookish community and we started talking as well. Plus these are all amazing positive that came out of book blogging on WordPress, and some of these are certainly ones I could say are mine as well. The people is a major one for me. I’ve met so many amazing people through WordPress who I honestly count as my friends and it’s one of the highlights of my day talking to everyone on here! 😀 ❤
Also the books are the same for me as well, there are so many I only picked up because of WordPress, favourites of mine I doubt I would have discovered otherwise! I'm forever going to be thankful I joined this community as well! 😀

  12. I could not agree more with everything you’ve said here!! I am so, so grateful that I decided to start blogging this year. It’s so odd because I feel like I just started blogging a month ago, but at the same time, I can’t imagine a time when I wasn’t blogging! It feels like such a big and wonderful part of my life now.

  13. I love blogging for all the same reasons you pointed out but I also love it because people get to know me. I know I’m behind a screen but I try to show my personality through my words 🙂

  14. I also only started blogging this year and I agree that is has been super good to find new ways to appreciate books. I haven’t had much interaction with the bookish community apart from one or two people so any suggestions on how to do this would be appreciated.

  15. Blogging has also helped me become a better person. Through the conversations that we have in the community, I’ve learned so much about social issues, how to use x,y or z thing, what life is like in other countries, and of course, more about books! I’m so glad you’re part of the community, and it’s so good that blogging has changed your life so much! ❤

I’m so glad you started blogging this year because I’m so grateful and blessed to consider you a friend ❤️ I definitely have similar problems when it comes for my anxiety and I still feel like I’m being annoying when I tweet with people but slowly but surely it’s getting better.

  18. OMG This post was written for me. I can relate to everything. EVERYTHING. I felt so alone with my anxiety so blogging has been an escape, has helped me talk about my issues and realize I was far from the only one whose life was dictated by her anxiety and has spurred me to do things I never thought I’d be capable of, like interviewing an author, contact publishers, take on big projects…. I am grateful for everything the community has brought me. Loved this post, Lauren ❤

  19. awwww! i’m so glad you joined this community and to be able to call you a fellow blogger and friend!❤❤❤
i’m happy to hear that blogging has helped you with your anxiety, even if it is just a bit–that’s a lot! i can definitely relate as, while i don’t have social anxiety, i have diagnosed performance anxiety and blogging helped me a tad with being able to put my work out there and not being a super critical, self destructive perfectionist! i know how scary taking those (admittedly small) steps can be and i’m so happy for you and proud of you!

  20. Ahh I really loved reading this Lauren! 😀 I joined the book blogging community this year too so I totally understand everything you said here. I agree that the people are THE BEST part of the community, not only we got to meet people who share our passion down to its core, they’re also amazing and from all over the world! I mean, that’s cool isn’t it? 😛 I’m also glad to hear that blogging has helped you with your anxiety, that must be so important to you ❤ as for me, I feel like blogging has given me a… sense of purpose? I don't know, it gives me meaningful things to do instead of useless craps I used to did hahaha cheers to a better year ❤

  21. Aw, this is such an uplifting post. 😀

It’s amazing how much interacting with the blogging community can improve and change your life, I totally agree. It’s great to hear that it’s helped with your anxiety, and given you opportunities to safely venture out of your comfort zone. Hopefully this time next year, you’ll have an even longer list of great things that blogging has helped you accomplish!

As much as you’ve benefited from the blogging community, it’s benefited from having you in it. Thanks for all the wonderful reviews and discussions you share with us!

  22. Awww I love this post, Lauren! I’m so glad you joined the bookish community. 💕
Although I was a part of the community via bookstagram I only joined the blogging side this year too. I don’t think I ever realized how big and welcoming it was until I started book blogging. I agree with you about everyone in the bookish community being so amazing. I’ve made so many friends that I would have never met otherwise and I think my life would be boring without all of you. I can relate to you on the anxiety. During my bookstagram years I rarely commented because of it but I know that blogging has helped me immensely. I’m really thankful that not only has the book blogging community expanded my reading horizons but also helped me with my anxiety. I still struggle with certain things but I know that this time last year I would have never been able to do what I do now. 😊

  23. LOVE this. Yes, this community is full of so many amazing folks & I have learned so much as well! I think the main thing that I love about finding this community is that I finally have a place to talk about all the things I love. I don’t have any friends in RL that read or like the same shows & movies as me, so it was refreshing to have a place to go where there are people that do!
