The Original Sims – The Best Author Debut

Caraval Homegoing Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) The Book Thief

Caraval by Stephanie Garber (2017)
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi (2016)
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling (1997)
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (2005)

I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that these are ALL debut books. Everything about them was perfect from the first page and kept my attention the entire time. I love them all so much. I can’t recommend them enough ESPECIALLY HOMEGOING. GO READ THAT BOOK RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!

The Grim Reaper – Saddest Character Death ** MINOR SPOILERS **

The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #5) Allegiant (Divergent, #3) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Harry Potter, #7)

The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and the Olympians #5) by Rick Riordan
Allegiant (Divergent #3) by Veronica Roth
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter #5) & Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Harry Potter #7) by J.K. Rowling

I’m not going to name names, but characters that died in each of these books BROKE ME. I am not and probably never will be okay with a certain character’s fate from the PJO world and every time their name is mentioned I actually shed tears. Unpopular Opinion Alert™ but I was okay with how The Divergent series ended but I was completely heartbroken and cried for 3 days. I know a lot of people have an issue with this series but I suppose it’s like my version of Twilight. It’s what really got me into YA. I read the first 2 books in 3 days and read Allegiant the day it was released. Pretty sure I don’t even need to say anything about the HP books, haha. Order of the Phoenix was the first book that made me cry. 15 year old me went into some serious mourning.

Sims Getting Stuck – A Character that Just Got in the Way

Stealing Snow (Stealing Snow, #1) Batman: The Killing Joke Darkest Hour (The Mediator, #4)

Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige
The Joker in E V E R Y T H I NG

Darkest House (The Mediator #4) by Meg Cabot

EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER IN STEALING SNOW GOT IN THE WAY?????? I DON’T EVEN KNOW HOW I FINISHED IT??????????

This might be another unpopular opinion 💁🏻, but I hate the Joker and not in a way that you’re supposed to hate villains. He makes me sick. Every time I see his face or read his name I get so angry. I need him to stay away from Harley (and me) forever. I can’t believe people find their relationship romantic. He literally physically and emotionally abuses her. HE PUSHED HER OUT A WINDOW??? Like, every time he’s near Harley this is my reaction:

Image result for stay away from her

ALSO PAUL SLATER NEEDS TO GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE. HE MAKES MY SKIN CRAWL. NOBODY WANTS YOU.

Image result for YOU'RE tacky and i hate you

Simlish – A Book with Amazing Writing

The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater

The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater

The writing in these books is so beautiful. I normally have trouble with slow paced books, but the way Maggie wrote I was hanging onto every single word.

Expansion Packs – A Series Where the Books Keep On Getting Better

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series by Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan

I haven’t completed many series, but the books in PJO just keep getting better and better. The Lightening Thief is amazing too, don’t get me wrong, but with each book we meet new characters and Gods and there’s so much character development.

Sim Romance – The Worst Case of Insta-Love

Heartless

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

If insta-love is believable I can deal with it, but this was just Too Much. I couldn’t deal. I didn’t believe in the romance whatsoever. The love interest had no substance either. It felt like he existed purely to be a love interest.

Cheats – A Book That Was Entirely Unrealistic

I don’t really have an answer for this one? It seems more like a contemporary based question which is a genre I kinda avoid so.

Needs Fulfilment – A Character Who Made All the Wrong Decisions

A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1)

Feyre from A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Everyone: Feyre, don’t do the thing!!! YOU WILL DIE!!!!!
Feyre: [does the thing MULTIPLE times]
Me: Image result for stock image reaction

I know this is so many people’s favourite book, but it was not for me.

Error Code 12 – A Series that Started Off Great but Went Downhill from There

mazerunnerseries

The Maze Runner series by James Dashner

I loved the first two books in this series SO MUCH, but then I read The Death Cure 🙃🙃🙃 and it made me wish I never read the series at all. Apparently a lot of people disliked a certain character, but I adored them to pieces and I am forever angry about what happened. Not to mention the way The Death Cure ended was riddiculous. It happened so fast I was like “wait, what?”

The Sims Vortex – A Book/Series that Completely Engrossed You

The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater

The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater

I try not to use the same answer twice, but this series was EVERYTHING. I was so caught up in it. I love the characters; they’re my children. It was so wonderful and magical. I MISS IT SO MUCH. I can not wait for the Ronan series that Maggie’s writing!!

The Mediator Series by Meg Cabot

The Mediator series by Meg Cabot

I STILL HAVEN’T READ REMEMBRANCE YET AND I DON’T KNOW WHY!!!!!! Anyway though, this series was everything to me when I was a teenager and I still love it so much. I pretty much binged the entire series. I normally can’t deal with Paranormal books that are heavy on the romance, but this one is the exception. SUZE + JESSE 4EVER.

Have you ever gone through a The Sims phase?

I hope you’re all having a fantastic day xx

  1. This tag is incredibly relevant to my interests. My life is a constant Sims phase, tbh. I’m the girl that will obsess over it for six months, neglect it for a year, then start playing it again like nothing changed (and nothing has).

Caraval and Homegoing are definitely at the top of my list. Caraval was just so magical that I’m still not over it (or sure any review by me could do it justice) and Homegoing… Woof. I never expected a book could be so powerful. Also, a hearty “HELL YES” to the Joker thing because really HE WAS AN ABUSIVE PILE OF POO AND I HAVE NO CLUE WHY PEOPLE USE JOKERxHARLEY AS #RELATIONSHIPGOALS.

My love for Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle knows no bounds… even though I still need to read The Raven King. All good choices!

    1. Honestly, me! I hadn’t played it all year, but just started again last week like nothing had changed 😅

Yes, so glad you loved those too! I can’t wait for everyone else to read Caraval because it was amazing and Homegoing was one of the most important books I read this year. OH MY GOD I KNOW RIGHT!!? I DON’T GET IT!!??

I love them so much ♥ Ahhh, I hope you enjoy The Raven King! I know a lot of people were a bit disappointed with it, but I thought it was a really fitting ending.

      1. SAME HERE. I’m on Week 2 of the great Return of the Sims with none of the shame.

I really didn’t expect to love Caraval as much as I did. It brought me out of my worst reading slump a few months ago… only to put me back in one because it was just that good. Well played, Stephanie Garber. YES! Like, I really hope Gyasi writes ALL OF THE BOOKS now because she is now an auto-buy author for me.

I’m kind of disappointed about the spoiler I got because it’s literally the ONE THING I didn’t want to happen in The Raven King, but I’m sure Stiefvater handled it with style and grace because she is Maggie Stiefvater and Maggie Stiefvater is a QUEEN when it comes to words.

  2. I felt the same way about Allegiant. I was so broken that I refuse to see the movies. I just couldn’t go through that again. And I completely agree with you about the maze runner. I really enjoyed the first book and then the second was fun but just a bit off. The third was just weird and left me shaking my head.

I’ve tried Sims once but didn’t really get into that much. I love world building games, I should probably try the game again. This was a fun book tag, thanks for sharing.

    1. I haven’t seen any of the movies except Divergent, haha. I don’t think I could ever watch Allegiant either though. Riiight. The second was actually my favourite, but the 3rd ruined everything.

I feel like it’s one of those games that you either love or don’t haha. It can be time consuming, but I get so caught up in it 😅

  3. Oh my god this tag! It makes me want to drop everything I have to do today and play! In the summer I spent a whole week playing, and I haven’t played it since, I need to get back to my family haha!
Great answers! I agree The Raven Cycle was everything ugh it was such a good series, I kinda wished it didn’t end, but at the same time I’m glad it did because I feel more would ruin it. (Does that make sense? 😕)
I also really need to get my hands on the Percy Jackson series, recently I’ve been seeing it everywhere, and there’s been nothing but good words about it!

    1. Haha, yes!!!

Oh my god, yeah, I totally get you!!! It’s like when series drag out for too long so much of what you love gets ruined.

They’re amazing!! Even though they’re a middle grade series they’re something that anyone can enjoy and one of my all time favourites.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yes that’s exactly it! I’m glad the series ended the way it did because otherwise I’m sure I would have hated it!
I’ve been reading a lot of middle grade books recently and they aren’t bad at all, just because of who they are targeted for doesn’t mean anyone can read them, like you said anyone can read them!

  4. I’m totally doing this tag haha Might not get to it for a few weeks, but my Sims-obsessed self can not pass this up haha
I get so excited every time someone says they were okay with how Allegiant ended because ME TOO. And it feels like there are so few people who actually liked it. Even though it was heartbreaking, I felt like it fit her character development really well and just made sense.

    1. Haha, yes!! Can’t wait to see your post when you get to it.

RIGHT!! I didn’t realise it was so unpopular until I joined the bookish community this year. It was devastating, but it just felt like it was what needed to happen. I hate when character deaths don’t have any meaning, but this one definitely did.

  5. I am so tagging myself for this!!!! Sims ❤ I used to watch forever just before my exams and then don't play for months, haha. OMG The Maze Runner. I don't understand how we went from amazingballs to WHATTHEFUCK?!

  6. The Raven Cycle is awesome!! And I’m embarrassed to say that I tried playing The Sims years ago and I just didn’t understand it at all 😛

  7. Ohh this seems like such a fun tag. I don’t play the Sims anymore but I used to love it, and waste plenty of afternoons playing it, when I was younger! I also agree with pretty much all your answers as well. J.K. Rowling is I think the ultimate amazing debut author, and I haven’t read Caraval yet, it’s on my to-read list for this month, I’ve seen nothing but amazing things about it so I can’t wait to get started! 🙂
I definitely agree with you about all the characters in Stealing Snow getting in the way, and about Paul Slater as well. I HATED him so much in the original books and even more in the adult sequel.
And of course I think it’s well known how much I loved The Raven Cycle as well! 😀
Great picks for this tag Lauren.

    1. It was definitely a fun one 😀 Haha, I just started playing last week again for the first time in a year 😀

Right! It’s so crazy that Harry Potter was her first book. I feel like you’re going to LOVE Caraval!

He was the worst. Oh man, haha. I need to Remembrance ASAP!!

It’s the besttttt!! Thanks, Beth ♥

      1. Honestly I’ve been feeling a little tempted recently to pick up the game again myself. I can remember how much fun it was when I first started playing all those years ago! 😀
I hope so, I can’t wait to get started on it!
Definitely read Remembrance ASAP, aside from Paul Slater it is a good book! 😀
        That’s all right! ❤

  8. *sigh*

The Sims are a happy memory for me. I have TS4 and most of the expansion/stuff packs, but I had to uninstall them because my computer isn’t my own and I don’t want to make my mom’s laptop slower than it already is, lol. TS4 is my favorite, though, even if I can wax poetic about Island Paradise in TS3. 😉

Might have to do this tag later, hmm…

  9. First thought: OH MY GOD OH MY GOD THERE’S A SIMS BOOK TAG? 💖💖

Second thought: Gotta calm down before Lauren thinks I’m crazy.

    More thoughts:

    – Asdfghj I too have fallen back into a Sims-shaped hole recently (as recent as last night, in fact, bc I started a new legacy I mean WHAT EVEN IS LIFE).

    – LOL @ Stealing Snow – I think I’ve only read, like, one good review for that book and everyone’s saying the same thing about the characters. 😛

    – The Raven Cycle does have really beautiful writing. I think that’s why I didn’t mind the slow pacing so much, bc the writing makes up for it.

    – Heartless WAS insta-lovey as hell, but it felt kind of like a fairytale to me so the insta-love was sort of expected (I mean all the Disney fairytales are insta-lovey). I think I’ve read worse insta-love, too, but I can’t remember what it was now.

    Like

    1. Haha, YES!!

Noooo. Be un-calm all you want

I JUST STARTED A NEW LEGACY CHALLENGE TOO!!!!

I haven’t seen many good reviews either. It was a really good concept, but the execution was TERRIBLE.

      It’s so magical ♥♥

That is true! I just couldn’t get behind it? I don’t know. I may have just been me because I struggle to make a connection with romance. I could have used The Star-Touched Queen too. That was super insta-lovey too, haha.

      Like

      1. YEEES! Do you have any specific theme/challenge that you’re playing? I’ve always wanted to do an Awesomesauce Legacy Challenge but don’t have enough colourful furniture/hair to do it. 😛

Yeah, I wasn’t that into the romance in TSTQ either – even with the reincarnation plot it was meh. I guess insta-love just isn’t for some people no matter what.

  10. A Sims tag?! This is so cool! Oh my god I need to start playing the Sims again but I fear I’ll never go to work again if I do haha. Great answers, Lauren! Had a chuckle to myself with your comment about Stealing Snow – I literally could not agree more but like you, have absolutely no idea how she managed to make every single character a complete nuisance haha! x

  11. *whispers* I’m pretty sure The Book Thief wasn’t Markus Zusak’s debut. I read an older book of his in high school called I Am The Messenger as well. And I think he has even older books. But yes, The Book Thief is what gave him international fame and deservedly so!

So, I stopped the Divergent series after book 2, but I already know who died and I don’t want to go through it in the books. 😥

    Fun tag! I may play the Sims while I’m on vacation/holiday. :}

    1. Ooops. That’s what I get for blindly trusting a GR list 😅😅 I even knew those books existed because my sister was obsessed The Book Thief and read everything else he wrote.

That was probably a good decision, haha. I still can’t believe I wasn’t spoiled.

  12. I totally agree with you on Maze Runner…I hated the series by the end. I was like, “what? Huh? But…wait…what?” That was me.
I also feel you with Stealing Snow…no one was likable. The writing was subpar. The book was too choppy. Ugh. I need to make a list of the worst books ever. 😉

  13. I read Allegiant the day it was released as well & while I’m ok with the death of the character, I just think the way it was executed was a bit of a cop out. I still think the events that led up to this character’s death was a bit ridiculous & it was used more as a shock factor than as a necessarily conclusion to the series xD Also I found the Percy Jackson series ultra cheap here in Vietnam so I decided what the hell, I’m finally gonna try it & see what all the hype is about xD Also – you wouldn’t believe this, but I’ve read 3 different opinions on Heartless just in the last hour & now I’m extra confused about whether or not I should give it a shot, since Instalove is one of my most HATED tropes. Ever.

    1. I definitely understand! I think if I reread it now my feelings could change. It was kinda my ‘Twilight’ though, in the sense that it’s what really got me into YA and helped me rediscover my love for reading after Harry Potter so it kinda has this like place in my heart were I’m extremely biased towards it.

AHHH YESSSS!!! I hope you enjoy them 😀 It’s such a brilliant series.

Haha, oh man. I really didn’t like it that much. A lot of people loved it though so it’s kinda hard to say? Like some people said the romance felt more fairtytale-romance to them instead of instalove, but I didn’t get that vibe. It was also extremely slow. The only thing I liked was the setting.
