The Month of Slumps and Binging Netflix // October Wrap Up

monthly-wrap-ups

As if it’s November? How on Earth.

Just wanna say a quick hello to all my new followers. Thank you so much for your support. I hope you enjoy taking this blogging journey with me โ™ฅ

me-me-me

So…. October was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I was excited becauseย of Halloween, my Halloween readathon and because I was supposed to be seeing Mayday Parade. Whilst the first two on the list were a success,ย I unfortunately got sick on the day I was supposed to travel down to see Mayday Parade and I couldn’t attend. It was pretty soul crushing. However, the month wasn’t a complete write-off because I did still get the chance to see another band – With Confidence. I managed to meet them after the show and it was definitely worth waiting in the rain for half an hour (ironically their album is called Better Weather ๐Ÿ˜…). They’re the nicest guys ever.

That was pretty much it for October. I lead an exciting life…. Haha! I did a fair bit of shopping in Perth, but mostly on clothes and food ๐Ÿ˜‚. We recently got a H&M store and because I’d never been there before I had to go check it out. I grabbed a bunch of clothes, went to try them on because I just presumed they wouldn’t fit … but they ALL did. So…. I bought everything.

I had to start with the most exciting book I received this month:ย THE HAMILTOME!ย I am eternally grateful to Hachette Australia for sending me this copy. I actually recieved this on the day that I was supposed to see Mayday Parade so it was a nice little pick me up. No photos (especially my dodgy ones) will ever do this book justice. It’s absolutely stunning. I’m in love with the deckled edges. I’m taking my time reading it and am listening to the song whilst reading the annotations about it and it’s making the experience amazing. I’m planning on doing a whole Hamilton appreciation post once I’ve finished it.

I bought the next two books. Well, technically I boughtย The Callย and my aunt was super nice and boughtย The Hammer of Thorย for me. I’ve been interested in The Callย since I heard a few BookTubers talk about it and then I read Esther @ Chapter Adventures review and it made me even more interested. Once I saw the cover I was sold. I’ve been eagerly anticipatingย The Hammer of Thorย ever since I finishedย The Sword of Summerย and so far I am absolutely loving it. There’s also a transgender side character with a pretty important role!ย ย

Covers = Goodreads

I’d normally separate these into ratings, but I read hardly anything this month so I’ll just group them in the order I read them! Most of these I read for the Halloween Read-A-Thon that I hosted soย I won’t go into too much detail again because it’s all in my wrap up post.

The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapiย the-creeper-man-by-dawn-kurtagichย the-girl-from-the-well-by-rin-chupecoย bird-box-by-josh-malerman

The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi (โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…) – I read this for the Banned Books readathon and it’s the reason why I didn’t get to ANY other book on my TBR. It took me so long to read this and I’m not sure why. I always feel weird rating memoirs because this isย someone’s life but I did enjoy the first part a lot more. This was an extremely important read . I ignorantly didn’t know much about the topics discussed in this book and I feel a lot more informed now.

The Creeper Man by Dawn Kurtagich (โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…)I won’t go over this too much again. You can see my review here. It was an atmospheric and poetic creepy read.

The Girl from the Well by Rin Chupeco (โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…)This actually creeped me out a little! I loved the Japanese culture and legends that were discussed.

Bird Box by Josh Malermanย (โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…)Super unique take on the wholeย End of the World trope. The 2nd half of the book made me pretty anxious.

the-haunting-of-sunshine-girl-by-paige-mckenzieย the-woods-vol-3-new-london-by-james-tynion-iv

Carrie by Stephen Kingย (โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…)I read my first ever Stephen King book and loved it! I can’t wait to read more.ย ย

The Woods, Vol 1: The Arrow & Vol 2: The Swarm by James Tynion IVย (โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…)Imagine The 100 taking place in the Upside Down and it’s all set on an Alien Moon. Throw in incredible and diverse characters. These were hands down my favourite reads of the month.

The Haunting of Sunshine Girl by Paige McKenzie (โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…) –ย This ended up beig more fantasy-paranormal than horror-paranormal, but it was a fun and quick read!

The Woods, Vol 3: New London by James Tynion IVย (โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…)I didn’t love this volume as much as the first two, but it was still AMAZING and I can’t wait to read volume 4. ย

When I was sickย I was stuck in bed for 3 days so I ended up binging Netflix for the first in almost a year. I ended up watching a season of the following shows:

brooklyn-nine-nineย dont-trust-the-b-in-apt-23ย haters-back-offย stranger-things

I can’t express how much I’m in love withย Stranger Things. I need season 2 right now. The characters are so important to me. I love how 80s it is too. The musical scores and cinemotography are so good.ย Haters Back Offย was so much serious than I thought it was going to be. I may have cried. Colleen is so talented.ย Don’t Trust the B in Apt 23ย was AMAZING and I love Krysten Ritter. I also finished season 3 ofย Brooklyn Nine-Nineย and like always, it continues to be absolutely amazing and for a comedy addresses some pretty serious issues.

As for music, here’s some songs I’ve been obsessing over this month:

Blogging definitely got put in the back burner this month. I have a post about this, but I was definitely suffering (and still kind of am) suffering from a blogging burn out so I’m trying to not put too much presure on myself. I did put up a few posts that I’m happy with though!

There should hopefully be a few fun surprises coming this month. So keep an eye out for thoseย ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™Š

Being away messed with my blogging a lot and I’m really hoping to make November more consistent. Thanks for sticking with me โ™ฅ. I appreciate every single one of you so much.

  1. Oh man, you’ve shared so many new things for me to investigate. *Rubs hands together.*

Hope November treats you even better than October did, and you continue not to stress yourself overmuch about the blog. =)

  2. Aahh, your copy of The Call is gorgeous! I really hope you enjoy it ๐Ÿ˜ŠAnd I have to admit I’m super jealous of the Hamiltome, I hope to be able to buy it one day! I never finished watching Krysten’s show, but ever since Jessica Jones, I want to see all her work ๐Ÿ˜ All the shows you mentioned are awesome. I have yet to check Colleen’s, but it seems to be awesome. Here’s for an awesome November ๐Ÿ™Œ

    1. Ahh, thank you and right! It’s hard to tell in the photo but there’s almost like a Catacombs background I love it. I can’t wait to read it. I really, really hope you can get the Hamiltome soon. I can’t believe I was lucky enough to get it sent to me for review.

I’m dying for season 2 of Jessica Jones. And Haters Back Off was awesome. It had a lot of silly humour, but there was a lot of serious aspects too.

      Thanks, Esther โ™ฅ

  3. I completely forgot about The Hammer of Thor! *GASPPSSSS* *pulls up Amazon* lol. “a transgender side character with an important role” = YES!!! can’t wait to get to this one since I enjoyed all the laughs in The Sword of Summer. The Woods is def going to be the next Graphic Novel I pick up, I’ve just heard too many amazing things about this one. I watched Stranger Things over the course of 1 week every day after work & haven’t been the same ever since. Winona is back & proving once again that she’s one talented actress, LOVED IT! I was right there with you during the month of October with a major blogging slump. I’m hoping & aiming for a better November ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. I’ve put it on hold at the moment because GEMINA, but I was about 40% through and it’s even better than Sword of Summer. The Woods was soooo good. I hope you enjoy it ๐Ÿ˜Š

Oh my god right. I need season 2 right now. I feel so empty without it, haha. Winona was amazing. All her scenes were so intense.

Same. I feel a bit better about it already so hopefully we both have a good month!! โ™ฅ

      1. Yes! To a better blogging November ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ lol Gemina sucked me in smh SOOO good! I’m gonna have to get on my Hammer Of Thor asap lol. I’ve had a love for Winona ever since Beetlejuice & have been rooting for her return. I’m the gal in the room whenever she was exposed for bad behavior on the news who yelled “YOU LEAVE WINONA ALONE!!!” So yea, I’m good & ready for her to kill it in season 2. I figured you would love this show with all its creep factor & paranormal happenings ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. We read the call as a part of our ya bookclub at Dymocks. We also read nightfall and crooked kingdom! I’m looking forward to what you think of the call! It definitely caused a lot of debate. Ah stranger things… I need to get to it one of these days. I’ve been a bit slumpy with my blog as well so I know how you feel but your blog definitely has more interaction than mine so I can get how much more stressful a break may be. Enjoy November! Remember Gilmore girls is coming soon ๐Ÿ˜Š

  7. Sounds like a bit of a mixed October for you Lauren. It sucks you were too ill to make it to the Mayday parade but I guess seeing and meeting With Confidence made up for it a little right? It seems like you had an amazing time. ๐Ÿ˜€
You also managed to get through some amazing books, and all with great ratings so I guess it was quality over quantity this month right? Hopefully next month will be better for you blogging wise.
Ohh I need to get started on Stranger Things. I have a list of TV shows a mile long I need to get around to watching but I’ve heard so many amazing things about Stranger Things I guess I should move it to the top of my to-watch list! Also Brooklyn Nine-Nine is amazing! It is my favourite comedy show to date and I am loving the fourth season at the moment. Do you plan to start that soon?

    1. It had a lot of downs, but it definitely ended on a high note when I saw With Confidence ๐Ÿ˜€

Yes! It was nice after last month were I had some not so great reads. Thank you โ™ฅ I feel more motivated already so hopefully that’s a good sign!!

Ahh yes. Stranger Things is AMAZING. I absolutely love it. I’m so glad you love B99 too! I actually did start making progress on season 4. I watched all the available episodes at the time, but then kinda got distracted so I’m behind again, haha. But what I saw was amazing like always.

      1. Maybe the fact that your month ended on a high spells good things for you in November! ๐Ÿ™‚
That’s all right, and I know that feeling. The books I got through this month have become some of my all-time favourites so I was glad I finally got around to them!
I need to start it soon then, and i was a little behind on Brooklyn Nine-Nine when it first started airing but this season has been so amazing, I can’t wait for the next episode! ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. You call that barely reading anything this month?! That’s a good month for me! haha I wasn’t a huge fan of The Woods when I read it, but now that you described it the way you did… I’m gonna have to reread it and think of it that way haha. Glad to have you back love bug! โค

    1. Hahahaha ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™ˆ besides Persepolis they were all pretty short reads so. I just had an instant connection with the characters when I read The Woods. It’s kinda like The Raven Cycle where I know it’s not perfect, but I love the characters so much that I don’t care about anything else ๐Ÿ˜‚. If you decide to reread it I hope it works out better for you this time. Thank you โ™ฅโ™ฅ It’s good to be back ๐Ÿ˜€

  9. I’m with you on wanting a second season of Strangers Things ASAP. I actually want to binge rewatch the whole season. It’s such a fantastic show. I had a bit of blogger burnout as well which combined with a terrible reading slump. Here’s to hoping November is better for the both of us! ๐Ÿ˜Š

    1. I can’t wait!!! I need answers!!! I really want to rewatch it too, but it’s so hard trying to fit in TV in with blogging/reading/real life haha. I sooo wish there were more hours in the day!! And ughh sorry you experience the slump/burnout too ๐Ÿ˜” Here’s to a (hopefully) much better November!!

  10. I just finished binge-watching Stranger Things last night and it was AMAZING. I’m so glad they didn’t end it on a total cliffhanger though, otherwise I would be gong crazy. Still, there was enough of a hint of monster problems to come that I am really looking forward to season 2.

  11. Great post! My October was pretty great, though there was this one thing that school that happened with my classmates (There are only twelve people in my grade, it’s super small), so that really sucked. I only read four books, too. I’ve noticed that every year, I always get in a really bad slump in the fall but end up getting out of it around December. So, hopefully I’m out of it soon. That’s so cool you got to meet the members of the band though! It sounds like it would have been a lot of fun! ๐Ÿ™‚
