In Which Post Concert Depression Melts My Brain // August Wrap Up

Monthly Wrap Ups

Hello beautiful blogger babes! It feels like forever since I’ve made a post. Sorry about the unplanned mini hiatus! I went away on Sunday to my capital city to see my favourite band, Pierce The Veil, play. I was fortunate enough to see my favourite song in the entire world “Hold On Till May” live. I am suffering from the worst post concert depression I’ve ever experienced. It’s completely melted my brain. I even left my Kindle behind at my Aunts and I’m lost without it. I have an old Samsung Tab that I’m using as back up, but it’s not the same. I arrived home on Thursday and haven’t wanted to do ANYTHING. I’ve been trying to get back into blogging, but all I wanted to do was watch the videos and look at the photos I took. Saying I love Pierce The Veil is an understatement. They changed my life and seeing them live was the most amazing experience in the world. If you want to know how much live music means to me I will direct you to this INCREDIBLE post here, written by my favourite person ever (she gets it ♥). I was lucky enough to meet 2 of the members, (Vic and Jaime) after the show (I look awful because I cried a million times and was in the mosh pit 🤘🏻). I miss them SO much.

If you’re into post-hardcore music or are just up to trying new music you can listen to all their songs on Spotify! It’s honestly incredible.

Besides seeing Pierce The Veil all I really did this month was get too emotionally invested in the Olympics 😅

Of course, because I was in Perth I used my last free day to hit the city to try and find some books. I couldn’t get many because I had to make sure my luggage didn’t go over the weight limit and I only had one bag. I did manage to get 2 books that I’m SUUUUPER excited for!

Blog wise – I posted my first Design Post and everyone was SO nice! It was super overwhelming. I’m definitely hoping to post more soon. As well as the original tag I’m working on.

Is a wrap up post even a wrap up post if I don’t mention how fast time is going? I’m also quite sad because winter is officially over in Australia. Now I’m going to have to go back to weeks of 42-47C (107-114F) and DO NOT WANT.

I had a relatively small haul/reading month which is why this post is combined!

BOOKS I HAULED

IMG_4980

Of course I bought Harry Potter and the Cursed Child! I was really happy that Target had this for $25. In Australia, that’s so cheap for a hardcover! It’s such a beautiful book. I definitely had a lot of mixed reactions when I read it last month. It was a really magical experience though.

The other three books I bought this month were

I bought Nerve here, but I bought Black & Nevernight from Big W (Yay for cheap books!). I was so excited to find them since my Target store didn’t have them. Black and Nevernight are both #OzYA and Nerve was recently adapted as a movie. I actually hadn’t even heard of it, which really surprised me because it’s a thriller and YA thrillers are my FAVOURITE! Black is also a thriller and I’m sure EVERYONE knows what Nevernight is about 😉 I can’t wait to read all of these! I’m probably being bias here too, but I love this edition of Nevernight so much more than the US one! Sorry 🙈

BOOKS I READ

I read 9 books this month (which again thanks to my love for graphic novels and short books sounds way more impressive than what it is, haha). I was in a slump for most of August. I read nearly all of these books during the first half of the month. It’s also safe to say that I failed ARC August spectacularly 😂 I only managed to read 2 ARCs. I’m still battling on okay with #ReadThemAllThon! My Gastly is now a Haunter!!  And I completed 3 badges.

My favourite reads of this month were: Saga Vol 2, Living Dead Girl, Last Seen Leaving and The Merciless II

Covers = My Review and/or Goodreads

2 STARS

Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige

Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige – I received an ARC of this via Netgalley. I am really sad to say that I did not like this book. The concept had so much potential, but once a Love Square started I knew this book was going to be a struggle to get through. The interesting parts were overshadowed by tropes and instalove. There were literally 3 love interests in this story. THREE. If it wasn’t a review book I think it may have been my first ever DNF.

4 STARS

Harley Quinn Preludes and Knock-Knock Jokes by Karl Kesel For Magnus Chase Hotel Valhalla Guide to the Norse Worlds by Rick Riordan The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling

Harley Quinn, Vol 1: Preludes and Knock Knock Jokes by Karl Kressel – Whilst I didn’t enjoy this as much as I enjoy The New 52 Harley it was still really fun and Harley will always be one of my favourite characters ever.

For Magnus Chase: Hotel Valhalla Guide to the Norse Worlds by Rick Riordan – I read this on my bus trip down to Perth. It’s a companion book for the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series. It was a fun and quick read! Perfect to read while you’re travelling. I loved learning more about Norse mythology and there were cool hints dropped about the next book in the series.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling – So after reading The Cursed Child it left me with the BIGGEST book hangover and all I wanted to do was drown myself in Harry Potter. I’ve never read this short stories collection so I figured it was the perfect time. Whilst it didn’t completely cure my hangover the stories were all really great. The Tale of the Three Brothers will forever be a favourite and I loved The Warlock’s Hairy Heart (what a strange sentence 😅) because it was a lot darker than I was expecting!

Hold Your Own by Kate Tempest The Merciless II by Danielle Vega

Hold Your Own by Kate Tempest – This is a collection of poetry based on the Greek myth of Tiresias. This isn’t the usual kind of poetry that I read, but I still really enjoyed it. I love anything to do with Greek mythology and I actually hadn’t heard of Tiresias before so this was really interesting! I definitely recommend it if you’re a poetry and/or Greek mythology fan.

The Merciless II by Danielle Vega The Merciless is one of my favourite horror books and books in general so I was excited but nervous when I heard a sequel was happening. I LOVED this though! I did have a couple of issues, but overall it was exactly what I needed. I feel like I’ve been neglecting my love of horror lately so I can read current releases and popular series I haven’t gotten to and this reminded me that it’s my favourite genre for a reason. I felt really inspired after I read it and even wrote a few horror scenes for stories that will never leave my hard drive ever.

5 STARS

Last Seen Leaving by Caleb Roehrig Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott Saga Volume 2 by Brian K. Vaughan

Last Seen Leaving by Caleb Roehrig – I recieved an ARC of this book via Netgalley and I LOVED IT! Being a YA thriller I realise it may not be everyone’s thing, but I devoured it. There were diverse characters and LGBT+ themes. The twists and turns were BRILLIANT. I thought I had everything figured out, but nope. THERE WERE NO ABSENT PARENTS. I hate comparing books, but I feel like this got everything right that, for me – personally, Gone Girl didn’t.

Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott – I actually posted a review for this (surprise!) so I won’t go into it too much again. It was one of the hardest books I’ve ever had to read though. It covers a lot of difficult subjects in an extremely respectful and realistic manner.

Saga Vol 2 by Brian K. Vaughan (writer) & Fiona Staples (artist) – Saga is becoming one of my favourite comic series ever. It’s so incredibly unique and the art work is STUNNING. This volume made me laugh and cry. I can’t wait to see what happens in volume 3!

I’m not sure how my next month of reading will go considering my Kindle predicament as I really prefer reading ebooks – even if I have a physical copy. Maybe it’ll help get through my physical TBR though.

I’d love to hear the thoughts you have of any of these books!

Feel free to link to your wrap up/haul posts so I can drop by.

I hope you all had a fantastic August and have an even better September xx

  1. I’ve seen a few bloggers now who have said that Stealing Snow wasn’t very good. It’s so disappointing because it really seemed like it had a lot of potential to be a great story. :/
I’m very glad to see that you liked Last Seen Leaving though. I’m really looking forward to its release!

  2. I definitely going to check that band!! you look so cuuute is the photo! :’)
omg, it will be so hot where you live. In my country (Lithuania) summer will end soon. But it’s not THAT hot as in your country. It’s rarely gets to 30C which is even to hot for me, haha. 😀
25$..that’s so expensive. For me 12 euros are even much for a book, but 25$..ohh, that would be so sad.

Btw, great post Lauren! I really like the layout of this post! ☺

    1. Aw, yay! I hope you like them. Australian summers are the worst!

Paperbacks in Australia are normally anywhere from $12-19, but hardcovers are usually $25+ unless they’re on sale or used. It’s why I only have like a few hardbacks on my shelf because I can’t justify the price haha. I had to make an exception for Harry Potter though.

      Thanks so much ♥

  3. I’m glad for you to be able to see your favorite band. Music always have a way of helping us to get through tough times as well as great times. I’m in the United States, and I understand how you feel about the heat. I am ready for the Fall and wish Fall is all year around weather around here.

$25 for a book?! Wow. I wonder why a hardcover book is so expensive over there? I love, love, LOVE Saga. I wonder how many volumes it will have.

As for the The Tales of Beedle the Bard; I love that cover! It’s so beautiful!

    1. Thank you! And yes it really does ♥ So jealous that you guys are getting to experience Autumn, haha. That’s definitely my favourite season.

It’s pretty rare to get hardcovers here as well and unless they’re on sale/used they’re not normally under $25. It’s why 90% of my books are paperbacks, haha.

Right! It’s the Kindle edition, but I’d love it in a physical format.

  4. Yay Pierce the Veil! 😀 I’ve never seen them headline their own show but I’ve seen them at Warped Tour twice. It’s a dream of mine to see them for a full set! I bet they were amazing! I remember the first time I saw them I screamed so hard I almost puked, it was definitely good times! 😀 That’s so lucky you got to meet & take photos with two of them! I met them at Warped but it was like a 5 second thing they sign something and leave, I’m sure your meeting was better! 🙂

    1. Ahh, I’m so jealous that you’ve been to Warped! That’s pretty much a dream of mine, haha. Their set was absolutely amazing though. And aw! It was great being able to meet them after the show and have a conversation (and hugs 😍). I definitely feel very lucky. I hope you get to see them headline soon!

      1. Thank you, one day! Hopefully you get to go to Warped too!
Ugh you got a hug, that is on my bucketlist haha, I was so speechless when I met them that all I could do was smile really big and give the thumbs up- Vic laughed at me, and that has made me very happy- just thinking about it brings a smile to my face!

  5. Nice wrap-up! The Tales of Beedle the Bard is on my wishlist, I had no idea that Hotel Valhalla Guide to the Norse Worlds existed so thank you bunches! Saga is AMAZING, I’m all caught up & in need of the next graphic installment but that’s going to be a while. Enjoy them! 🙂

  6. Wow that concert sounds incredible, and it sounds like you had an amazing time as well, beyond amazing actually!
I think I will be really shocked if I don’t see The Cursed Child on people’s book hauls for this month, it seems like that book that everyone pre-ordered as soon as it was announced!
I’m going to finished (well re-start and finish) Stealing Snow this week but based on the fact that there is a love square means it’s going to be a book I’m not too keen on, I can’t say I loved what I’ve read so far (I already know who the three love interests are and I’m not really impressed with any of them you know!) but at least there were other books you read this month you enjoyed more!
Great recap Lauren, and great haul for this month as well! 😀

    1. Thanks, Beth! It was amazing!!

Haha, same! I think just about everyone read and bought it 😊

I’ll definitely be interested to see what you think of Stealing Snow! It’s a shame because there were some really interesting concepts, but it was way overshadowed by the love square and annoying tropes.

      1. Yep. If people haven’t read it then, like me, they’ve at least got it on their bookshelves!
I’m hopeful I’ll enjoy it a little bit at least but the love square is kind of putting me off a little! It does sound like a great concept so maybe that will eventually come through you know! 🙂

  7. Looks like you had an awesome month! And look at you posing with rhe band you love! Awesome!
I love your trainer card. I was lucky Aimal offered to make mine, but yours is adorable. 😉🙌
Keep on truckin’! Sept will be even better!
(A lot of people gave Stealing Snow a low rating…I have to read it to see why!)
Love how you were able to embed Spotify and your Instagram pic! All in all, a beatiful post!

  8. This seems to see a pretty great month for you and I’m happy to see you got really excited to see your favorite band! 😀 sounds so FUN! And I totally agree with you on that Nevernight cover, so much prettier! ❤ I'm planning to order it soon, in that exact same cover 😛 I've also heard several negative reviews on Stealing Snow. Too bad you didn't enjoy it, but at least it was free right? 😉 have a great September!

    1. Haha, yes! It was definitely one of the better months for me 😊 Ooh yay that you’re getting Nevernight! I started it and I love it so much already!! And haha that’s definitely true with Stealing Snow! It’s a shame though because there were some interesting concets. Oh well!! Thanks so much Puput, you too ♥♥

  9. Sounds like a pretty great month, Lauren, so happy you got to see (and meet) your favorite band! I totally understand the post concert depression, there is no other feeling in the world that quite compares to a super great live show of a band that means the world to you and it’s not easy to have to go back to the real world after that. I read the post you linked and it was described beautifully. I used to go to a lot more live shows but now it’s been a year I think and I’m in serious withdrawal 😉
But anyway, onto the books 🙂 I’m also super excited to start Nevernight, I ordered my copy and it should be here soon! Stealing Snow sounded interesting but love squares are so not for me so I think I’ll skip this one. And Saga, I’ve heard so many good things about that one – I don’t really read graphic novels but I’ve been thinking about starting and I feel like this series would be a perfect start 🙂

    1. Thanks so much, Lindsey!! It was definitely one of the best months of the year so far haha 😊 I definitely go to as many shows as I’d like! Before this my last one was in January so I was long overdue for some live music, haha. I hope you get to go to another soon!!

I started Nevernight and it’s sooooo good!! I hope you enjoy it. Yeah, I was really disappointed by Stealing Snow because there was some interesting concepts but it was overshadowed by the bad parts. I definitely recommend Saga if you want to start reading Graphic Novels! It is a little weird at times though and is quite graphic in terms of depicting sex scenes and violence 😅 but if you don’t mind that then I’d definitely say to check it out!!

  10. I’m actually kind of glad that Winter is over, but WOAH that sounds super hot where you are! So many amazing books that you bought, I absolutely LOVED Nevernight one of my favourite books. I’ve seen trailers for Nerve and wonder what that would be like. A shame that Stealing Snow was kind of disappointing! SAGA IS SO GOOD THOUGH isn’t it?!

    Like

    1. Haha, that’s okay! I guess winter where I am is more of a cool-summer? It doesn’t really get below 20-22C here during winter! I’m enjoying Nevernight sooooo much!! I’m obsessed with it. Yeah, I was really disappointed that I didn’t enjoy it because it sounded liked it could have been so good. Saga is AMAZING!! I can’t wait to see what happens.
