This Week’s Theme: Ten Books That Have Been On Your Shelf (Or TBR) From Before You Started Blogging That You STILL Haven’t Read Yet
Are you all ready to judge me? Because the books that I’m about to list here have been on my Goodreads TBR for five years. Yeah, that’s not a typo. You read right. FIVE YEARS. I don’t even have an excuse. Actually yes I do. It’s what happens when you’re a Distracted Mood Reader™ (there’ll be more about that in a future post though). I also want to plead my case by saying I didn’t read anything for 2 years. I’m behind okay.
There are definitely more than 10 books on my TBR that have been there for way too long, but these are ones that I’m honestly so mad at myself for not having read yet.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins – Yeah, I haven’t finished The Hunger Games series. I read the first book in a day and loved it so much that I went straight back out and bought the next two. Then I got spoiled for EVERYTHING that happened on Tumblr and since then have had no real desire to pick up the books. I want to finish them though. I just don’t know when.
Delirium by Lauren Oliver – Until I read Replica last month I’d never read a Lauren Oliver book. This book and Pandemonium have been on my bookshelf for SO long. I loved Replica so it’s definitely inspired me to actually hurry up and read this.
Tomorrow, When the War Began by John Marsden – This is an Australian classic that I somehow missed because I’ve never read it. I love the concept and even though it might no seem original anymore I’m guessing when it was published it was pretty unique. I’ve seen the movie and really enjoyed that and I really want to watch the ABC series. I want to try and get to this before the end of the year!
Unwind by Neal Shusterman – I can’t believe I haven’t read this because it’s a sci-fi that’s all about children’s organs being transplanted to different donors or something. I don’t know. It just sounds creepy as hell and I need to read it.
The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson – Jack the Ripper, London AND GHOSTS? Why HAVEN’T I READ THIS YET? I remember being so excited when I added it to my TBR. Yet here I am five years later still having not read it.
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson – I don’t really know much about this book other than it deals with a girl who was raped. It seems like it’s going to be a difficult, but really important read.
Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill – Despite horror being my favourite genre, I’ve NEVER read an adult fiction horror book. I’ve had this forever though and it’s one of my best friend’s favourite books (which is why I bought it) and I did actually start reading it and really enjoyed it, but then life got in the way and I haven’t picked it back up. Since I’m reading a lot more adult fiction now I’m hoping I’ll get to it soon!!
The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides – Another book I can’t believe I haven’t read. I absolutely loved the movie and this book has one of my favourite quotes ever: “Basically what we have here is a dreamer. Somebody out of touch with reality. When she jumped, she probably thought she’d fly.” It’s relatively short too. READ THIS BOOK, LAUREN!
A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket – I’m really sad that I missed out on reading this as a child. I was honestly too focused on Harry Potter in my early teen years. I didn’t even bother seeing what other books were out there. I’m still excited to get to it though. I loved the movie and I can’t wait for the Netflix series!
It’s Kind of A Funny Story by Ned Vizzini – Yet again another book that I can’t believe I haven’t read yet. I think I’ve been putting this off for the same reason I keep putting All the Bright Places, Girl Interrupted and Prozac Nation off though. I know it’s going to hit me really hard because it deals with mental illness. It’s definitely going to be an important read though and even more so considering that Ned Vizzini sadly committed suicide in 2013.
What book has been on your TBR the longest? Which one of these should I read first? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I haven’t read A Series of Unfortunate Events either! I do plan to eventually but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. I might wait until after the show comes out on Netflix though.

I totally get what it means to be a distracted mood reader.
Darn! You got spoiled for *everything* that happened in the hunger games trilogy?
This is just cruel!
No wonder you can’t bring yourself to read the next two books.
The exact same thing happened to me with a different trilogy. It’s horrible. It compleltely ruins your desire to read the books.
Personally speaking, the hunger games book one is the best – and you already read it, so… (:
I read Delirium. And while I did enjoy it, I didn’t love it enough to want to read the next book.
I also haven’t read anything else by Lauren Oliver, but… maybe I should try Replica (?).
I hope you’ll enjoy Delirium if you’ll ever get to it.
Ohh, I heard about Tomorrow When the War Began! About the books, TV show and movie.
I really-really want to try it out.
I’m just not sure yet where to begin. The books? The movie? The TV show?

I read a sample of Unwind a long time ago.
I remember thinking it was interesting but not enough for me to want to buy the book.

Unwind is one of those books that’s also been on my TBR for ages. But I keep getting distracted by shiny new things. The Virgin Suicides sounds very good! I’ve actually never seen the movie either (*shame*).
I read Delirium and really loved it. I know it has some mixed review (especially book 2+3), but I loved it and Lauren Oliver’s writing.
I’m sorry you got spoiled about the rest of The Hunger Games, that’s really such a pity when that happens! Catching Fire was my favorite of the trilogy so I do still hope you’ll get to it someday.

Ahhh I love A Series of Unfrotunate Events!!😄 Even now as an adult reader. It’s much more complex than the film, definitely worth giving a go X

Delirium and Unwind are my votes for first reads. I loved both, and they are so different. But Unwind will suck you in until you read all of them…and there’s four or five now. And Delirium has three. So it depends on what you prefer first…some dystopian romance or dystopian horror. 😉

I loved The Series of Unfortunate Events as a kid!! I can totally relate though, there are so many books on my shelves or on my TBR list that I just haven’t picked up yet, one of those being Harry Potter…

I hope you enjoy a Series of Unfortunate Events, although I re-read it as an adult & it was a lot different than when I read it as a kid. I looked back and wondered why I loved it so much haha! I can’t wait for the Netflix series either! 🙂

Oooh please read The Unwind series, it’s SO good and creepy! I binge-read them all in about a week, they were so addictive! I’ve never read A Series of Unfortunate Events either, but I love the film – I really need to pick these books up soon!

Oh I get the feeling about being spoiled, and therefore not wanting to read the rest of the series. It kinds of takes off the pleasure now doesn’t it 😦

Delirium has been on my TBR for quite some time now but the truth is that i’ll probably read Replica before I read Delirium lol. I’m also a mood reader & can’t help it. I just added Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill a few weeks ago. I’d really love to finally get around to reading the Falling kingdom series, I have the first 3 books smh. Great Top 10! 🙂

Oh nice! The only one that was on my radar that I’ve read is The Name of the Star! Actually just got caught up in that series earlier this year and am left floundering! Can’t figure out if there is going to be a book 4 or not because it certainly ended with some cliffhangers (book 3 that is)!

A few of these have been on my to-read list for a while now as well. I need to read some of Lauren Oliver’s books because I heard amazing things about everything she has released. I was actually tempted to buy one of her series the other day but I held off because there were no more copies of the first book
I also have Unwind on my to-read list and have ever since my friend read and loved it. I ned mroe time to get around to reading all the books I have on my TBR list.
The only two I’ve actually read are A Series of Unfortunate Events (which I LOVED!) and Catching Fire (once again another favourite of mine!) I’m definitely looking forwards to the Netflix TV series for A Series of Unfortunate Events, though I may have to re-read the books before I start watching!

Oh my gosh, Unwind is an incredible book! I haven’t read past the first book simply because I thought it was the perfect stand-alone sci-fi, but I’ve heard great things about the other books. Definitely very dark, dreary and horrifying. It’s a true dystopian!
It’s Kind of a Funny Story was also wonderful. Vizzini suffered from mental illness, and he deals with depression in such a poignant and sensitive way. It’s also incredibly funny – some of the characters had me LOLing. 😀

In my list I mentioned books I’ve had on my TBR for more than 10 years and it was embarrassing lmao. For one, it made me feel old, and secondly, I can’t believe I never picked them up.
I saw the film for Speak without knowing it was a book and I remember having liked it, despite the terrible topic at hand. As I’ve forgotten a lot of what happens in it, I would love to read the book now. I just remember that I loved the connection between the girl and her art teacher.
I had heard of It’s Kind of a Funny Story, but not about the author 😦 I don’t know if I’m ready to read that right now.
The Virgin Suicides was a mesmerizing read and when I ended I didn’t know what to think about it, but then I realized some things made me uncomfortable. I don’t want to spoil it, even though you watched the film, it’s a different experience. It’s great for discussion, so I hope you pick it up and we can get a spoilery talk 😛

Ooooh I’m sure it’s gonna be hard for you to get back on reading The Hunger Games… after all the hype, the movies, and the spoiler you read :’) but Catching Fire is awesome though 😉 I missed out on A Series of Unfortunate Event for THE SAME REASON you did! It was passed around a lot during my junior school year but I was busy reading Harry Potter… no regret, but it’s kinda hard for me to go back to it now hahaha and I hope you read It’s Kind of a Funny Story, it wasn’t that heartbreaking for me. On the other hand, it was… hopeful, compared to All the Bright Places. I also realllyyyy want to read Speak but it’s not available on bookstore 😦

Man, I forgot all about A Series of Unfortunate Events. I don’t know why I’ve never read those before… I really enjoyed the rest of The Hunger Games series. I hope you read it despite everything you’ve read on Tumblr. 😛
I’ve also read “Speak.” It’s short but powerfully written.

WHAT? You haven’t read Catching Fire?? It’s my favorite book in the series! But I guess you probably already know the entire story, so I see the point in not reading it. The movie was pretty good and very faithful adaptation, so if you’ve seen it, you know what happens for the most part. Still, it’s such a good book!
Speak is also very good. But tbh, I don’t think you’ll ever read it because it’s an old book at this point and new, amazing books keep releasing every year. lol
