GUYS. GUYS!!!! IT’S A READATHON THAT HAS CHALLENGES BASED ON POKEMON GYMS!! I have never signed up to something so fast in my entire life.
“Wait. Lauren, haven’t you SPECTACULARLY failed in EVERY Read-A-Thon you’ve attempted?”
Why yes, yes I have. However, that doesn’t stop me because I put zero pressure on myself and I honestly don’t care how little I read. That way readathons stay fun and motivating like they’re supposed to be.
The Pokemon Indigo League #ReadThemAllThon was created by Aentee @ Read at Midnight. It’s running for 3 weeks from 14th August-4th September. You can sign up from any time now to the end of the readathon. There’s 8 challenges and for those of you who are extra competitive Aentee has created a point system involving Pokemon. You choose a Pokemon and gain CP, by how many pages you read and by posting on social media, to evolve it. Aentee’s explains it so much better than I ever could so be sure to check out the sign up post where you will find all the challenges/rules/FAQs. There’s also an amazing spreadsheet here created by Windie @ Geek Apprentice which will help you track your progress!
For this post I’m also going to be using the amazing challenge banners that Aentee has created.
My Pokemon!
Considering I’m a paranormal investigator choosing Gastly seemed really fitting. I love so many of the original Pokemon though it was really hard to choose!
Of course like always these books are subject to change because I don’t know how to TBR. I want to try and get Nevernight soon too so I’ll probably replace something with that!!
This is also up later than I was hoping because of my ankle issues + my psych appointment + the slump I’ve been in. Better late than never is my life motto 😂.
Covers = Goodreads
Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige
This is a retelling of the Snow Queen (not to be confused with Snow White) where she’s in an institute and can’t remember anything about her other life. I’m currently reading this and…. I’m not really a fan. I’m crossing my fingers that it gets better because I really wanted to love it. There’s instalove and I can never get on board with that.
Potential CP: 38
A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab
I feel like this challenge is a free choice for me because WHAT DOESN’T MAKE ME CRY? I love all these characters so much and I have been putting off finishing this for the longest time because I don’t want it to end. So chances are once I’m done there will be tears and lots of them.
Potential CP: 50
I could have (and probably should have) put The Book Thief, Throne of Glass or A Court of Mist and Fury here, but I’m still super intimidated by all of those books (all for completely different reasons 😅) so this is me lowkey putting them off. I’ve been dying to read this for so long though because well it’s V.E. Schwab and the hero/villain dynamic is one of my favourite things EVER.
Potential CP: 36
Three Truths and a Lie by Brent Hartinger
I’ve been in a mini reading slump for a couple of months now and then I read The Merciless II and Last Seen Leaving and it pulled me right out of it. I am on a horror/thriller kick right now so I want to keep going with that because those books do what romance-contemporaries do for most people. This is about a group of friends having a party in the woods. One of the friends is lying and apparently someone isn’t going to live to find out who it is. Two of the main characters are gay so I’m hoping it’s good representation.
Potential CP: 27
Saga Vol, 2 by Brian K. Vaughan (writer) & Fiona Staples (art)
I don’t do romance. I mean, I don’t mind if there’s a bit but I can’t deal when it’s the main plot. Being aromantic it’s just not something I can really connect to. Anyway, choosing Saga might be cheating but the main characters are married and are literally running for their lives across the universe so they can be together. That’s pretty epic, right? It’s a comic too so I’ll be able to read it quickly and there’s a ton of sci-fi elements so it’s not solely romance.
Potential CP: 16
Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics
I’ve been wanting to read this for a while now so I decided a readathon would be good motivation! It’s a historical about a family moving to an isolated cabin. They arrive to discover the inside covered in blood. There’s weird and evil stuff happening which are my two favourite things.
Potential CP: 23
My Sister Rosa by Justine Larbalestier
There’s red ON the cover. That counts, right? Okay. Cool. I’ve been dying to read this for so long and I have NO IDEA why I haven’t because it sounds like it’ll be exactly my type of book. It’s about a guy who’s little sister is a psychopath. I’m obsessed with the psychology behind evil kids so I’m beyond excited to read this. Justine is also an Australian author so!! Yay!!
Potential CP: 39
This is another book that’s been on my TBR forever. The world was hit with a deadly illness and most people who were infected died. The children who survived were left with strange markings and possible abilities. There’s two groups that are trying to find all the kids with powers – or The Young Elites – and it just sounds really interesting. I love dystopians and I love people with powers. I’m hoping I love this!
Potential CP: 35
Oh my god, this looks like so much fun! 😀
I’m way too scared to join it, but I can at least get all excited about the books and observe from afar (:
Ankle problems + a psych appoitment + a reading slump?
This is just cruel. I hoep you’ll feel better soon, Lauren! And good luck!
As a fellow reader in a reading\blogging\general slump – and someone with some issues of her own ‘^^ – I’m cheering for you.
Wait, wait, wait… Stealing Snow is not about Snow White but about the snow queen?
I didn’t know that!
Ever since it was anounced, I always assumed it was a retelling of snow white :O
Oh no-no-no-no-no… you’re the second person I hear saying they’re not really a fan of Stealing Snow, that they hope it gets better and worst of all… that there is an *insta-love*.
Oh please, no. Anything but insta-love. It’s my greatest nightmare.
And I’ve been looking forward to this book for so long now…
I want to love it 😦
I really-really hope it’ll get better!
Though when insta-love is involved, I usually go insta-hate on the book 😦
The books you chose sound amazing! I haven’t read any of them (yet).
Oh and… you too with Throne of Glass and ACOTAR? I’m just so intimidated by these books that I cannot bring myself to pick them up ‘^^
Ah, I’m so excited for you doing this readathon! 😀

Aw, thanks Zoey ♥♥♥! Readathons are a lot of fun!! You shouldn’t feel nervous if you ever want to participate in one 😊
I thought Stealing Snow was a Snow White retelling too when I first heard of it, but then I found it was the Snow Queen which is what made me really excited for it. I wanted to to love it, but unfortunately it’s still not looking like it’s improving.
So glad I’m not alone, haha. I’ve actually read ACOTAR, but I really wasn’t a fan of it so I’m hesistant to pick up ACOMAF.

I haven’t read any of these other than AGOS (which was really good btw) but the rest of these sound fantastic! I hope you have fun during the readathon! 🙂

Thanks, Kourtni! I’m really enjoying what I’ve read so far. I just can’t bring myself to finish it because I don’t want it to end 😂

Hahaha I fail at all of my readathons too! (The only one I succeeded at was the one where I literally had no guidelines. Really.) I’m participating too, so let’s cross our fingers! XD I haven’t read any of the books on your list except for The Young Elites (which I liked), but a bunch of the other ones are on my TBR!

I’ve seen a lot of this read-a-thon around. I think if I was more into pokemon I’d give it a go as well because I’ve never actually tried a read-a-thon before so I have no clue whether it’s something I’d be able to do or something I’d fail at as well.
Still I hope this one works better for you than the others you’ve taken part in.
I’m currently reading Stealing Snow as well and I’m not really a massive fan of it either. I don’t think I’ve got to the insta-love part yet (unless you’re talking about Bale) but I do have a feeling a kind of love-square is developing and I’m not a fan of that at all!
I hope you really love both A Gathering of Shadows and Vicious, they’re both favourites of mine and amazing books as well in my opinion. I can’t wait to see what you think of them.
And I hope you enjoy The Young Elites as well, I have that book on my to-read list because I really enjoyed what I’ve read of Marie Lu’s Legend series! 😀
Good luck with your read-a-thon Lauren! 🙂

Thanks, Beth!! Even though I’m so bad at readathons I’m so obsessed with them 😂 They’re always a lot of fun though!! I definitely recommend participating in one if there’s one that catches your interest!
Yeah, I was refering to Bale. I guess it’s not technically instalove because it’s pre-established but the backstory felt very instant to me and I just can’t see a connection. I’m 100 pages in now and I am definitely sensing that love square too and I’m so not here for that, haha.
I’m loving AGoS! I just don’t want it to end so I keep putting off finishing it! I’m really excited for The Young Elites too.

Thanks! I checked it out. Looks pretty intense. But I think if I look at my library book haul, I could make it work.
(I couldn’t do the whole points thing, but the fun is in the challenge and relating it to Pokémon!!)

The best thing about readathons is that you can pretty much be as creative as you want and bend the “challenges” to fit your situation 😅 They’re definitely a lot of fun!!

I wasn’t able to join this readathon (this is the saddest thing as it probably is the coolest one everrrr) but I love people who are participating. I’m so glad you’re going for it without pressuring yourself 😀
I added Three Truths and a Lie so fast to my TBR when I read your description. It sounds SO good!!!

Aw, booo!! Hopefully it’ll happen again and you’ll be able to participate! Ooh yay! Hopefully it’s good. It has low-ish ratings on Goodreads, but I always seem to love YA thrillers so fingers crossed.

You have to read Vicious! It’s such an amazing book, that I didn’t put it down once… The Book Thief is also a wonderful read, and I have to say that I actually enjoyed the movie adaptation of it. What a fun tag! And you did such a great job with it as well 🙂

I’m so excited to read it!! It sounds amazing!! Everything I’ve heard about The Book Thief sounds really great too, I’m just intimidated by its size and the fact that it’s historical. i’m hoping to get to it soon! Thank you!
