My Favourite Design Resources // Top Ten Tuesday #16

First of all quick note about my mini absence: on Friday night I was at a paranormal investigation and somehow fell down steps. I’m not even sure how it happened. One minute I was on the steps and the next I was on the ground, haha. I hurt my ankle pretty badly. I didn’t go the hospital because I’m a baby so I bought an ankle strap and have been taking ibuprofen. I’ve only just been able to start walking on it properly. I’ve spent the past 3 days in bed because my foot needed to be elevated or it would ache like crazy. So annoying!! I’m pretty sure I’m back properly now though. Sorry for any of your posts that I’ve missed!

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We’d love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

This Week’s Theme: Top Ten Tuesday REWIND** – go back and do a topic you missed over the years or recently or a topic you really want to revisit.

Obviously, I’m cheating and creating my own theme because 💁🏻

My theme: My Favourite Design Resources (spoiler alert: there’s more than 10)

**Honestly when I read this theme all I could think of was the “rewind” part in “Satisfied”. I keep singing “I REMEMBER THAT NIGHT I JUST MIGHT!!!!! REWIND!!!!”. Anyway.

colors

COOLORS.CO – A website that generates a random colour scheme when you press the spacebar. You can also chose a base colour and create a colour scheme for that. I’m someone who loves to make sure my designs all have complimentary colours so this website helps A LOT! Plus the random schemes can help inspire me to use colours that I don’t normally go for.

COLOR PALETTE FX – This allows you to upload an image and then gives you a colour palette with colours from the image. I know customisation is poor on free accounts, but if you have a paid one this can be really helpful in making sure your header image doesn’t clash with other colours on your blog/site.

TINEYE LABS – You can search for images based on a certain colour(s) [up to five]. All the images are generated from Flickr and are Creative Commons which means you’re free to use them (most require credit to the original owner, which is just something polite to do anyway!).

fonts

DAFONT – I’m sure most people know about this site, but it’s a staple for a reason. There are thousands of free fonts on here with different categories that you can search for certain styles. I remember using this site back when I was in school and it’s awesome to see that it’s still going strong.

BEHANCE – This a design site with a huge range of projects and resources so I definitely recommend exploring it! It’s great to look at for inspiration. I mostly use it for fonts though. Whilst you have to pay for some of them there’s also a huge range of free ones available. Whilst DaFont is great Behance has some really unique and high quality fonts. To make it easy the link takes you to all the free fonts!

FONT FABRIC – Another site with some great unique and high quality fonts! There’s free and paid options available. The link goes to the fonts that are free.

images

(I recently learnt that apparently some people frown upon the use of stock photos in the blogging world? This is kind of ridiculous to me. Yes, we should all try to be creative and learn new skills but it’s not possible for us all to be amazing photographers. My bookstagram is proof enough of that 😂. Stock photos exist FOR A REASON.)

GRATISOGRAPHY – Free high-resolution pictures you can use on your personal and commercial projects. New photos are added weekly.

MAGDELEINE – Hand picked free photos. Some are copyright free, but some require credit back so make sure to check!

MAGDELEINE

UNSPLASH

SUPERFAMOUS – Superfamous images are available under the conditions that you can use the work for your own purposes as long as credit is provided.

UNSPLASH – All photos published on Unsplash are available to use without having to give credit.

misc

CANVA – Whilst I prefer to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, Canva is a great free resource if you want to start learning design. The only reason I feel more comfortable with Adobe is because I’ve been using it for over 7 years and it’s what I used during my Digital Media course. It still confuses me though so don’t feel like you have to know how to use it.

GIMP – This is another free alternative to Photoshop. Unlike Canva, which is online based, it’s a program that you download and install to your computer. Again, GIMP confuses me but I know a lot of people use it and swear by it. Whilst it’s not as advanced as Photoshop you can do more on it than you can on Canva.

FREEPIK – A site that has free vector art, illustrations, icons, PSD and photos. Most resources on Freepik require you to credit back.

I hope you all enjoyed my take on this week’s TTT! There’s a ton of resources that I didn’t include in this post so there’ll probably be a part 2!

Feel free to leave me a link to your own TTT so I can drop by!

I hope you’re all having a fantastic day xx

P.S. Don’t forget to enter my giveaway!

  1. I’m terrible at designs so this post is useful to me, thank you! 🙂 I use canva to create stuff for the blog, because GIMP is a mystery to me, haha!

      1. Thank you for making me feel not a total loser any more ;-). I wish I could do some cool tricks with fonts, especially add some color (I downloaded 4 fonts from one of your sites already but still haven’t ‘opened’ them in any program to see how or what I can do). We’ll get there, in the end 😉

  3. This is super useful Lauren, I have so much love for you posting this! 😍 I use Canva for everything, but the stock photo sites are really handy. 😊 GIMP will forever remain a mystery to me I’m afraid 😂 x

        1. Haha! I think it’s because it’s just what I’ve always used? Like I started getting into web and design stuff when I was 15/16 and nothing like Canva existed back then 😂 I definitely still have a pretty basic knowledge with Photoshop though. There’s so many things on there that I haven’t even touched.

      1. It will be: my friend EC on Goodreads wants to start a publishing company, and she’s really done her research. So design aspects will be essential. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Ah this is going to be so helpful for me. I suck at design and never know of any websites to use when I do want to try make little pictures or headers for my blog, this will be my holy grail!
I wish I was an amazing photographer on instagram and for my blog too but I never got the creative bone in my body!

    1. Aw, I’m sure you’d be great at it 😊 Canva is really useful to practice with!!! I’m definitely not a photographer 😂 and I can’t draw either which is something most designers can do so all the free resources are super useful which is why I have so many of them bookmarked haha.

  5. This is such an amazing topic pick for this week Lauren. I have definitely bookmarked this post for future reference. I don’t use many graphics on my site, and those I do are probably only really simple by comparison, but it is something I want to learn. Also if these are your top ten then I know they’re going to be well worth looking into more! 😀
    Great list! 🙂

  6. Really helpful list! I love downloading fonts and playing around with them, and I ADORE Photoshop. 😃
I’ve been thinking about changing up my blog a bit, so I might come back to this post. 😊

    1. I mostly just pretend I know what I’m doing 🙈🙈 I think one of the best things is to definitely interact with other bloggers! Participating in the weekly memes like Top Ten Tuesday is really helpful too. Link up your post and visit others’ posts. It’s a great way to not only meet new people but to also get your blog out there!

  8. What a great topic!! Seriously, I have never heard of these. I guess I just don’t use anything exciting haha. I do my own book pics and I make my own graphics. Which is why they suck, plus I don’t use anything else in my posts. Am I lame or what? Lol. Hope your ankle feels better ASAP!!

  9. Wait, so are some people looking down on all stock photos?? Or just the dingy looking ones? I use stock photos from Canva and I think they look great! Granted, I’m not an expert in design or aesthetics, but I try not to make the images in my posts hideous. I have Canva to thank for that. I haven’t branched out much beyond it…But I’m not afraid to continue using stock photos, so I’ll check out some of the links you provide and see if I can find some good pics. Thanks!

    1. I can’t find the link to the post I was reading (they were defending stock images too), but apparently some of the ‘big name bloggers’ don’t like it because it means people could potentially be using the same images and not being ‘individual’ and that it’s not technically ‘yours’. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with using stock images! It’s like I can’t draw whatsoever whereas most designers can so I always make use of free vectors/patterns ect. haha!!

I was looking at Canva the other day and they’re great!! That site is a lot more advanced and useful than I realised. It’s great that people have access to it!!

Hopefully you can find something useful! Unsplash is definitely one of my favourites.

  10. This is such a useful post Lauren, I love discovering new resources and you’ve definitely brought some new ones, particularly for fonts and colour matching to my attention. I use Adobe and Gimp (because I’m too cheap to pay for it at home) as well but have recently started using Canva which is brilliant!

    1. Thanks so much, Jeann! GIMP has always been a mystery to me 😂 but it’s so great that free programs like that exist. I was confused by Canva too, but I’ve looked at it recently and you can actually do so much with it! It’s such a great resource.

  11. This is a great post, thank you so much for sharing all of these ressources! 🙂 I mostly use Canva, because I can’t be bothered with Adobe, I can’t afford it and even if I could, I don’t understand a thing about it, despite having classes on Photoshop…. I’d love to be able to do gorgeous designs though 🙂

    1. Thanks, Marie! Yeah, Adobe is definitely pricey and confusing. I only have it because of my Digital Media classes. I only use the basics with Adobe, haha I’m just so used to the way it’s set up. I was looking at Canva the other day and you can actually do so much with it. It’s such a great resource to have. And aw, I love all the designs you use on your blog!!

  12. I tried GIMP once and I was so lost lol I’m too used to Adobe’s tools because I’ve been using the for 10 years… this makes me sound old but I was actually like 13 when I started using Photoshop 😛 Canva is great, I only came to know it this year and I used for quick designs.
OMG people hate stock photos? What even? I can’t photograph even if my life depended on it. I don’t have any talent nor a good camera, so stock photos are my salvation lmao For Public Domain pics my favorite website is Pixabay, but I used two of the ones you mentioned as well!
Great post, I loved the color scheme websites! I never used them because I’m lazy, but they’re actually so helpful that I’m going to try to give them a chance.
All my best to you ankle! I hope it feels good as new soon ❤

    1. GIMP will forever be a mystery to me 😂 I’m also too used to Adobe’s set up. I totally get what you mean! When I tell people I’ve been doing HTML/Design stuff for 13 years they get really confused, but I’ve been interested in all this since I was around 12/13 too! I looked at Canva for the first time a couple of days ago and it’s actually so much more useful than I was expecting. It’s a really great resource!

Yeah? I don’t get it either! Apparently ‘bigger’ bloggers don’t like it because it means too many people can use similar images and because it’s not really ‘yours’, which is so stupid. I’m the worst photographer ever. I can’t draw either (like most designers can) so I’d be lost without free vectors ect. haha.

Thanks ♥♥ I think it’s finally starting to heal up.

  13. Hi! I’d just like to say that between your Newbie 2 Newbie Blogging Tips post and this one, I am loving you right now!
I’m a new blogger and am honestly so confused about basically everything, so your posts help a lot! I do have one question though: What in the world are stock photos? Are they feature images or graphics, or something else entirely?
    Again, great post!

    1. Aww, thank you so much!! That’s so sweet of you to say 💕💕 I’m so glad they were able to help you!!!

Stock photos are basically just photos that people are able to use for whatever they want and for free without worrying about copyright issues. Most times they’ll just be generic images so people can edit them how they want. A lot of people use stock photos for featured images in their blog posts! I find them useful because I have zero photography skills 😂
