Underhyped Books on my TBR That I Need To Read // Top Ten Tuesday #14

ttt

This week’s theme for Top Ten Tuesday is to talk about books we love that have under 2000 ratings on Goodreads, but because I’ve mentioned all those books quiet a lot I decided to showcase some books that are on my TBR instead!

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We’d love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

My Theme: Ten Thirteen Books with Under 2000 Ratings On My TBR That I Need To Read

Don’t judge me. I’m really bad at making decisions.

Covers = Goodreads

Nightfall by Jake Halpern and Peter Kujawinski The Penguin Book of Witches by Katherine Howe The May Queen Murders by Sarah Jude Bodies of Water by V. H. Leslie

Nightfall by Jake Halpern and Peter Kujawinksi || 1602 Ratings: This is one I really need to read because I received it from Allen & Unwin so I need to review it. It’s a YA horror about an island that has 14 years of day followed by 14 years of night and some crazy stuff starts happening in the dark.

The Penguin Book of Witches by Katherine Howe || 321 Ratings: I literally just found this like I wasn’t even going to include it in this post it was that recent. I was watching Taylor @ Leather-Bound’s June Book Haul video and she mentioned a Penguin book about Egyptian myths and I was like [ADDS TO TBR IMMEDIATELY] and then on my Goodreads search I found this which is a collection of non-fiction texts about witches and the moment I get some money on my debit card I am purchasing it because witches are everything.

The May Queen Murders by Sarah Jude || 374 Ratings: Another YA Thriller (spoiler alert: this is going to be a trend). The cover is one of the most stunning and visually pleasing things I’ve seen in my life. It’s all about small towns and the woods and secrets – so my aesthetic.

Bodies of Water by V.H. Leslie || 33 Ratings: I mentioned this briefly before but I found this via Mercedes @ MercysBookishMusings and it souns so intriguing. It’s about a women’s sanatorium that uses hydropathy as a form of treatment. Years later it’s renovated into a house and a women moves in and weird things happen and the two timelines start blurring together.

Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics Every Breath by Ellie Marney Premeditated by Josin L. McQuein Perfect Days by Raphael Montes

Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics || 1313 Ratings: A YA historical horror about a family who move to a new cabin in the prairies and they discover that the inside is covered in blood. That’s honestly all I need to know. Sidenote: I love that this is a horror and it has 13 twice in the number of ratings.

Every Breath by Ellie Marney || 1965 Ratings: This is an Australian YA retelling of Sherlock Holmes. Enough said. Sign me the heck up.

Premeditated by Josin L. McQuein || 1802 Ratings: This has a really vague summary but from what I can gather it’s about a girl whose cousin committed suicide and the MC finds out why and plans to get revenge on the person who caused it. It sounds really powerful.

Perfect Days by Raphael Montes || 1288 Ratings: I found this because Joce @ squibblesreads talked about it and it sounded so disturbing and creepy. It’s about this guy who becomes obsessed with a girl writing a screenplay about Brazil and he ends up kidnapping her and taking her to Brazil to go on a twisted version of the journey she wrote in her screenplay. In case you guys hadn’t realised I really enjoy dark and twisted books 😉.

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo Take It as a Compliment by Maria Stoian
In the Dark In the Woods by Eliza Wass Gray by Pete Wentz

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman || 491 Ratings: I’m not really sure what this is about because the blurb doesn’t give much away. I just know that it’s a coming of age contemporary and has LGBT+ themes and that everyone who’s reviewed it has loved it so!!

If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo || 1830 Ratings: This is a book about a Transgirl written by a Transwoman which features a Transgirl on the cover and I’m so glad it exists. People who have read it says it lacks a bit of depth, but that it’s still such an important read.

Take It as a Compliment by Maria Stoian || 239 Ratings: I found this via Jean @ Bookishthoughts in a video where she spoke about non-fiction graphic novels. It’s a collection of women’s and men’s stories of sexual abuse that they’ve experienced. This again sounds extremely important and I love that it’s calling out the culture that says we should treat unwarranted sexual advances as a “compliment”.

In the Dark, In the Woods by Eliza Wass || 306 Ratings: So I spent THE LONGEST time being mad that The Cresswell Plot wasn’t available in Australia and then like a couple of weeks ago I discovered that it had a different title. So yeah – In the Dark, In the Woods is the alternate title for The Cresswell Plot. This is a YA thriller that’s about a family with secrets and I think the family has a cult like dynamic and there’s a woods and it just sounds so creepy and interesting. It doesn’t have the best rating on Goodreads but I don’t care. I know I’m going to love it.

Gray by Pete Wentz || 1543 Ratings: Fall Out Boy has been in my life for over 10 years and I absolutely love Pete’s lyrics and his other book The Boy With The Thorn In His Side  so I really need to read this. It’s a contemporary that is a loosely based autobiography and it has themes that deal with mental illness. The reviews say it’s dark and depressing and beautiful and I love those types of book so much.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of the books I mentioned! Feel free to leave a link to your own TTT post so I can drop by.

Hope you’re all having a fabulous day xx

  1. Nightfall is okay. I love the story and sometimes, it scares the crap out of me. But there are some moments that it fell flat for me. IDK bruh, maybe you’ll like it more than I did. It’s the type of book that would be a good movie.

Every breath is okay in a sense that I’m not really good at AU YA books. I don’t get the slang and humor and it affected my views of the book. But I do love the mystery though. It’s Sherlock so I love the plot. ♥

Premeditated..I read this years ago and I love it. I love the ending and the heroine. I’m not sure if I’ll have the same opinion if I’ll read it know but I got a positive review for this 🙂

    1. Ooh, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the books you’ve read! I’m usually weak for all YA thrillers/horrors so hopefully I’ll enjoy Nightfall. And, haha, since I’m Australian I should hopefully understand the humour in Every Breath. It’s also good to hear that you enjoyed Premeditated when you read it (even if you might not feel the same way now).

  2. I haven’t heard of many of these books before (which I guess is the point of this week’s TTT, to find under-hyped books) but I do have a few on my to-read list! I saw a great review for Radio Silence and it just sounded really interesting! Plus the cover for In the Dark, In the Woods just caught my eye and I had to add it to my to-read list as well!
Great picks for this week! 😀

      1. I’ve added more than a few books onto my to-read list from reading other people’s TTT this week, and I have a feeling a few books a load of people featured will end up having more than 2000 ratings by the time this month is over! 😀
I hope you enjoy them when you do get around to them, I’ll be keeping an eye out for your reviews for both as well! 😀

  3. Every Breath is on my list this week as well. I really enjoyed it, hopefully you will too! 🙂 And I really want to read The May Queen Murders. I agree with you about its cover, it’s gorgeous!

    Great list!

      1. I wrote a research paper on witch trials in England during my second year of uni and referenced Witchfinders by Malcolm Gaskill a lot. If you enjoy encyclopaedias, The Encyclopedia of Magic & Witchcraft by Susan Greenwood is really interesting too 🙂

  4. Great list! Radio Silence sounds very interesting. And I love Fall Out Boy and Pete’s lyrics but I didn’t know about Gray… will definitely have to read it 🙂

    1. I was so surprised when I saw how little ratings it had because I’d seen a fair amount of bloggers talk about it so I just presumed it was well known. I can’t wait to read it though!!! I’m honestly considering buying the hardcover of May Queen on Book Depository 😂

  5. I’m really interesting in the Sherlock Holmes retelling! I was excited for A Study in Charlotte but unfortunately it wasn’t my cup of tea so I’m still on the look out for a good one. Definitely checking this one out! Great list! 😀

      1. Fingers crossed! You may like A Study in Charlotte, I just found that Charlotte was way too close to BBC’s Sherlock. To the point where it was distracting. But maybe you won’t have that issue! I know a lot of people have enjoyed it. 🙂

    1. Hahahaha!! Sorry… kind of? Maybe not 😂😂 Honestly my TBR has grown so much because of your blog too so I’m glad mine’s done the same for you! I finished Bodies of Water today and I don’t really know how to describe it, but I did enjoy it and I’ll definitely be interested to see what you think!! Thank you!!!

Also, sorry for the late reply I’ve been trying to catch up on comments have been failing, haha.

      1. Please, don’t worry. It’s amazing that you catch up. Many people just never reply, which I also understand. I never knew how much work goes behind a blog until starting my own :O

  7. Omg, what? Pete Wentz is also a novelist???? I never expected that in a million years. lol I’m glad he’s a good writer, though I’m not surprised.

I also want to read If I Was Your Girl. Books with trans characters or trans issues are not something I usually read, so I need to fix this!

    1. Haha, yes! Although, I don’t think he has plans to ever write anything else which is a shame because The Boy With the Thorn in His Side was so poetic and amazing. I’m hoping Gray is just as good!

Yes, same here! I need to read more diversely in general. I’m definitely trying to work on it!

  8. I’ve seen Bodies of Water everywhere lately, so I was confused for a moment when it said 33 ratings … then I remembered I’d only seen it on Twitter because of you and before that on Mercy’s channel (and she doesn’t exactly read popular books). 😀
Also I really need to get my hands on Take it as a Compliment!
