Dear Time, Please Slow Down // Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag

Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag

So….. I was supposed to spend today blogging, but I was listening to Hamilton and I ended up playing Satisfied on repeat for an hour (my dog definitely loved me singing: “I’m the oldest and the wittiest and the gossip in New York City is insidious and Alexander is penniless that doesn’t mean I want him any less” repeatedly). I was getting way too emotional over Alexander and Angelica to the point where I was kinda incoherent. I can’t even look at a comma without wanting to lie on the floor.

Anyway.

I was tagged to do this by the amazing Casey @ Adoptabookaus.  Make sure to check out her post and blog because she’s wonderful ♥

This tag was created by Chami @ ReadLikeWildFire and Ely @ Ely Jayne. It’s where we look back at (and freak out over) the books we’ve read during the past six months.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay KristoffBest Book You’ve Read So Far In 2016

I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this before, but did you guys know that Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff is one of my favourite books?

No, but seriously this was actually a really hard choice. My first year REALLY reading properly again and I’ve been so lucky to have loved so many of the books I’ve read. Of course I had to go with this though because…… yeah, it was everything. I’ve never read a book before that was so unique and beautiful. Despite not using a typical narrative there was still character development and you were able to connect to everyone.

Runner Ups:

Night Film by Marisha Pessl A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

The Dream Thieves by Maggie StiefvaterBest Sequel You’ve Read So Far In 2016

I’m taking this to mean the 2nd book in a series so that is hands down The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater. I enjoyed The Raven Boys, but it wasn’t until I read this book that I REALLY fell in love with the series. I loved everything about this book especially Ronan Lynch. I feel like all the characters and friendships really developed in this book and it’s what hooked me and I binged read the next 2 books in the series.

The Special Ones by Em Bailey My Sister Rosa by Justine LarbalestierNew Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To

I’ve been waiting FIVE YEARS for Em Bailey to write a new book and now I have one that is about CULTS and I still haven’t read it? WHY? What is wrong with me?  My Sister Rosa almost feels like it’s written for me and I haven’t read that either.I have no idea why. By the time I get to it the US edition will probably have been released lmao. Both of these books were supposed to be automatic reads for me, but here we are in July and I still haven’t read EITHER of them.

Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay KristoffMost Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year

Obviously.

Knowing people have already read this book is KILLING ME. If it wasn’t for Illuminae this blog probably wouldn’t exist and I probably wouldn’t be reading anything other than comics and graphic novels. I can not wait for this book. I will 5000% start crying when it’s finally in my hands.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani ChokshiBiggest Disappointment

I really wasn’t a fan of A Court of Thorns and Roses. I didn’t like how the abusive elements of this book were romanticised and I didn’t like that we are supposed to want Feyre to be with one of those people who abused her. I don’t know. If you love this book then this isn’t meant to be an attack or anything. It’s just not for me and I’m really hesitant to read the sequel, but I’ll try to get to it eventually.

I gave The Star-Touched Queen 4 stars because I loved the writing and the diverse mythology, but I was disappointed in the sense that I expected and wanted this book to be SO MUCH MORE. I was really hoping it would defy a lot of tropes. I was promised empowerment, but all I got was instalove. I wanted Maya’s decisions to be for herself but like the majority of them were just for her love interest.

A Fierce and Subtle Poison by Samantha MabryBiggest Surprise

I was really intrigued by this book, but I was not expecting to absolutely fall in love with it. I presumed it was going to be your usual kind of Fantasy, but it was full of Magical Realism and South American mythology and folklore. I loved this book in the sense that it went full circle. I know a lot of people may not like the vagueness of the open ending, but I loved it. The MC was told stories by older Spanish women growing up and now this story is going to become a legend of its own. I love it so much. The writing was beautiful and the Puerto Rican setting felt like its own character.

Favourite New Author (Debut or New To You)

• Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
• Samantha Mabry
• V.E. Schwab
• Noelle Stevenson

Newest Fictional Crush

Um…….. Sorry to be really boring here, but no one? Like I have a few characters that I’m like WHAT A BABE, but that’s as far as it goes.

Newest Favourite Character

BLUE AND HER STUPID RAVEN BOYS

HANDS DOWN

THE END

NO ONE WILL EVER COMPARE

In the Afterlight by Alexandra Bracken The Raven King by Maggie StiefvaterBook That Made You Cry

Honestly, it’s probably easier for me to list what books DIDN’T make me cry. I’d have to chose The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater and In The Afterlight by Alexandra Bracken because they were both the final book in some of my favourites series. I was the definition of an Emotional Mess™ throughout them. I cried because I was happy and sad and because both endings were perfect. I’m still crying, tbh.

The Hidden Oracle by Rick RiordanBook That Made You Happy

I love the world of Percy Jackson more than I can express in words. It’s just a series that I can escape into and forget about everything. I love all the books that Rick’s written and I know a lot of people are getting tired, but I’m the complete opposite. I’ll never get sick of this world or these characters. The Hidden Oracle was even better than I ever imagined. It felt like the original series and it was so great seeing things from the POV of a God. Apollo was hilarious. There were so many great and important themes covered too.

Runner Ups:

Giant Days Vol 1 by John Allison Lumberjanes Vol. 1 Beware the Kitten Holy by Noelle Stevenson

Favorite Book to Film Adaptation

…….I’m not a movie watcher and as a result I haven’t watched ANY book to film adaptations this year. The closest one would have been Civil War, but that was SO different to the comic that I feel like you couldn’t even call it an adaptation. I’m thankful for that though because I was not a fan of the Civil War comic, haha.

Favorite Post You Have Done This Year

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

My review for A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. As I said above I wasn’t a fan so I was quite nervous posting a sort of negative review because of the hype (some other reviewers had received hate for similar reviews) and because I didn’t accidentally want to offend anyone. Everyone was really great about it though and I’m really proud of myself for being able to post it since I am generally an extremely anxious person who will usually avoid almost anything that could possibly cause confrontations.

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year

What Book Do You Need to Read by the End of the Year

ALL OF THEM?

There are so many books that I really need to read it’s crazy. Being away from reading I feel like I’m so behind so it’s not just new releases that I have to keep up with it’s also a huge backlist that I want to get through.

Probably everything that’s on my Make Me Read It Readathon Poll which closes in a few days so you should totally go vote!!!! #thatpromotho 😎

  1. Great post! I totally tagged you for this as well, but my post is scheduled to go up in a couple of weeks! Very glad you had the chance to do this tag though 🙂 V.E Schwab was also on my “Favorite New Author section” She’s truly amazing…

  2. I feel like we’ve had similar years so far LOL. I’m currently reading & loving Illuminae. I discovered V.E. Schwab this year with ADSOM & she’s now become an auto-buy author. The Raven Boys are tucked away in my little heart, never to be let go lol. I’m currently waiting for the U.S. edition of My Sister Rosa! I picked up a Fierce & Subtle Poison last month after hearing that it’s set on the island of Puerto-Rico. Bumping it up on my TBR list now since you’re the 1st person to review it that ive come across 🙂

    1. Haha, yay! I’m so glad you’re enjoying Illuminae. And yes, Same with V.E. Schwab!! I can’t wait to read everything she’s written. The Raven Cycle series is everything ♥ I hope you enjoy A Fierce & Subtle Poison! It’s a book that’s not for everyone, but I loved the writing style and the Puerto Rico setting honestly felt so alive.

  3. I WANT TO DO THIS LAUREN !! (Please..?) Omg I’m such a baby 😂😂
I want to read Illuminae so bad, it’s beautiful and the formatting is very intriguing I feel like the ebook wouldn’t do it justice so I’m waiting until I can get my hands on a physical copy 😭

    1. Um, no way Fadwa! HAHAHA. Of course!! Consider yourself tagged ♥♥

I read it in ebook and physical format and like ebook was manageable, but it definitely wasn’t the same experience as reading it physically. There are some parts were you have to turn the book every way and doing that on my Kindle was really awkward. I’m super excited for you to read it when you can though ♥

      1. 😂😂😂 Aw thank you ❤❤ I already did it and scheduled it though 🙈😂 it’s coming out tomorrow.
Well, shall I way to get a physical copy in a couple months or just buy the ebook and get the physical one if I love it ? 😊 Decisions decisions.

  4. I’m thrilled to know you loved The Raven Boys sequel so so much, it makes me even more impatient to get to it 🙂 And Illuminae, I’m SO curious about that book’s formatting, but I don’t know if it’s a story I might enjoy or not… I guess I’ll have to see 😀

    1. The Dream Thieves is definitely my favourite book in the series. I loved it so much. I really hope you do too!! Illuminae does have quite a few science-y scenes, but there’s also so many hilarious and heartbreaking moments. Such great character development too. I definitely think it’s worth giving a try!!

  5. I think this is the first negative review/opinion I’ve seen of A Court of Thorns and Roses. I haven’t read it myself, but I’ve been wanting to because everyone loves it. So it’s always refreshing to see someone who didn’t love it. And yes, totally stick to your guns and tell people you didn’t like it. You are allowed to have your opinions! Go you. Haha.

  6. Loved reading this! There are so many books on here that I need to read! The Raven Boys! Illuminae! A Darker Shade of Magic. 🙂

  7. I enjoyed reading through this post! I’m going to have to do this tag as it seems like a cool refresher for the first half of the year! The reasons why you were disappointed in A Court of Thorns and Roses is one of the reasons why I haven’t read it yet! One of these days I’m going to have to just see the story for myself, but your comments don’t fill me with confidence LOL!

    1. Thank you, Astra ♥ Definitely consider yourself tagged if you want to do it 😊 It was definitely disappointing seeing so many abusive moments romanticised and the whole thing felt very “we should reward this character because they could have done something worse but didn’t”. I’d be SUPER interested on hearing your thoughts though if you decide to read it!!

  8. This is a fantastic tag! I too, loved Illuminae when I read it earlier this year and I’m sitting here just dying for Gemina. It can’t come soon enough!

  9. Thanks so much for the tag Lauren! I may have to move this one further up my queue of tags though so I can post it during the mid-year rather than a couple of months down the line though! 😀
I agree with so many of your picks for these as well. If I’d have read Illuminae and ADSOM this year they would definitely be competitors for the best book I’ve read in 2016, also although Gemina is on my most anticipated release list for the second half of this year so are so many other books, I’m not sure how I’ll narrow that one down. 🙂

      1. I try and get around to every tag I’ve been tagged in, it just takes me a little (long) while, and I figured it would be better to post a mid-year tag in July than in October!
I’m not sure if it’s just since I started blogging but it seems like there are so many amazing books being released this year, more than last at least! And I know the feeling, I have more than a few competing for my top read of 2016 already! 🙂

  10. Thanks for tagging me! Love the mentions to Hamilton, the freaking coma, and the Raven Cycle.
Now that we’re on the subject of Hamilton, I don’t know if you’ve done this but Lin and other random (but nonetheless cool) people annotated all the lyrics at genius.com (http://genius.com/albums/Lin-manuel-miranda/Hamilton-original-broadway-cast-recording) so you get pieces of info maybe you would otherwise miss or wouldn’t get because they’re historical/musical references you don’t know. Reading those whilst learning the lyrics and crying over the awesomeness of it all were the past four to five months of my life. Welcome to the Hamilton life. It’s a great ride.

    1. Haha! The Raven Cycle is everything and Hamilton has COMPLETELY taken over my life. I fell in a Hamilton shaped hole and I’m never coming out.

Oooh yes, I did see that when I was searching for lyrics!! I had a quick look, but I’m definitely going to devote some more time to really read it all.

  11. I love this tag! And I really need to read Illuminae soon. Very soon! Same with A Darker Shade of Magic!
I did just buy the complete Raven Boys series this weekend so I’ll start by binge-reading the rest of that series. I totally understand what you mean when you say you have a huge backlist! I feel like I’m always trying to catch up with all the books that have been published already and I’m already behind on the new releases as well. As long as we’re reading good books it’s all good I guess 🙂

  12. Great post! I can’t believe you didn’t care for ACOTAR or The Star-Touched Queen, but hey not everyone likes the same things! I’m surprised how many people I’ve seen lately who didn’t like those so you’re not alone!

  13. Thanks for the tag Lauren!
I’m so proud that you had the courage to post your review on A Court of Thorns and Roses too and didn’t let the idea of people giving hate or negative responses stop you from giving your opinion. I saw some posts of people who had that happen to them and it was crazy, it annoys me that people attack others on their reading preferences and their honest opinions?
I just finished it and I really enjoyed it but I can see why others aren’t a fan, hey if we all liked everything the same we would be pretty boring wouldn’t we?

Illumanie looks super pretty, of course i’m behind on EVERYTHING so haven’t read it. Is it a long book?
I also need to read A Darker Shade of Magic!

  14. Great post! I agree with you on a lot of books in this post except maybe for ACOTAR because I adore that book! ….but that’s okay I respect everybody’s opinions! 😀 Illuminae is also my favorite because it’s just so epic and awesome and definitely one of a kind so naturally I also can’t wait for Gemina!!

  15. I reallllllllly need to read the Raven Cycle already! Keep hearing such amazing things about it and I dont know why I haven’t just picked it up already. Just added it to my TBR for sure! Great post!

  16. I love LOVE V.E. Schwab. Have you read Vicious yet? That’s my favorite of hers. And I think that The Raven King and In The Afterlight we’re both really good finales. I already miss Blue and the gang. Also, I agree with you on ACOTAR. As much as I liked it, I don’t deny that some of the parts made me extremely uncomfortable. I just picked up the sequel and I only hope those parts are addressed.
