The book is divided into four chapters, and each chapter serves a different purpose. Deals with a different pain. Heals a different heartache. milk and honey takes readers through a journey of the most bitter moments in life and finds sweetness in them because there is sweetness everywhere if you are just willing to look.

I’m speechless.

I don’t know how to write a review for this collection of poetry that can adequately describe the journey of heartache and inspiration that you go on. To be honest, I’m making this post more as a gush fest because I need to share how this poetry collection made me feel thousands of indescribable emotions.

I found this book from a post that Lindsey @ A Piece of Paradis made and I’m so glad I decided to read this because I honestly feel like my life is changed. I understand how dramatic that sounds, but Rupi’s words burned their way into my soul and they have made an imprint on my heart that will stay with me forever.

milk and honey is told in four parts – hurting, loving, breaking and finally healing. It’s a raw and honest emotional roller coaster from the very first poem. I was in tears from the start to the finish. There were actual tear drops on my Kindle. I felt every emotion Rupi was pouring out. I connected to so many lines and verses. There is nothing like someone putting exactly how you feel into words. Honestly, just thinking about this book now and re-reading the highlights in my Kindle is making me want to tear up. I was crying whilst writing my brief Goodreads review.

This poetry collections deals with some triggering, but important subjects such as sexual assault, in a direct way that is needed given the prominence of rape culture in society. If you can read about those topics then I highly recommend you pick this up. Rupi also makes note of feminism, relationships and being a women of colour (Rupi is a WOC herself).

As I mentioned above a review wouldn’t do this collection justice so instead I’m just going to share some of my favourites (it was hard not to list the entire book) and beg that you please, please, PLEASE read this. I completely understand that poetry isn’t for everyone, but please give this a chance because I think you’ll still love it no matter what your stance is. It’s such a quick and hard hitting read.

the idea of shrinking is hereditary is the one that hit me the absolute hardest. I cried for about ten minutes. Also, you can find the majority of these poems (for free) on Rupi’s Instagram.

This is honestly something I’m going to read repeatedly and will still be able to feel the heart wrenching emotion like it’s the first time.
