My Favourite Outdoor Activity is Going Back Inside // Top Ten Tuesday #12: ‘Summer Reads’

ttt

Here is a list of some things I’m not particularly fond of:

  • Summer
  • ‘Summer reads’
  • The beach
  • ‘Beach reads’

Here is a list of some things that every weekly list and feature in the blogosphere is focusing on lately:

  • Summer
  • ‘Summer reads’
  • The beach
  • ‘Beach reads’

You can understand my struggles when I saw that this week’s TTT was “Beach Reads“.

HOWEVER, I have decided to show you that I am not always about darkness and sadness. Shocking, I know. Sometimes there are lighter contemporaries that I want to read. So, this is what this list is going to focus on. You have no idea how hard it was trying to find ten. No. Idea. If some of these aren’t completely “light” then 💁🏻. I TRIED, YOU GUYS.

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We’d love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

My Theme: Lighthearted Contemporaries I Want to Read

Lets Get Lost by Adi Alsaid Scarlett Epstein Hates It Here by Anna Breslaw Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan

Let’s Get Lost by Adi Alsaid – This is one I’ve had on my bookshelf for like a million years. I love road trips so this should be fun!
Scarlett Epstein Hates it Here by Anna Breslaw – I know this has mixed reviews, but I’m still excited to read it. I’ll be really interested to see how fandom is handled.
Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan – MUSIC! I love the movie version! I loved Naomi & Ely’s No Kiss List which Rachel and David also co-wrote. So I already know that I love their writing style.

Summer Skin by Kirsty Eagar To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han The Disenchantments by Nina LaCour

Summer Skin by Kirsty Eagar – Okay, so this is a New Adult and normally I avoid these like the plague, but it’s supposed to be a completely refreshing take and has feminist tones. Vivian loves it too and I trust her. Plus the cover is my favourite colour.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han – Honestly, I mostly want to read this because of the hype. I have no idea how I’m going to feel about it, but hopefully I’ll like it!
The Disenchantments by Nina LaCour – MUSIC!!! I love this cover. I want to be in a band and go on a road trip. Or actually just go on a road trip with a band since the only musical talent I have is playing a handful of songs on the recorder (thanks, primary school). This looks really fun.

Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson Gena Finn by Hannah Moskowitz and Kat Helgeson Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson – This just seems really interesting, I love that there’s a slight mystery aspect. I’ve never read a Morgan Matson book and this seems like a great place to start. The cover is perfect, too.
The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson – I debated for so long whether I wanted to read this or not because it’s not really my thing. However, the dogs won me over. I just could’t resist. Everyone seems to love it too, so [fingers crossed].
Gena/Finn by Hannah Moskowitz and Kat Helgeson – Um, fandom references + LGBT? Sign me up! I love that the girls met online and that it’s not going down the typical straight couple route. I don’t even care that this has a low rating on Goodreads. I’m really excited to read it!
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell – Yeah. I’ve never read a Rainbow Rowell book despite having Eleanor & Park on my shelf for a billion years. I know this has some more serious themes and deals with anxiety, but that’s a huge part of why I want to read it. Despite that, it seems like it’s still going to be cute and again FANDOM REFERENCES.

So, there you go! 10 Contemporaries that aren’t about death and murder that I want to read. I’m going to go back to channeling my inner Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way now because this whole post just felt so weird.

I would love to hear your thoughts about any of these books! Have you read them? Are they on your TBR? Feel free to leave a link to your own TTT so I can drop by.

Hope you’re all having a fantastic day! xx

P.S Technically I’m not supposed to be here and should be resting to fight off this Death Flu™ that’s making me sound like the girl from The Grudge when I talk/breathe. As much as I love spending all day in bed apparently that doesn’t carry over to when I’m forced to because I literally resorted to cleaning my walls today so I had an “excuse” to get up. So, shhh 🙊. I was never here.

  1. I’m not a hug fan of YA Summer Contemporaries but I did love “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before”
I didn’t like Fangirl and I DNFed Since You’ve Been Gone lol. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on them though.

  2. Yes yes YES! Not a summer person at all. I have no books to recommend, and I’ve not read any you’ve listed here either haha 🙂 *high five*

  3. If you love road trip stories, you should put Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour on your TBR! If you ask me, it’s the perfect road trip book, and it’s a contemporary so obviously it’s a bit light at times, but it covers heavier issues just as well, and that book has an incredible character development. I am a huge fan of Morgan Matson’s books, so I can only encourage you to read the ones you have on your list, they are all SO GOOD.
I have Gena/Finn on my TBR as well, and I am so excited to finally read it ❤

    1. That one is on my TBR too. I’m pretty sure anyway. There’s so many things on there I’ve lost count 😅 If it isn’t I’ll definitely add it though. I’ve heard lots of great things about Morgan Matson so I’m hoping I’ll love her books as much as everyone else does! Fingers crossed that Gena/Finn is as good as it sounds!!

  4. Picking out 10 beach reads is a struggle for me too! It’s not because I don’t like some light contemporaries, it’s just that I live in a country with tropical climate so we don’t really have summer here, hence I don’t go to the beach, let alone to read so I was having hard time imagining what to read on a beach in a summer day. But I did it though! Anyway, I only ever read Since You’ve Been Gone and I kinda like it!

    1. Ahh, that would be a bit of a challenge!! I live a couple of minutes from the beach, but I hate it so I’m never there, haha. It’s good to hear Since You’ve Been Gone was enjoyable. I’m not sure when I’ll get to it, but hopefully it’ll be a fun read 🙂

  5. Haha your post made me laugh! I struggle with these summer topics too, hence me not doing one… Yet.

I deffo recommend Nick n Norah, it’s a beautiful book!

    1. Haha, yay 😆!! It’s definitely not my strong suite! I’m currently experiencing winter too, so it’s a bit hard to imagine all this summery stuff, haha.

I’m hoping to read it soon! I think I’ll really enjoy it.

  6. haha! funny because I don’t like these kind of reads either but I think I may need them 🙂 I’m in a horribly read slump so I’ll try ANYHTING at this point. Your list will be helpful! thanks for sharing 🙂

  7. God I can’t imagine how hard this TTT pick must have been for you! Especially if you prefer darkness and sadness.
I’ve read two from your list this week, Fangirl and Since You’ve Been Gone which I did think we’re both really good, and the rest are probably on my to-read list somewhere. I’m actually really excited for summer when I can get started in my summer TBR list but if my genuine fear of horror movies tells you anything it’s that I prefer light and fluffy contemporaries with happy endings 🙂
Still great picks, especially considering it was a struggle for you to come up with ten this week, and I hope you start feeling better soon as well! 🙂

    1. It was quite challenging 😂 I did a lot of searching on my Goodreads shelves.

I’m definitely excited to read both of those! As much as I hate summer I have really enjoyed seeing how excited people are for it! I hope you have fun with your TBR ♥

And thank you! I’m making a slow recovery, haha.

  8. Since You’ve Been Gone was the first Morgan Matson book I read, and I loved it. Although the mystery aspect is definitely in the background of the coming-of-age story.

  9. I only read Fangirl and PS I Still Love You and I really liked them both – though I did like Fangirl a more, because I thought it was funnier while still dealing with some issues and also more relatable.
I’ve only read one Morgan Matson book so far (Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour) but Since You’ve Been Gone and The Unexpected Everything are on my TBR list as well.

    1. I’m really excited to read Fangirl. I actually can’t believe I haven’t read it yet, because I remember being excited for it before it was even released, haha. I’ve heard good things about Amy and Roger too! Everyone seems to love Morgan Matson so hopefully it’ll be a good contemporary place for me to start.

  10. Oh my god Lauren, Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist is probably my favorite book ever. It’s just so damn quotable and awesome. I mean hi, they run through the city looking for a secret concert. I’d love to do that one day.

For my TTT post this week, I totally hammed it up and went with literal beach stuff. I honestly had no idea what books I was going to include until I got to them at the end of the post, hahaha.

    1. I’m super excited to (eventually) read it! And right, that sounds absolutely amazing. Talk about goals, haha.

I honestly had no idea what books I wanted to choose either 😂 I spent so long stalking my Goodreads shelves.

  11. Hahaha this was hilarious! 😂
I don’t really care about any of these books (I completely agree about the whole beach reads thing) but it’s a good selection. 😀

    1. Ooh it’s good to hear you enjoyed it! I haven’t ready any of her books, but I’ve heard a lot of good things so I figured it’d be a good place to start since I’m not usually a contemporary fan. The Disenchantments sounds so fun!

  12. OH NOOOOOO, I’m so so sorry to hear you’re sick–fingers crossed for a speedy recovery, because being forced to lie in bed is just AWFUL. I’m all about telling those viruses to shut their pie holes and NEVAR TELL ME WHAT TO DOOOO! Lmao–seriously though, get better soon!

I am dyyyyyying to read Scarlet Epstein. I need it. I need it like air. Like water. Like…uhm…like a pulse?! Something.

I totes broke the rules and didn’t even DO this week’s theme (okay, so I haven’t actually done the theme for like…three weeks now? SHHHH!) Whoops?!

Here’s hoping you enjoy them, when/if you get the chance to pick these books up! Here’s my TTT, if you’re interested in checking it out!

    1. 😂😂😂 Thank you, Beth!! I’m slowly making my way to the road of recovery. Hopefully there’s no set backs!

I’m hoping to love Scarlett Epstein!! There’s been a lot of mixed reviews, but fingers crossed we both love it.

Haha! Where’s the fun in following the rules 😎

  13. Great choices! Morgan Matson books are FANTASTIC contemporaries and I can’t wait to pick up the Unexpected Everything! It seems like such a fun one! I also have Fangirl and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before on my TBR so I must get to those soon 🙂 I definitely recommend Kasie West books if you’re looking for more! I’ve only read the Fistance Between Us and On the Fence but they’re so light-hearted and fun!

  14. Lauren, I just have to send love to you over these thousands of miles that separate us. I laughed so hard and so recognized myself in this post 🙂 hahaha – my favorite summer activity is going back inside too (or finding a place where it’s raining or snowing ;)) I’m glad to hear I’m not alone in not liking the beach! (yuck, I am not a huge sun-fan at all). Great modifications to this week’s top 10! 🙂

  15. This is a great list! I haven’t read any of them except for Fangirl, and I’ll definitely take a look at them. I totally relate with you – I hate summer. Winter is my weather, when it’s dark and cold like my soul. 🙂

  16. I haven’t read any of these. 😡 I sure am glad I was on vacay for this TTT because I’m not sure if I would have had many books to pick myself lol! I really want to read a lot of these books though!
