NY-Times By the Book Tag

Another tag today, because I am Tags Trash™. Hopefully my real life issues will go away soon and I can have the energy to write some other posts. I was tagged to do this by the amazing Louise @ Genie Reads. Make sure to give her post a read and follow her blog if you’re not already because it’s fantastic ♥ I can’t say I have ever in my life read the NY-Times or really a newspaper (I just get too angry haha), but I absolutely love watching people do this tag on BookTube so I’m excited to do it!

The NY-Times By the Book Tag was originally created by Marie Berg and you can watch her original video here.

Covers = Goodreads

Wrecked by Maria Padian Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini TaylorWhat book is on your nightstand now?

I don’t have a “nightstand” but these are my current reads. I’ve only read about 40 pages of Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but I’m really enjoying it so far. It’s really unlike anything I’ve  read before. Laini Taylor’s writing is wonderful. Wrecked is an ARC from Netgalley that’s about a sexual assault that happens on a college campus and I’m halfway through and I’ve never been more angry reading a book in my life. I don’t mean that in a “the book is really bad way”, but just at the events that are taking place because it’s scarily realistic and I hate that so many people have to go through this. It’s not fair.

The Raven King by Maggie StiefvaterThe Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins GilmanWhat was the last truly great book you’ve read?

I know I keep talking about both these books and you’re probably sick of it bUT I JUST LOVE THEM SO MUCH. I can’t recommend The Yellow Wallpaper enough and it’s free on Kindle and Project Gutenberg and anywhere else you can find on the Internet. It is so important and it made such an impact on me – it’s going to stay with me forever. Do I even need to say anything about The Raven King 😂? Blue and her stupid Raven Boys and everyone in this series is going to be the END OF ME. I still have a slight book hangover from this. I finished it at the start of the month and it’s literally all I’ve thought about. I keep rereading all my favourite parts that I have highlighted on my Kindle. I’m not ready to leave this world and I need more 😭😭😭

If you could meet any writer – dead or alive – who would it be? And what would you want to know?

Okay, so I’m cheating with this because I have a list:

  • Sylvia Plath
  • Charlotte Perkins Gilman
  • J.K. Rowling
  • Rick Riordan
  • R.L. Stine

I don’t really have questions as such, it’d be more me expressing my undying love and gratitude.

I would thank Sylvia Plath and Charlotte Perkins Gilman for their words and contributions to mental illness. I feel like Sylvia Plath would just be able to put how I feel into words perfectly. And I would just say endless thank yous to Charlotte Perkins Gilman for The Yellow Wallpaper (highlighting how dangerous it is to mistreat mental illnesses) and her stance on feminism in an era that didn’t care about either. With J.K. Rowling and R.L. Stine I’d tell them thank you for shaping my childhood. J.K. made me fall in love with magic and R.L. Stine is what made me fall in love with horror and all things creepy and weird. And then with Rick Riordan I would tell him thank you for writing a series that is my Happy Place™ and then just start crying and ask why certain things had to happen to a certain character who I will NEVER EVER EVER GET OVER. EVER.

What books might we be surprised to find on your shelf?

I Promise I Won't Kill You

I have talked about it before, but I have a weird fascination with true crime and I have a shelf dedicated to books about it. The psychology is fascinating and being a criminal psychologist is like my unrealistic career goals. I find unsolved cases the most interesting like: the Black Dahlia Murder, Jack the Ripper and the Zodiac Killer (I have books on all 3). If I’m not reading true crime books I’m watching true crime documentaries. I don’t even know what it is. I just love the whole concept of profiling and trying to solve cases and put all the pieces together so I guess this is how I do it. I always try and solve the cases on crime procedurals and feel really accomplished when I figure it out, haha. If there’s anyone else out there who shares my weirdness I really recommend checking out The Crime Library, it was an amazing online resource with tons of free articles and information. It closed down in 2014, but all their content is archived and can still be accessed!

How do you organize your personal library?

bookshelf tbr1

I’m currently in the middle of reorganising my bookshelves (it’s why only the first two shelves are shown bc the rest are an absolute mess). I’m honestly running out of space so everything is like triple stacked lmao. I need another bookshelf so badly but I’m poor. Anyway, my main bookshelf is in author alphabetical order – except the “display books” (rainbow shelves are pretty af but that would stress me out so much). On my other bookshelf I have all my Harry Potter books, my Rick Riordan books, my true crime books and some random YouTube/Celeb ones. My vinyls and record player are also on this shelf along with some DVDs and some other random books that don’t fit anywhere else. That shelf is an even bigger mess which is why there’s no photo lmao. Then I have all my (physical) TBR books on my desk in a pile that could actually crush me and my laptop to death.

What book have you always meant to read and haven’t gotten around to yet?

LMAO did you mean EVERY SINGLE BOOK on my TBR?

Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke The Bell Jar by Sylvia PlathOkay, so I’m going with Wink Poppy Midnight because as soon as I heard about the book a few months ago I was dying to read it and I bought it the day it was released and I still HAVEN’T gotten to it!!! I know it’s gotten negative reviews but I don’t care because books like this are my aesthetic so I’m almost certain I’ll love it. Also, The Bell Jar because I’ve been wanting to read it every since I finished Ariel in like 2012 and I still haven’t got to it. I’m the WORST.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. MaasDisappointing, overrated, just not good: what book did you feel you are supposed to like but didn’t?

I said everything in my review so I won’t repeat myself, but yeah. This book was definitely not a favourite. If Sarah J. Maas’ writing style wasn’t so brilliant I would have given it 2 stars. I know how much everyone loves this series and I am going to read ACOMAF, but yeah – I just don’t think this is going to be one for me. Sorry 🙈!

What kind of stories are you drawn to? Any you stay clear of?

Horror is my absolute favourite, but I enjoy sci-fi, thrillers, magical realism and fantasy (high fantasies intimidate me though). I like dystopians too even if they might be “overdone” and paranormal, but it’s so hard to find paranormal books that aren’t super romance-y. I avoid romance contemporaries like the plague. I understand why people enjoy them, but they are not for me. Contemporaries in general aren’t really my thing unless they’re dark or dealing with a difficult/important subject. I just really love stories with great character development and beautiful friendships. I love whimisical writing, unreliable narrators and open endings. The vaguer the better tbh. I know that is probably a lot of people’s worst nightmare, but I love it!

If you could require the president to read one book, what would it be?

Australia doesn’t have a president we have an extremely questionable prime minister and I hope he and his party are kicked out next election. Do not let me down, Australia. I’d probably force him and his entire party to read a book that talks about how to be decent human beings since they clearly don’t know how to do that 😊

Cinder by Marissa MeyerA Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. SchwabWhat do you plan to read next?

Once I’m done with Daughter of Smoke and Bone I’m 99.9% sure I’m going to start Cinder and/or A Darker Shade of Magic. I am super excited to get to both of them, though! I’m crossing my fingers that I love them as much as most people do. I have some review books I should be getting to as well, but we’ll see what happens 😅

  1. Yay, thank you for the tag! 🙂

I loved your answer for what book you would make the president read lol I live in the US, but I see so many Australians who hate your prime minister. And, god forbid, if Trump becomes my president, I’ll be able to relate on a whole different level.

        1. My dad keeps telling me he’s selling his house and moving to the Bahamas if that happens. I told him I’ll join him, and that we can sell straw hats on the beach together. Haha! That sounds pretty amazing though. I work for the Department of Defense, which would make him my Commander-in-chief. Hell no! I’m outta here!

    1. No worries! I can’t wait to see your post 🙂

God, Trump is so awful. He’s even worse than what we’re dealing with. The fact that he’s even allowed to run for presidency is terrifying. It’s amazing what money can get you. I honestly wouldn’t even be surprised if he caused a world war if he was elected. I’m seriously praying for the entire world that doesn’t happen.

      1. It genuinely terrifies me that he may become president. I can’t even imagine what would happen. A world war is a definite possibility.

  3. I just laughed out loud when you mentioned the Zodiac Killer. I have literally no idea who that is or what happened, all I know is that there are lots of jokes about Ted Cruz being the Zodiac Killer. That’s the first time I heard about it and it will forever be my impression. 😂

    Like

    1. Haha! That Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer thing was so hilarious. The Zodiac Killer was a shooter in America who never got caught and sent in all these weird cryptic messages to the police. There was also all these jokes going around before the Ted Cruz ones about John Green being the Zodiac Killer too lmao.

  4. Such an awesome tag – thank you for the nomination! ‘An extremely questionable Prime Minister’ 😂 hahaha that sounds just like the UK! I hope you’re doing okay with whatever you have going on Lauren. 💖 x

  5. Wrecked sounds so interesting. I was the same when reading Asking For It, which covers a similar topic, it made me so unbelievably angry and sad that I kept having to take breaks from it.

I’m so glad to hear you’re enjoying Daughter of Smoke and Bone so far! I loved it. It’s so different, and so beautifully written.

I’ve never read any Sylvia Plath, but I’m so desperate to. I can’t decide whether I want to start with Ariel or The Bell Jar.

    1. It really is! It shows the whole process of how things are dealt with in-campus which is super interesting because I’m not very knowledgeable on American colleges except for all the stereotypical stuff you see in the media. It’s really frustrating though because it just makes me so angry that rape victims have to prove everything and are always seen as liars, but the rapist gets defended and ugh. I really want to read Asking For It too, even though it’ll probably make me even angrier.

It’s so strange, but in the best way! I’m excited to read more.

Ariel is a really quick read, if that helps!

      1. Oh, that’s interesting that it focuses on the campus. I know basically nothing about American colleges either. Asking For It focuses more on the family, and it was absolutely heartbreaking seeing just how deep victim blaming goes. I agree, it’s so frustrating when victims have to constantly defend themselves, I’m glad that there are books like this out there now so that (hopefully) people can get a better understanding of it.

I know! I told my friend to read it and she text me like “I have no idea what’s happening but I like it?”

I might go with Ariel then! I’ve seen some really beautiful editions of it, so it’ll be nice to finally give myself a reason to buy it haha!

  6. You said you’re tags trash. Haha! I like that. 😉 You crack me up. I see you have a serial killer obsession, too. I’ll read or watch anything with serial killers. Criminal minds, Hannibal, Dexter, Zodiac… R.L. Stone is a good choice. I loved the Goosebumps books when I was younger. They were my warmup before moving on to Stephen King. Your physical book collection is insane. You’ve got a lot of reading to do.

    1. Hahaha, thanks 😆 Always happy to help make people laugh 😊 I so totally have a serial killer obsession. Criminal Minds is one of my absolute favourite shows. I really want to read a Stephen King book! I’m making it a goal this year to get to one of his books. I grew up around all his books and movies because my mum is a huge fan. I actually can’t believe I haven’t read one of his books yet. Haha, I know! That’s not even all of it. There’s way more books on my shelves that I haven’t read yet. Those are just my most recent purchases 😅

      1. You like horror and haven’t read Stephen King? What??!! You need to read one his books. His writing is incredible. I’d recommend starting with Salem’s Lot. It’s his best one, in my opinion. The description and scene setting is amazing. You literally feel like you live in the town. You’re a book hoarder like me, except I switched to ebooks so I can hide my shame easier. Haha!

  7. Your answer to the president question made me laugh so much! Haha our prime minister needs to read the same books too. I would definitely recommend reading The Bell Jar soon; Plath puts into words what I struggle to! Those words still haunt me. Thank you so much for the tag 🙂

I hope you enjoy reading Cinder and A Darker Shade of Magic. Those are on my list too!

    1. Haha! Happy to help 😅 Yeah, I’ve heard you guys are in a similar situation! Honestly though they’re probably all beyond help. Society is the worst for voting them in. I really can’t wait to read The Bell Jar. I know it’s going to be difficult, but I also know it’s probably going to be so important to me. No worries! I can’t wait to see your post 🙂

      Thanks! Hopefully you do too!

      1. I just don’t understand what about these parties appeals to people. They’re so awful! 😦

Yeah, you’re right. The Bell Jar is so important, but read it when you’re ready. It takes you on a bit of an emotional journey.

        1. Right!!! All this current party cares about is rich, white, able bodied people. Before our current PM took over our old one (from the same party) even appointment HIMSELF as Minister for Women??? Im really hoping Australia fixes it’s mistakes haha.

I’m definitely looking forward to it ❤️

          1. He appointed himself as Minister for Women? Oh man, that’s actually insane. Our PM literally doesn’t care. It hasn’t even been a year and he’s managed to anger so many people. Sigh.

  8. I’ve probably said this before but Cinder and ADSOM are two of my favourite series so I really REALLY hope you love them both as much as I did, and the same with Daughter of Smoke and Bone too. It starts off a little slow but once you get into it it is un-put-down-able, it’s is so beautifully written and the world-building is ust magical. I really hope you love it! 😀
Also I completely agree with you, The Raven King is definitely one of the last truly great books I read as well. It was just perfect. 🙂

      1. I think the DoSaB series just gets better and better with each book I really enjoyed the first but the third was my favourite of the lot! It’s a brilliant series.
God I know what you mean, but I guess we’ll just have to settle for re-reading the series over and over 😀

  9. I read DoSaB at the end of last month and holy crap, it was amazing!! I started off super confusing, but the action just keeps building and building and leaves your mind blown. I’m picking up the 2nd one next month because I just have to know what happens next. I hope you love it as much as I do!! ❤ CInder is also a great book, but I personally don't think the story gets amazing until the 3rd book. So if you don't care for it too much, just hang in there! It gets so much better.

    1. I’m so excited to read more of DoSaB! It’s so strange, but in the best way and I can not wait to see what happens!!! I’ve heard that lots of people’s favourite is Cress. I really love the concept of Cinder so hopefully I’ll enjoy it. If I don’t like the first book in a series I normally give the others a try anyway because I’m insanely stubborn and need to know what happens.

  10. Ahhh what a fun post! I love Daughter of Smoke & Bone so I hope u enjoy the rest of it. I’m also really interested in the psychology of crime, mainly because I’m a psychology student but I surprisingly never read books about it. I enjoy tv shows about crime though they’re fantastic. Also, bummer that u don’t like ACOTAR because I love it so much and I guarantee that ACOMAF is so much better, it is the real deal while ACOTAR is slightly shallow. Anyway, your answer regarding the prime minister made me want to look him up on google lol

    1. Yay, I’m glad to hear you liked DoSaB! I’m loving it so far and I am really excited to see what happens! Ahh, I’m glad I’m not alone. I used to watch quite a few TV shows on it, but now the main one I watch is Criminal Minds! I was hoping to love it, but yeah – it just didn’t sit well with me. I am keeping an open mind with ACOMAF though. Hopefully I’ll enjoy it more! HAHA. His name is Malcom Turnball, he took over from Tony Abbott. Australia’s politicians care more about trying to outrank each other than actually running the country. We’ve had like 4 different prime minsters in the past 6 years because they keep taking people from their own party out. Basically, the party that’s in now only cares for rich, white, able bodied people! And have zero time or respect for anyone else.

      1. So saddd but it happens to me sometimes.. it’s like I’m all set to like a book and it ends up not meeting my expectations. Oh yes please! ACOMAF is a game changer, I hope u like it 😀 4 different PMs in 6 years?? Ouch… how is that even possible? That must be disappointing for the people 😦 when’s the next election? Anyway, I could relate to you. I for one am not loving my own president either (I’m Indonesian). It’s not like he’s a jerk or something but he just keeps making pointless decisions and policies. How unfortunate.

        Like

        1. I hope so too! I think it’s something like that or maybe 7, but still 😅 Other people in the parties vote them out and take over. It’s ridiculous like if they put that energy into actually caring about the country we might have some progress lmao. July!!! I am praying to everything that they get voted out. Ugh! Sorry you don’t have the best political situation going on either.

I wasn’t so sure about Wrecked, because the cover is pink and I don’t enjoy it at all, but you might have convinced me to read it already. It’s terrible that such things are happening, but very important to talk about it and address the issues so they don’t get ignored.
Hope you’re doing okay with life issues and that everything will turn out good fast ❤

    1. Haha!! Just being honest unfortunately 😂😂 but omg yes I know what you mean!! it’s kind of terrifying that these people with such power and in charge really don’t seem to care all that much about the people ://

Pink is my favourite colour so I loved the cover 🙈 It’s definitely a frustrating read in the sense that I can’t believe society treats rape victims this way. It’s interesting seeing the process for how things like this are handled in-campus though because the victim isn’t going to the police and instead it’s being tried at the college. I’ll definitely have a review up once I’ve finished!

      Thanks, Yasaman ❤️❤️

      1. Yes, it’s all going downhill if they keep focusing on the wrong things and don’t start actually doing something useful. Taste varies a lot 😉 I like pink flowers though, so calming 😀 This really sounds like a book I have to read, even if only to get that perspective. I’m excited to read your review, then I’ll be sure about reading it or not! 🙂

  14. Haha, I know how you feel about extremely questionable prime ministers – we have one of those in the UK! Loved reading your answers – I have exactly the same problem as you with running out of space for books. In fact, I had to sort out some books to get rid of this weekend – it was so upsetting, but I just have nowhere to put them 😦 I really love The Yellow Wallpaper too, and The Bell Jar is fantastic. Alsooo, random question – have you ever read the book ‘Night Film’ by Marisha Pessl? Judging by what you’ve said about the kind of books you like, I think you’d really enjoy it. It’s a thriller, but it’s also really surreal and has elements of magical realism – it’s creepy and also has the best open ending ever! (I love open endings too!)
