The Blogger Recognition Award

Just to prove how bad I am at keeping up to date with tags. I was nominated for this by a bunch of people. I didn’t realise how many I had until I was going through my bookmarks. I feel rather greedy 😂 Anyway! A huge, huge thank you to Izzi @ Ravenclaw Book Club, Sammie @ Bookshelves & Biros, Jill @ Rant & Rave About Books, Fatima @ Noteable Pad, Katherine @ Fabled Haven, Maya @ Maya The Book Explorer and Lindsey @ A Piece of Paradise. All of these people are super lovely with wonderful blogs and you should definitely go give them a follow ♥.

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1)How my Blog Started

I originally made this blog quite a while ago because I wanted to start requesting Netgalley books. However, not long after that I fell into The Great Reading Slump and it kind of never amounted to anything. I stopped reading almost everything except comics for over a year. I always missed reading, but I just didn’t have the motivation or attention span to get back into it. At the very end of last year I heard about Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff. I can’t even remember how. I think I might have seen something on Tumblr? I downloaded the ebook and I started reading it and found it really interesting, but my attention span made me put it down and I didn’t pick it back up until the end of January, this year, when I was on six hour bus trip. This time around something just clicked and I fell in love with it. For the first time In a really long time I wanted to read again. This book means the world to me.

Two of my favourite people ever (and who are probably sick of me talking about them), Sheridan @ Sleepless and Battleworn & Vivian @ Inked in Pages, then helped inspire me to fully get back into reading. Vivian was posting these beautiful Bookstagram photos and reblogging book-ish stuff on Tumblr. Sheridan was texting me about these books she was reading and I was just like I MISS THIS SO MUCH. I was so out of the loop with what books were around I did a lot of Googling for recommendations. This led me to YouTube and I stumbled across Sasha @ abookutopia’s BookTube channel – except at the time I had no idea BookTube was a thing. I watched more of her videos and found other BookTubers. I was obsessed with watching The Unpopular Opinions tag 😂 All of this, along with Illuminae, just cemented that I wanted to get back into reading and books. I’d been reading ever since I knew how and before that my nana would read to me or tell me stories and I never realised how much I missed it.

This was the first BookTube video I watched.

I wanted a place to share my love for rediscovering books and I didn’t want to make YouTube videos so I decided to come back to this blog. I honestly had NO IDEA what I was doing. I still don’t, if we’re being honest. I didn’t even know if I was going to stick with it. I thought I’d be shouting into the void forever (I mean that would be okay, but I love interacting with all you beautiful people). I spent ages stalking Goodreads, Google and Blog Directories trying to find bloggers to follow and advice for new bloggers so I could make a decent attempt at doing this. Anyway, because this is already way too long winded and was supposed to be ‘a brief story‘ – starting this blog was the best decision I ever made and it’s helped with my anxiety and gaining confidence!

Some Advice

Firstly, considering that technically this blog is only a few months old I don’t know if I have any right to be giving advice 😂 I have noticed that reading advice from other new bloggers was a lot more relatable though because we’re in the same position. So I shall try!

Fake It ‘Til You Make It – Like I mentioned above I had NO IDEA what I was doing. I’m not new to social media by any means, but I’d never blogged about books before. This whole concept and community was new to me. I didn’t even really know book blogging was a thing. I see lots of new-ish bloggers say they don’t know what they’re doing and don’t worry! I guarantee most of us didn’t. Just act like you do, roll with it and eventually things will start coming naturally. It’s important to remember that everyone was new once. Even those bloggers out there now that are extremely well known – they didn’t start out like that (well most of them maybe?)! Don’t feel like you’re failing because you don’t have crazy high traffic and stats. You’re not! Follow bloggers and learn from them and add your own twist. You shouldn’t be fake about your personality though. I know how cliche this sounds, but being yourself is one of the best things you can do.

Interaction – This is a given, but interacting with your fellow bloggers is so important. I know it can be hard especially if you’re like me and feel extremely anxious about social situations. I don’t think I’ve ever initiated a conversation in my life. I saw all the blogging advice posts talk about how commenting is a must. So that’s what I did. I stalked a bunch of link up posts like Top Ten Tuesday and Stacking the Shelves and started following and commenting on a bunch of bloggers who I knew I had similar interests with. Of course you don’t need to like all the same books, but when I started I wanted to be in my comfort zone so. I was so nervous when I was commenting – I thought everyone would find me annoying. I was so wrong though because everyone was absolutely wonderful. I felt so welcomed. It was kind of overwhelming how lovely everyone was. I think something everyone should take into consideration though when blog hopping ect. is to try and have some actual substance and personality in your comment. Don’t just drop a link to promote yourself. Take the time to read the posts and be personal. As a side note, whilst I followed most blogs for their content, the first thing that caught my eye was their theme. Having a nice design is really important. You don’t need a paid account or anything fancy to do this. I know there’s not a lot of choice with free accounts, but just set aside some time to go through all the theme options and choose one that suits your blog. It’s also super important to have a blog that’s easy to navigate. It’ll give people easier access to fully explore your blog!

  1. I had no idea you were nominated by this many people. You were probably like not another one. Haha! Well, your blog is lovely and so are you, so I’m not at all surprised. 😊 Great advice! Personality is what draws me into reading a blog. I don’t follow boring people. 😝 And I agree with you 100%. The people who leave links but never interact with me are frustrating. I call them drop-by commenters. I love when people leave me a link to their post in case I missed it, but to not even comment seems strange to me. It feels fake. Nice post! I loved reading about how you started blogging. Who doesn’t love ARCs? It’s such an awesome perk.

    1. I honestly didn’t even realise either! I was going through my bookmarks to remember who to link and I was like “whoa, oops”. Haha, not at all! I appreciate it so much 😊 And aw, thank you!!

Right! If I wasn’t familiar with the books people had, I’d mention a cover I liked or check some Goodreads links. It just didn’t feel right being like “Cool Post now check out my blog!” haha.

ARCs are great 😀 I have to admit now that I’m blogging I’m a lot more chill about them, but if someone wants to give me a book that I’m interested in reading for free I’m not going to say no 😆

      1. I do the same thing. Leaving a link without any interaction makes me thing I’m talking to a computer. 😉 In the beginning, I was so excited about ARCs, but now I’m like it’s nice, but I have other books I paid for that I want to read. My TBR has been accumulating like crazy because of all the ARCs I was reading. Now I’m working on the books I paid for. Oh, and we’re reading The Raven Boys for our book of the month next month. I know how much you love the series. We can compare notes after I read it. 😊

        1. Right! And yes, same!! I remember going overboard on Netgalley at the very beginning 😂 I still have a few review books to get through, but I’m mostly focusing on books on my shelf atm because it’s about time I finally read them!!

Ooh yay!! I can’t wait to see what you think 😊

          1. I did the same thing on NetGalley, then realized it affects my rating. I still have a few I need to read. I DNF all but one of them. I’m now trying to read 3 books at a time. That’s a sign I’m not reading anything that piques my interest because I read an Indie last week that I finished within hours. I like my indie books. 😊

  2. Lauren, you are a minor celebrity in the book blogging community, it seems. That’s an insane amount of nominations for only one tag. hahaha. But they’re all so right. You are wonderful and everyone loves you because you’re not boring. 😀

  3. Fake it til you make it is the best advice EVER hahaha and that’s mostly what I did too, and still doing sometimes, I’m like yeah i’ll do this and that and be confident about it and hopefully everything will go well.
Thanks for the nomination Lauren ❤

  4. All those nominations are just testament to how amazing of a blogger you are 🙂 Fully deserved. That’s really great advice too! I had no idea what I was doing but I faked confidence and hoped I’d get somewhere haha. 🙂

  5. Dayuuum, 7 nominations is amazing, well done!! 😄I wish I’d read that advice when I first set up my blog haha. I agree about it being hard to to interact with everyone else at first, it’s good everyone is really nice on here 😀

Thank you for the nomination :D♥️

  6. Thank you for a wonderful post, I felt like I really interacted with it on a personal level because like you I have anxiety so I always feel nervous about commenting on peoples posts or interacting, I think everyone will find me annoying. I also question myself completely on my blog, I worry about every aspect of it but I’m finally incorporating my personality into it more, making headers and including little snippets of me into the posts such as my sarcastic jokey nature.
My anxiety is always in the back of my head though like ‘nobody is going to find this funny’ or ‘you sound stupid’, I’m just trying to ignore that little voice in my head as much as possible. I refuse to let it make me want to stop from blogging because I love reading and I want to be able to share that. 🙂

    1. Aw, thank you for the lovely words! It means so much to me that you were able to relate to this.

I 100% understand where you’re coming from. My anxiety still does the exact same things. Sometimes I’ll rewrite a comment a dozen times because I’m worried about how it sounds or sometimes I won’t know what to say at all so I’ll just ‘like’ someone’s reply. I definitely have that voice in my head too.

Everyone I’ve met has been so lovely though and it’s definitely helped me feel more relaxed. Even though it’s hard to completely keep that voice quiet, I can guarantee that no one will ever think you’re being annoying or stupid. Every time I see a notification of comments it makes my day. Definitely keep going with the blogging! Our anxiety doesn’t deserve to take away something we enjoy. You’re welcome to comment anytime about anything on my blog ♥

  7. Oh keeping up with tags and awards is so hard! I’m just so happy they don’t have deadlines and they’re so much fun to write so thank you for tagging me! 😀 And I agree on putting character inside the comments, it’s so important to make an actual comment and not just throw links around like confetti haha.
Sasha’s videos are SO much fun! I always go watch one of her videos if I don’t feel like picking up a book, she’s very motivating when you’re in a slump 😀

    1. Ahh, right! I have a folder in my bookmarks of all the tags and I didn’t realise how many I had in there 😂 No worries, I can’t wait to see your post! And right!!! It just feels so much more politer and makes the connection a lot more genuine.

Yes, definitely. BookTube always helps inspire me to want to read more!

  8. I AM SO HAPPY THAT YOU RETURNED TO READING AND CONTINUED THIS BLOG! And I am not shouting at you or anything I’m just thankful that you overcomed that “tragic” moment in your life when you stopped reading. And great advice, “fake it ’til you make it” is actually my mantra in most of the things I do especially in school. 😂😂😂

  9. I’ll be back to your page… I found you through Carrianne’s Cuppa n’ Critiques. Great move on nominating her. I love following her blog. I think I’ll love following yours too! 🙂 Looks like there are so many others I should follow…

P.S. Totally agree with your “Fake it till you make it point”. Book reviewing is not the main gist of my blog. I used to get myself all worked up with writing the best and fairest book review ever that I would never get around to reviewing books! Even though I read a ton, I sometimes don’t get around to writing reviews because I put so much pressure on writing the review. Just one step at a time, one blog post at a time. It’s really all your readers expect from you.

Anyway, looking forward to following your blog. 🙂

    1. Aw, thank you so much for the kind reviews! Carrianne’s blog is wonderful ♥

Ahh yes, I totally understand where you’re coming from. Reviews are what actually cause me the most stress because I see so many people write such great ones that are either really creative or are almost academic and I am not a writer. I’m definitely trying not to let it worry me though and it’s definitely getting a lot easier the more I post.
