BOOK TAG: Harry Potter

Flagrate | Writing Charm

A book you found the theme interesting, but you’d like to rewrite it

Being a huge fan of thrillers I thought I was absolutely going to love this book, but I didn’t. The concept was so interesting and I loved the idea of Amy and what she did, but it just didn’t translate well for me through this book. I hated all the characters and I know we were supposed to, but it wasn’t even the ‘good’ hate, if that makes sense? It was just annoying. I found it incredibly predictable and guessed the ‘twist’ like a 1/4 of a way in. I kept waiting for something to happen to absolutely shock me, but it never did? I don’t like saying ‘rewrite’ because I’m not a writer and I don’t know what I’d do differently (except change the ending)… I just wish I had loved this book as much as everyone else did! I did really enjoy the movie though.

Alohomora | Unlocking Charm

The first book in a series that got you hooked

I know a lot of people have mixed feelings about this series and especially how it ended. I didn’t hate it as much as a lot of people, but that said I didn’t love it either. I cried. A lot. I was absolutely crushed and I spent ages feeling awful. However, Divergent hooked me in so much that I read this and Insurgent in 4 days. Take me back to 2013. That was like 800 pages? In 4 days. HOW. I need to travel back in time and ask 2013 what my secret was. I loved the characters and I loved the world and I was so incredibly caught up in everything. This was my first real dystopian novel and that probably had a lot to do with why I loved it so much, but just oh man. These books will always have a special place in my heart.

Accio | Summoning Charm

A book that you wish you could have right now  

First of all do you know how much I wish I could Accio in real life? Because the answer is A LOT. Anyway.

I would do almost ANYTHING to get my hands on this book. I have never wanted anything so badly in my life. I just can’t even explain in words how much I loved Illuminae. I mean it did get me out of a year long reading slump and is a huge part of the reason as to why I started using this blog. I can not wait to see what new document styles are going to be included in this and I’m really excited to meet new characters and learn more about everything. I NEED IT NOW I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL OCTOBER.

Avada Kedavra | The Killing Curse

A killer book. Both senses. Take it as you like. 

I’m taking it in the literal sense. Welcome to the Dark House is one of my favourite horrors. It’s like every teen slasher ever in book form. The setting is an abandoned amusement park. It’s centered around a fictional horror movie franchise/director. There’s an amazing female lead and a ton of awesome and unique supporting characters. It’s fast paced and has multi-POVs. I don’t want to spoil anything, but like you know … just don’t get attached … to anyone.

Confundo | Confusing Charm

A book that you found really confusing

Pretty sure I’ve been under this charm my entire life.

So I was just starting to feel comfortable with the Marvel universe. I knew enough to finally stop feeling intimidated by comics.Then Marvel decided to mess everything up and tear apart the universe and created the Secret Wars event. I HATED this event. It was confusing. Unnecessary. It made ZERO sense and it felt so god damn pointless. I’ve read like 5 of the 9 issues and instead of answering questions it just kept creating new ones. The only tie-ins I enjoyed were A-Force and Runaways. I didn’t really care about any of the characters that survived and were the main feature in Secret Wars. As far as I’m concerned it never happened and I’m not bothering with the last four issues because I honestly don’t care lmao.

Expecto Patronum | Patronus Charm

Your spirit animal book

Serious question: What is your patronus? Mine would 100% be a sloth.

Anyway, the entire Percy Jackson series is definitely my spirit animal. I was too lazy to edit pictures together so you just get the cover of The Lightening Thief because I fell in love with this book and devoured the rest of this series and The Lost Hero and every other single thing that’s in the world of Camp Half-Blood. I feel like I relate to so many of these characters and I absolutely love Greek mythology. It’s just my Happy Place and reading it makes me feel content. I love everything about it.

Sectumsempra | Dark Charm

A dark, twisted book

I’ve talked a lot about this book recently so I’ll try not to harp on too much. Reading this book was the best decision of my life. I will NEVER forget it. I never get scared by books, but this one terrified me. It’s a classic short story about a women who doesn’t receive proper treatment for her mental illness and as a result descends into madness. This book hit so close to home for me and it was extremely hard to read at times. It was dark and twisted in the sense that this book is all too real. It may have been set in the 1800s but so many of the points are still relevant today. Even though it scared the hell out of me it also gave me a new found sense of inspiration to keep fighting. This book is SO important, it’s only 64 pages, it’s free (and legal) with a quick Google search. Please, please read it if you’re not easily triggered.

Aparecium | Revealing Charm

A book that surprised you in a great way, reveals to be more than it is. 

I loved this book and I read it in like a day which is extremely rare for me these days. It’s about a cursed girl, Isabel, who needs poisonous plants to survive and this boy, Lucas, who’s life becomes entwined with hers. It’s set in Puerto Rico and richly entangled with Spanish mythology and legends. It would have been so easy to make Isabel into some kind of monster or fantastical creature but she is so incredibly human. It shouldn’t seem real – the concept is crazy – but you believe every single word like it’s normality. It’s so magical and alive. It has an open ending which might bother some people, but I loved it because it makes me feel like Isabel and Lucas’ story is going to become a legend all of its own. This book was just so, so much more than I ever imagined. Definitely one I won’t be forgetting!
