BOOK TAG: Harry Potter

bthp

I was tagged by the super rad Ravenclaw Book Club and Being a Book Nerd.  I love Harry Potter so much and I’m really excited to do this one. Thanks so much! Make sure to check their posts out here and here. Give their blogs a follow to if you’re not already!

This is a variation of some  Harry Potter Spell tags which were created by TurtleSympathy and kimberlyfayereads. If you’d like to use some pretty graphics for this tag then go check out Lashaan & Trang @ Bookidote‘s post. The only rule is that (unfortunately!!!) you can’t use any of the Harry Potter books as your answers.

Gone Girl by Gillian FlynnFlagrate | Writing Charm

A book you found the theme interesting, but you’d like to rewrite it

Being a huge fan of thrillers I thought I was absolutely going to love this book, but I didn’t. The concept was so interesting and I loved the idea of Amy and what she did, but it just didn’t translate well for me through this book. I hated all the characters and I know we were supposed to, but it wasn’t even the ‘good’ hate, if that makes sense? It was just annoying. I found it incredibly predictable and guessed the ‘twist’ like a 1/4 of a way in. I kept waiting for something to happen to absolutely shock me, but it never did? I don’t like saying ‘rewrite’ because I’m not a writer and I don’t know what I’d do differently (except change the ending)… I just wish I had loved this book as much as everyone else did! I did really enjoy the movie though.

Divergent by Veronica RothAlohomora | Unlocking Charm

The first book in a series that got you hooked

I know a lot of people have mixed feelings about this series and especially how it ended. I didn’t hate it as much as a lot of people, but that said I didn’t love it either. I cried. A lot. I was absolutely crushed and I spent ages feeling awful. However, Divergent hooked me in so much that I read this and Insurgent in 4 days. Take me back to 2013. That was like 800 pages? In 4 days. HOW. I need to travel back in time and ask 2013 what my secret was. I loved the characters and I loved the world and I was so incredibly caught up in everything. This was my first real dystopian novel and that probably had a lot to do with why I loved it so much, but just oh man. These books will always have a special place in my heart.

Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay KristoffAccio | Summoning Charm

A book that you wish you could have right now

First of all do you know how much I wish I could Accio in real life? Because the answer is A LOT. Anyway.

I would do almost ANYTHING to get my hands on this book. I have never wanted anything so badly in my life. I just can’t even explain in words how much I loved Illuminae. I mean it did get me out of a year long reading slump and is a huge part of the reason as to why I started using this blog. I can not wait to see what new document styles are going to be included in this and I’m really excited to meet new characters and learn more about everything. I NEED IT NOW I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL OCTOBER.

Welcome to the Dark House by Laurie Faria StolarzAvada Kedavra | The Killing Curse

A killer book. Both senses. Take it as you like.

I’m taking it in the literal sense. Welcome to the Dark House is one of my favourite horrors. It’s like every teen slasher ever in book form. The setting is an abandoned amusement park. It’s centered around a fictional horror movie franchise/director. There’s an amazing female lead and a ton of awesome and unique supporting characters. It’s fast paced and has multi-POVs. I don’t want to spoil anything, but like you know … just don’t get attached … to anyone.

Secret Wars by Jonathan HickmanConfundo | Confusing Charm

A book that you found really confusing

Pretty sure I’ve been under this charm my entire life.

So I was just starting to feel comfortable with the Marvel universe. I knew enough to finally stop feeling intimidated by comics. Then Marvel decided to mess everything up and tear apart the universe and created the Secret Wars event. I HATED this event. It was confusing. Unnecessary. It made ZERO sense and it felt so god damn pointless. I’ve read like 5 of the 9 issues and instead of answering questions it just kept creating new ones. The only tie-ins I enjoyed were A-Force and Runaways. I didn’t really care about any of the characters that survived and were the main feature in Secret Wars. As far as I’m concerned it never happened and I’m not bothering with the last four issues because I honestly don’t care lmao.

Percy Jackson by Rick RiordanExpecto Patronum | Patronus Charm

Your spirit animal book

Serious question: What is your patronus? Mine would 100% be a sloth.

Anyway, the entire Percy Jackson series is definitely my spirit animal. I was too lazy to edit pictures together so you just get the cover of The Lightening Thief because I fell in love with this book and devoured the rest of this series and The Lost Hero and every other single thing that’s in the world of Camp Half-Blood. I feel like I relate to so many of these characters and I absolutely love Greek mythology. It’s just my Happy Place and reading it makes me feel content. I love everything about it.

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins GilmanSectumsempra | Dark Charm

A dark, twisted book

I’ve talked a lot about this book recently so I’ll try not to harp on too much. Reading this book was the best decision of my life. I will NEVER forget it. I never get scared by books, but this one terrified me. It’s a classic short story about a women who doesn’t receive proper treatment for her mental illness and as a result descends into madness. This book hit so close to home for me and it was extremely hard to read at times. It was dark and twisted in the sense that this book is all too real. It may have been set in the 1800s but so many of the points are still relevant today. Even though it scared the hell out of me it also gave me a new found sense of inspiration to keep fighting. This book is SO important, it’s only 64 pages, it’s free (and legal) with a quick Google search. Please, please read it if you’re not easily triggered.

A Fierce and Subtle Poison by Samantha MabryAparecium | Revealing Charm

A book that surprised you in a great way, reveals to be more than it is.

I loved this book and I read it in like a day which is extremely rare for me these days. It’s about a cursed girl, Isabel, who needs poisonous plants to survive and this boy, Lucas, who’s life becomes entwined with hers. It’s set in Puerto Rico and richly entangled with Spanish mythology and legends. It would have been so easy to make Isabel into some kind of monster or fantastical creature but she is so incredibly human. It shouldn’t seem real – the concept is crazy – but you believe every single word like it’s normality. It’s so magical and alive. It has an open ending which might bother some people, but I loved it because it makes me feel like Isabel and Lucas’ story is going to become a legend all of its own. This book was just so, so much more than I ever imagined. Definitely one I won’t be forgetting!

I tag:

Whoever loves Harry Potter and needs something to post!

I have a ton of tags I need to do so I’m trying to space out who I tag!

Also, I know I tend to get long winding in a lot in my tag posts and I’m sorry! I know I could make them quick and short, I just find it so hard not to talk forever about the things I love (or don’t love in some cases, haha). Hopefully it’s not too annoying! 🙈

I would love to hear your thoughts about these books if you’ve read or are planing to read them!

Hope you’re all having a lovely day xx

  1. Hooray for Percy Jackson! We have the same spirit animal book. I am absolutely obsessed with Greek mythology. 😁

      1. Greek mythology has always been my obsession but I think i’m getting fond of Norse mythology aswell. 😁

          1. I haven’t read that book yet! 😫 What got me interested in Norse mythology in the first place was the movie Thor.. 😂

  2. I love this tag and all graphics accompanied with it. I am also happy that a lot of blogs are doing the tag and thanking the bloggers at Bookidote for the graphics. However, I also feel the need to express that Bookidote aren’t the creators of “The Harry Potter Spells Tag”, and it has been done before by a few other bloggers who always give credit to the person who did it before them. It’s important in this community to give props, and not to take full credit for something that has, clearly, been done a thousand. I am sure that a few Google searches would have shown the two bloggers this. I love all your picks, BTW!

    1. Ahh, sorry! I was not aware of that. Not trying to make excuses for myself but I’ve only been blogging for a month so I’m pretty new and don’t really know all the ins and outs. Everyone I follow who has done this has linked to Bookidote so I, ignorantly, just presumed they were the creators. I’m all about giving the proper credit so I’ll edit my post accordingly. Thanks for complimenting my choices and for letting me know about the tag!!

      1. No no sweetie, it’s not you. I was just saying that I think the bloggers who started this tag again should acknowledge the ones who actually did it first. To take credit and say that they thought of it first is really bad in this blogging community.

        1. Aw yes, I got you 💜 I understand you weren’t directing it at me I just wanted to make sure that I voiced how important it is that I think people revieve proper credit! I’m actually so glad you let me know otherwise I would have had no idea 😊 I think I managed to find the original creators. I completely agree! As someone who used to be right into making “edits” on Tumblr and Livejournal (back in the day) seeing your work taken by others was not fun!

          1. Yes, I just really think it shows respect. I have only been blogging for 2 years, but I’ve been around this community for close to 6 years. Everyone wants to have unique topics to discuss or whatever, but my favorite bloggers always mention the blogger (if any) who inspired that tag, meme, discussion, etc….

  3. I’m doing this because it’s incredible omg. I want to read Gone Girl but I’ve heard so many people disliking it that it’s pretty low on my tbr. I loved Percy Jackson and I loved divergent. Insurgent was good but I really was disappointed in Allegiant:/ will definitely have to check out the others!!!

    1. Yay! I can’t wait to see your post 😀 Ooh, really? I’ve mostly only heard positive things about it so I felt like I was the only one who hated it, haha. I think I may have enjoyed it more if I read it not aware of the hype or wasn’t really into thrillers because I may have been more caught off guard and appreciative of the “twists”.

Percy is the best! I definitely understand why people were disappointed in Allegiant, it definitely wasn’t how I wanted the series to end.

  4. This is such a great tag, and these are such great answers as well! There are so many books I would use a summoning charm on so I could get them right away, but Gemina is definitely one of them. I loved Illuminae so much and can’t wait to read the sequel, I have a feeling it’s gonna be even better!
Also my patronus would totally be an owl, just because they’re my favourite animal 😀

    1. It was a lot of fun! And thank you 😀 I’m dying for Gemina. I feel like it’s going to be even better too! I’m so excited to know what the new document format is going to be because Jay Kristoff said it’s going to “blow our minds”. I hate that October is so far away. Can they release it now instead hahaha.

      Aw, nice! I love owls!

      1. Ohh I haven’t seen anything so far about a new document format for Gemina. I’m even more excited for the book now and I didn’t think that was even possible! God I would give anything to have the book in my hands right now! Why must October be so far away?

  5. I personally really liked Gone Girl, but I can definitely see why some people don’t.
I’ve heard nothing but good things about A Fierce and Subtle Poison, so I really wanna pick it up! x

    1. I think I would have liked it more if I didn’t go in with such high expectations or if I wasn’t such an avid thriller fan because then I may have found it more shocking or whatever? I do want to read Gillian’s other books though!

I loved AFASP sooooo much. It was a really quick read too and the setting felt so alive. I really felt like I was in Puerto Rico. It’s one of those books that aren’t for everyone, but one that you should definitely experience for yourself to see! I hope you enjoy it when you get to it!

  6. I read The Yellow Wallpaper in high school as part of one of an advanced English curriculum and LET ME JUST TELL YOU, this book is hella-terrifying! It has stuck with me, though I think I need to go back and reread it now, as an adulty-type person; I’m sure I missed a lot of things in that first read-through that I might catch now.

Also, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, by Ambrose Bierce — this short story is SO, SO poignant and powerful. Not that you asked. But, I felt the need to share.

    1. It had such an impact on me! I was not expecting to feel the things I did when I read it. I’m so glad I decided to challenge myself and read way outside my comfort zone because now I can’t imagine my life without having read it.

Oooh, I’m interested already just by the title. I’m always more than happy to receive recommendations. Thank you for sharing!!

  7. I agree with you on Gone Girl! It pretty much had the most unlikeable, unlikeable characters ever. Hopefully that made sense, haha. I didn’t even really care what happened to them by the end and it’s a good thing too because I didn’t like the ending either. I don’t know, just wasn’t my cup of tea I guess. For some reason I liked the movie too! I have no idea but I just feel like it was one of those incredibly rare instances where a story actually translated better on screen than in print.

Also can’t wait for Gemina!!! October seems so far. AH!

    1. So glad someone else feels the same about Gone Girl, haha! All I see is how much people love it and I feel like I missed something. I definitely agree about it not translating well. It had such a good concept, but it just didn’t work for me.

I know!!! I need it now!!

  8. Great answers Lauren! Such a bummer you didn’t love Gone Girl more, although I do have to agree with you that the movie is excellent! I also really enjoyed Welcome to the Dark House (per your recommendation of course) and it definitely is a slasher movie in book form. 🙂
